Brief History: In 1864 Damon met a woman named Katherine Pierce. He was on leave from war. He was fighting in the Battle for Southern Independence. He deserted shortly after meeting her because he fell in love with her. But there was a problem. She was also with his brother, Stefan. And Katherine was a vampire. His father hated vampires and Stefan told his father that he believed that not all vampires were bad. This made his father suspicious that he knew a vampire. He spiked his drink with vervain, a herb that would weaken a vampire if they were to ingest it. Katherine bit Stefan, and shortly after she was taken away.
Damon tried to get her back but there was nothing he could do. And Stefan pleaded with him to do nothing. They had rounded up all the vampires and planned to burn them in the church. He tried to save Katherine before she was sent to the church but before he could, him and Stefan were both shot but their father.
He had been taking Katherine’s blood because she was going to turn him, and after he was shot, he started to transition. To his shock, so did his brother. He did not want to turn. His reason’s for turning had been to stay with Katherine forever, and now she was dead. But Stefan convinced him because he didn’t want to be alone. He completed the transition by feeding on human blood. He then vowed that he was make Stefan’s life miserable and left Mystic Falls.
145 years later, he returned to Mystic Falls, discovering that his brother had found a girl named Elena Gilbert. A girl that was the image of Katherine Pierce, but entirely different to her in personality. Damon did everything he could to keep his vow to his brother for making his life miserable. He did whatever he wanted, with no regard for how it affected anyone else. He uses Caroline and Vicky as a toy for his amusement. He turns Vicky because he’s bored and Stefan ends up having to stake her before she hurts Elena.
He eventually shared his plans for returning to Mystic Falls with Stefan. Emily Bennett, a witch Katherine had known, had saved all the vampires in the church, including Katherine. And he planned to get her back. After much planning he finally got the tomb open only to find that Katherine wasn’t in the tomb. He learned that she had known where he was all this time, and she didn’t care. He was devastated.
Personality:When you first meet Damon he comes off as sadistic, unmerciful, remorseless, careless, cruel, arrogant and impulsive. He also came off as sinister, dangerous, generally unkind, uncaring, cold hearted, ruthless and unsympathetic. He didn't have any problem killing innocent people and he generally did whatever he wanted and whatever was necessary to get what he wanted.
But as the show progresses you see Damon start to open up more and show that he genuinely does care about other people. He may still be reckless and impulsive but he does what he does out of love. He wants to protect the people he cares about and goes to great lengths to do so. He tries to seem like he doesn’t care at times when he really is hurting because it’s easier for him to pretend. He tends to struggle through his pain on his own. He can also be quite witty and has a good sense of humor.
Strengths: Damon has the power to create and control fog, has the ability to jump great heights, with some suggestions of the power of flight. He can control a crow, using it as his messenger or signal. He has the ability to 'compel' people, a trait that can lead him to controlling minds, and change memories (creating, erasing or altering). He has superior speed and endurance, moving faster than the human eye can follow, along with the ability to heal mortal wounds
Weaknesses: Physically his biggest weakness would be a stake to the heart, and vervain. Otherwise, his weaknesses are impulsiveness, recklessness and love. He often lets his heart cloud his better judgement.
