Sometimes I forget my father's dead. It's easy to do here. Just visiting, home still a snapshot from the last time we were all there at once. His smile and my mother's laugh, wet with wine and glowing in warm orange candlelight. And a wicked glint in my brother's eye and my sister's baby blonde curls just peeking over the table as he chased her.

And then I remember that no matter how much I practise, I will never open a door to them.

But I have learned to open doors to friends, so that's a small victory to be proud of. And it's all right to grieve and be happy at the same time.

That's exactly what it is. You get used to not seeing them and you forget why it is you don't.

I'm sorry, were you very close? Do you miss him very much?

Not for them so much as to them. I could open one to you, I think. Though I know that's rude.

At times we've been close, at other times it's been complicated. My entire family history is a bit complicated, and as I watch my show I think it may be more complicated than I even realize.

But yes, I do miss him.

Why rude?

I've watched a little bit of your show. I hope that's all right. I am a little jealous that there's so much for some of you when my book ends so abruptly. Do you get some comfort out of watching him a little? Or is it unpleasant?

Well, I don't want to walk in on you if you're indisposed. It's not the sort of door I can knock on.

It's perfectly fine. Everyone has, well not everyone, but enough people that I've gotten over being bothered by it quite some time ago. I think sometimes it is comforting, and sometimes it's confusing, and sometimes it is unpleasant - it depends upon the particular case or circumstance.

And ah - that makes perfect sense. Well, you are always welcome to use the old fashioned variety with knockers.

That all sounds perfectly normal for a very abnormal situation. I think so many of us are like the wounded in a great battle, herded here for respite. It's a big of a romantic idea but sometimes it makes me feel better, safer, less guilty.

Are you still in the tower? I just may do. Today has been very difficult.

That's a good way of putting it I think. It is a different sort of thing than I think most of us would ever do at home.

I am still in the tower. I don't really care to fund myself an apartment in New York City, and I've friends here still. Come by if you'd like, my door will be open - in a metaphorical sense of course, not a literal one.
