Sometimes I forget my father's dead. It's easy to do here. Just visiting, home still a snapshot from the last time we were all there at once. His smile and my mother's laugh, wet with wine and glowing in warm orange candlelight. And a wicked glint in my brother's eye and my sister's baby blonde curls just peeking over the table as he chased her.

And then I remember that no matter how much I practise, I will never open a door to them.

But I have learned to open doors to friends, so that's a small victory to be proud of. And it's all right to grieve and be happy at the same time.

I wondered that myself. He seemed the same, aside from a cut throat, but you can't really tell until it's too late.

I think the guys from Supernatural would agree that it's better not to chance it.

I'm not entirely sure I understand. Are you speaking in code?

Almost always.

But why?

To obfuscate meaning.

But that is the precise opposite purpose of language.

What's that saying? Language was invented to conceal one's thoughts?

That doesn't make any sense at all. Thoughts are already concealed.

We speak to communicate, and to make things happen. Not necessarily to communicate what we're thinking or to say what we mean. Language serves many functions that have nothing to do with honesty and openness.

No, but it does serve to communicate, and obfuscation is not communication.

It can be part of it. Do you always say exactly what you mean?

I do, otherwise people wouldn't know what I mean. And if I don't want them to know I don't speak.

Sometimes when you're a public figure, you have to speak even when you don't want to say anything, you have to talk about things you don't want to talk about, and you have to tell people things you don't want people to know.

I have a hard time believing anyone can make you speak about anything you don't want to, Tony Stark.

Then you haven't met my friend, Steve Rogers.

Still. Making people believe you're saying something while actually saying nothing at all is the most useful skill you can learn.

I have. He's very nice.

I think saying something meaningful is a more useful skill.

What's "something meaningful," then?

Depends on the situation. Something honest.
