Sometimes I forget my father's dead. It's easy to do here. Just visiting, home still a snapshot from the last time we were all there at once. His smile and my mother's laugh, wet with wine and glowing in warm orange candlelight. And a wicked glint in my brother's eye and my sister's baby blonde curls just peeking over the table as he chased her.

And then I remember that no matter how much I practise, I will never open a door to them.

But I have learned to open doors to friends, so that's a small victory to be proud of. And it's all right to grieve and be happy at the same time.

Yes and also no. I can open a door to a place that I have been, though I have to practise, I'm still learning. But I've taught myself to open a door to a person also, wherever he is. And before I've opened places by mistake or in desperation that I've never been to.

So you can go to a place if you need to, more or less?

More or less. Sometimes much less if the need is not great. But I'm practising so that I'll become better. It's hard because (knock on wood) I haven't had my life threatened here yet.

I know a thing or two about the extremes people are capable of when their lives are threatened.

I'm a much better shot when it counts.

I read a story once. I don't remember what it was, but the moral was that you will always run faster for your life than for your supper.

That makes a great deal of sense to me. Can I ask why you and your family were threatened at all?

It's a little complicated, but there was this angel who needed a door opened and my father went to him to discuss some political things - he wanted to unite the underside, where I'm from - and the angel wanted him to open the door. And my father wouldn't. So he had him and my mother and brother killed. And he was going to kill me too but I wasn't home at the time. And keep my baby sister to open the door.
