Sometimes I forget my father's dead. It's easy to do here. Just visiting, home still a snapshot from the last time we were all there at once. His smile and my mother's laugh, wet with wine and glowing in warm orange candlelight. And a wicked glint in my brother's eye and my sister's baby blonde curls just peeking over the table as he chased her.

And then I remember that no matter how much I practise, I will never open a door to them.

But I have learned to open doors to friends, so that's a small victory to be proud of. And it's all right to grieve and be happy at the same time.

That makes more sense. That's what happens to me, momentarily forgetting that he's gone, I mean. I thought maybe you had some kind of secret method to really forget.

I think here it becomes easier to forget so many things. It's all so sterile and clean and removed here, so distant from everything I've ever known. But I wouldn't wish forgetting on anyone, not real forgetting. I just want to remember as best as I'm able.

No, they deserve more than to be forgotten.

Have you been here long?

We all do, I think. And I think there is always someone who remembers each of us.

I'm not very good with time but a month or two? Three? I think. At least two.

I suppose unless everyone you know is gone.

I guess if I'm still here in two months, I'll see if things seem more distant. It's a nice thought, though.

Have you just arrived? I'm sorry, this is a very melancholy greeting, isn't it? I hope you don't feel too distant... unless. Well, unless you didn't like where you came from.

No need to apologize. I'm glad to be out of that hell place, just wish I had time to finish what I had to do. It seems a lot of people come and go from here often though, so who knows how long this will last.

Some people have been here a very long time, and some people come and go over and over. It's very confusing. But I understand about unfinished business. I have something very unfinished that I wish I could attend to. I try not to think about that either.

Wait, are you saying it's possible to leave and come back?

I am, though not voluntarily, as far as I can recall. I think those who leave forget their time here when they return, so I don't know if that happens always or only sometimes or if it means something deeper that I haven't thought of yet.
