It's nice to get signal even out here. I'd like to thank Tony and Pepper again for giving me such a nice view of the city while dangling off the balcony ledge to get some air.

For those of us who grew up on Earth, or rather, a version of Earth - a little under 1% of the static that you see on your television set is a remnant of the Big Bang. If you were able to see microwave light instead of just visible light, the night sky would glow a bright, unforgiving white from the glowing heat of the ancient explosion. The atoms that make up your body are ancient as well, and recycled - so you are as much a part of Joan of Arc as you are Joseph Stalin. Humbling, somehow.

It's good getting perspective.

It might sound metaphorical from a certain angle, as well, I am assuming. But I have never been good with metaphors, just facts.

You are not the Dr. Bruce Banner from my world, are you?

I don't know about that. There was definitely more of Joseph Stalin than there was of Joan of Arc. Like, size-wise.

[info]purpleshorts
2012-12-14 02:50 am UTC (link)
I don't know if it works by literal size... though also keep in mind that Stalin himself was made of former people as well.

Although if we think of it that way, I suppose we could all agree that our most widely-represented president would be Taft. Pun intended.

[info]barton
2012-12-14 03:21 am UTC (link)
Well, then we're definitely more him, because some part of us being joan of arc is actually a part of us being Stalin. And the same can't be said for Joan.

Clearly there's a little bit of Taft in all of us.

The human eye is quite limited to the energy of light it can observe and record. Space has amazing radiation.

Though, is fifty years enough time for Joseph Stalin's remains to be recycled as part of the environment? As I understand [reference: web results] the body was entombed then moved near a wall, kept whole. I would not expect the molecules and atoms from his body at the time of his death to have made great progress transiting the planet. However, the gas he exhaled, the contents that went through his intestinal system, and any bodily fluids lost I can easily imagine having had their molecules and atoms spread widely.

Do you know what went into this body? It is not mine. I do not wish to occupy it at the expense of someone it belongs to, if it was previously occupied.

[info]purpleshorts
2012-12-14 02:59 am UTC (link)
Those particles you mentioned - air, liquids, energy, etc - are all those things that are recycled. What we think of his "body" is a very small portion of what he effected simply by being in or near. So yes, he's definitely been, ah... making the rounds, so to speak.

Ah, but what makes you physically you - that's something different. While an atom is a building unit, D.N.A. is what gives you physical characteristics. You haven't stolen anything, Moya. You've inherited a vast legacy from those that were here before.

Short people should become astronauts. Did you know that you can grow up to 2 inches in height due to being in zero gravity?

That was on my fun fact science calendar for the day.

I did know that, actually. Most rockets have a very strict height/weight restriction.

I didn't know you had a science calendar.

If that doesn't get them going, there's always the theory that if you were to pick yourself apart with tweezers, one atom at a time, you would produce a mound of fine atomic dust.

It's nice to meet you, Dr. Banner.

Actually, maybe she was. I sort of took naps during History of Magic.
