Meanwhile, Rey was trying to cast out the sounds around her. It felt to Rey as though this was all designed in a way to bring forth failure and that was not an option. She would not let the commotion of the ball distract her so she was pushing the sound of the band and the guests away. She was standing, away from the crowd, with her eyes closed and trying to focus. Had she done anything that warranted an apology in the recent months? Was there something these faeries might have seen and felt was a wrong doing by her?

She brought in a breath when she heard Luke's question and found she was grateful that he was still with her, trying to aide in some manner. But the questions gave her pause and she opened her eyes, looking just over her shoulder, in his direction.

As far as she saw it, no one had cared enough about her for most of her life for her to have any potential to hurt them. And those who cared for her now? She did everything in her power to abstain from causing any pain. She was too afraid of losing them. She didn't answer Luke's questions but there was flickers of emotion displayed across her mostly visible face, like she was processing through her past with his question.

And, in regard to disappointment, well...

She frowned.

Luke prodded her gently, giving her a hint, "It's not me."

"I know." She wasn't certain if she could have said the same for the Luke she'd met years prior, the one who was full of hope and youth and had tried to teach her what he could before disappearing through a different portal. Would he have been disappointed in her? Or what of Han, the one whom she'd lived side by side with, and who likely would have had a few choices words about how she chose to handle being stranded in Chicago alone?

She'd disappointed Ben. She knew that and there'd been a time where she vehemently did not care. And no faerie would force an apology from her in regard to that. The best she could say on that now was that she wished for a different outcome, but Ben knew that.

"I didn't have people to disappoint, Luke, not before Finn."

"You're forgetting someone," he said.

"No, I'm not." Unkar didn't think of her as a person. She was property. What was she supposed to apologize to him for? Not handing over BB-8? Running off on the Falcon with Finn and depriving him of a worker?

And she didn't think she was abandoned because of a wrong doing on her part. She didn't know why they had truly given her away. It may have been for drinking money like Ben had said, it may have been for something different entirely, but they had given her away.

What could she make amends for in relation to them? Who else was there? Luke couldn't be thinking of Leia, could he?

No.

She knew she didn't disappoint Leia.

Luke looked at her and sighed. He motioned with his chin for her to follow him and led her slowly around the perimeter of the ball, walking slowly and avoiding the rest of the crowd the best that they could.

At one point he stopped, speaking lowly, "Close your eyes."

Rey's body stilled at the sound of the sigh and her shoulders deflated. If Luke had someone in mind, it had to be someone he'd known that she also knew? But she was certain it couldn't be Leia and Luke wouldn't blame her for Ben's refusal to alert his course. Did he feel he deserved an apology? He might not have felt she disappointed him or hurt him, as he had assured her of this even if she knew he hadn't felt as such, but maybe he still needed an apology.

She had taken the ancient texts without his knowledge. She'd still not even told him they were in this universe.

Sighing, she followed by his side, wishing not for the first time this night that she could have just apprehended those taken by force.

Luke turned Rey to face in a specific direction before releasing her and quietly backing away. "Open your eyes."

Rey had done as Luke instructed when they'd stopped, shutting her eyes, even though her mind was still tumbling over any indiscretions that Luke might have been aware of. It was this that she was focusing on when she felt him turn her body. She drew in a breath at the sound of his voice and her eyes opened. She expected them to be looking at someone that they both knew and in a way, she was, for her gaze was now planted ahead at a mirror.

She stared at her reflection and she understood at once what Luke was suggesting.

Her lips pursed together and she brought in a shaky breath. "No." It wasn't clear whether she was rejecting the suggestion or the act. But there was a shake of her head and she looked away from the mirror now, even though she felt a pull to look back towards it. Her fingers dug into her palm.

This was a game. They wanted an apology. Who was to say it had to be for something specific? "I took the texts when I left Ahch-To." She didn't know if he knew this. Perhaps he did. She made certain to word her next statement carefully. "I'm sorry that I didn't ask permission." It wasn't exactly true but it was more true than saying she was sorry she'd done it all, which was certainly not the case.

The card, which she had tucked under her sleeve, suddenly felt hot against her skin and she looked in the direction of her arm, alarmed. "Ah," she vocalized, fingers moving to pull it out from under the garment.

"Rey," Luke said sternly. He might have been surprised that she took them, but there was a far more important matter at hand. He could ask her about the texts later, not that he was especially upset about it.

"No," she said again, eyes flashing away from the card and up to Luke. "That is absurd. Who demands someone apologize to themself?" She countered, more bite in her tone than she typically tossed his way, but it didn't feel as if it was because of him. It was because she didn't want to admit that it felt right and there was still the pull to look towards the mirror.

There was a stubbornness in Rey's eyes as the next desperate attempts were thrown out. An apology to Han Solo, for gutting out a portion of the Falcon when she was alone and had taken ownership of his ship as it sat grounded in Chicago. For acting as if she had any right to do so. Another apology to Han, as well as Leia, for revealing too much of their future by accident and weighing down their hearts. An apology to Steve Rogers, for not having it in her to try to regain his friendship. Each one of these brought another flash of heat to the card and Rey'd even dropped it at one point, only for it to find itself back in her hand, with her pressing her finger tips to her lips. Frustration was mounting in her and the pressure was growing because she was more than aware of how the clock was ticking down. And all the while, she ignored the pull to look back to the mirror.

And then she heard the name of the woman on her card. While Rey had been completely drowning out most of the guest, all of this that was happening was for Gabrielle Delacour. It was like a beacon call and Rey's eyes caught sight of the man. She watched him for a moment, her hand crumpling the card in her hand, and when she turned her eyes away, she knew Luke was right. She looked to Luke for a moment, long and hard, before turning her gaze back to the mirror that had been trying so strongly to get her attention. It felt like being thrown back this time because there was no resistance.

Suddenly, all she could see was the line of duplicates. She'd done this before. She'd been here before. Duplicates of herself as far as the eye could see. When she'd last been in this position, she'd reached out and pressed her hand to the mirror, begging to see her parents. Back when she'd still held onto the belief that protected her from the truth. She'd rather believe that they were going to come back than accept that she'd been thrown away as if she was nothing.

She'd believed that for so long. Even during her years in Chicago and a portion of her time here. It was only with her memories, and some time, that she was able to begin to push that feeling away. She wasn't nothing. She wasn't nobody. And she had told herself she needed to stop allowing that feeling. She'd made that promise in Leia's company, though it wasn't spoken to the General. It was a promise to herself.

And now she needed to make peace with herself, too.

She moved through the line of duplicates, nothing to distract her, just a black abyss and another and another and another of herself as far as she could see. But eventually, just as it had on Ahch-To, it came to an end. And she finally stepped to final spot in line, a row of herself back that mimicked her motions, all followed her lead as she stared ahead at the one anomaly. There was no mirror now. In front of her was herself, yes, but not a duplicate. The young girl who had turned pained eyes to the sky and begged for a sip to turn around. This version of herself was looking ahead at the Rey of the present, watching and waiting.

Rey dropped down to a knee in front of her younger, expectant self, and drew in a breath. "You were never nobody," she whispered, voice strained as she did so. "I'm sorry I made you hold onto that," she added, chest tight as she did so. And her younger self turned her gaze upward to look at her, just for a moment, before smiling.

And then Rey was back in the swirl of the ballroom, staring ahead at her reflection, and the card that she'd crumpled in her hand burst into a poof of smoke.

Gabrielle was free.
