Lillie managed to change the music so the fairy guard lets her through the door and up the first set of stairs.

Unfortunately the second floor is a mirrored maze. So much for the idea of sticking to the wall to find the door on the third floor out to the dais. Lillie will try for a while, and get kind of lost before winding up at the beginning again about half an hour later.

Lillie will sit down on the ground for a while and talk this through with Clefairy and totally not cry because she's her Z-powered best and can do this!

Lillie for Penny Pt 3

As she sits there, she notices the reflections in the 6 mirrored walls surrounding her don't exactly track to her movements, as if they were studying and trying to mirror her. It dawned on Lillie this was an illusion.

"Like Ulu-la‘i-o-walu!" Lillie grabbed Clefairy and stood up happily. In Alolan mythos, the kukui tree that directed souls to the spirit realm appeared half dead, half green and Phantump would try to mislead travellers. But the trick was ignoring what you could see and trusting that the dead side was still alive, just appearing dry.

"We can't trust our eyes here, Clefairy!"

"Clef!" the Pokemon puffed cheerfully. Lillie set her down and held out a hand for her Pokemon to grasp. "Follow me"

She placed a hand against the wall and cast her eyes away from the mirrors. Keeping her hand constantly against the wall moving forward She found herself faced with another guard.

This one wouldn't let her pass unless she brought him a drink. Which meant

COMMENCE SIDE QUEST 3: GET THE FAIRY A DRINK

Which meant going back thorough the maze. 😐

This time, Lillie left a trail of feathers from her shoulder piece.

Lillie for Penny Pt 4

Acquiring a drink</i>, Lillie covers the champagne flute on her hand, and dashes off as soon as Anakin lets her go. She slips past the dancing first floor guard in a rush of pink followed by Clefairy and went back up to the second floor.

While she had left a trail of pink feathers, servants cleaned while she was gone. The second floor now has bouquets of pink feathers at every intersection. They're not that distracting but are pretty wide, getting between Lillie and the wall a few times.

However she's gotten pretty decent at the labyrinth and, keeping her hand to the wall, snakes her way back to the second floor stairs to give the guard her drink and be allowed to climb to the third floor.

The stairs lead to a locked bedroom. Just being there makes Lillie yawn. It is going on 3 A.M. by now.

COMMENCE SIDE QUEST 4: ESCAPE THE ROOM (anddon'tgotosleep)

Lillie tries the door, unable to open it, but finding a keyhole with three keys. She goes to the vanity, starting to look for them in the drawers and surfaces. Meanwhile, Clefairy hops on the bed, curls up and coos "Fairy...."

Lillie finds one key, though not to the door, instead to a locked box in the armoire. She could just take a short nap. But feels so much more tired than that. "No...not now Clefairy." But yawns, going to look over by the bed. Maybe under a pillow...

She can feel if it's there with her head.

Sam's been trying to keep an eye on where Lillie's gotten to with mixed success given how much she's wandering around. He did spot her heading into the maze this time though and grabbed a drink and some food for good measure on his way to follow her. The fairies weren't super keen on this but since it's Lillie's trial RPG logic says that if an NPC wants an item they have to take the item. Enjoy your fucking champagne.

They did manage to hold him up a bit though so by the time he found her she was fully asleep. TBH he was starting to get a bit tired himself... but mostly he was just pissed off and increasingly impatient with this whole thing. Once he figured out the door out was locked he didn't even bother with looking for keys - he grew up in a kind of crappy house where sometimes doors just got stuck (and sometimes people locked themselves in their rooms in the middle of a tantrum). He's got this. He grabbed the cutlery from the tray he'd brought and spent a while fiddling around with the pins in the door hinges, getting the edges of the knife and fork under the tops of them so he could pry them out.

Plus side: pushing doors over was really satisfying. Also noisy. Oops.

Lillie for Penny Pt 4

The clattering noise wakes Lillie up, but just barely. She had a key shaped mark pressed into her cheek and the key still curled in her hand as she sat up blearily blinking herself awake. When she realized there was someone else in the room she woke a lot faster, pulling the sheet in front of her, and causing the curled up pokemon to roll onto its side. "Wha--"

No, Lillie realized, it was a person she recognized the person. "Sam..?" She squinted her eyes behind the white and pink leather mask, and dropped the blanket, reaching up to fix the slightly skewed mask as she tried to piece together why she was here in a way that was slower than just waking up in the morning.

This wasn't her room. But she felt moderately rested.

Fucking fairy magic. At least getting the door open had woken her, though she still looked a bit fuzzy in the same way he felt like he probably would be if he let himself stop being angry. "Come on." He wasn't stupid - even though he was really wishing for his actual wings or the shield or really anything that wasn't a now slightly scraped up set of cutlery he waited for her by the destroyed door rather than the exit back to the maze. He damn well knew she wasn't turning back. The noise of the door falling had done more than wake her though, and she hadn't yet gotten to her feet when one of the fairies appeared at the exit.

It wasn't necessarily Sam's fault that his first instinct was to punch the man(?). Not that his fist ever actually connected; the next moment he found himself standing back outside the Avengers' place, mask in hand. Fuck.

Lillie for Penny Pt 5

Lillie's eyes widened as the fairy grabbed Sam's mask. and he disappeared in a swirl of pink feathers. She kept her hand on her cheek and was suddenly glad it hadn't moved more in her short (but surprisingly restful) sleep.

"Here's your key." She held it out. When the fairy took it with an irritated look, Lillie turned to pick up Clefairy. Slipping out of the bed, she kept her eyes on it, and the small pink pokemon between them as she edged through the room and through the door. It seemed that counted enough. Though Lillie was starting to wonder how many people would have to sacrifice themselves for this quest.

And if they were okay. But she couldn't let that sacrifice be in vain.

Lillie picked up her pace moving down the hall. She didn't find a set of stairs, instead only about a dozen closed doors, identical to the one Sam had kicked on the floor, six on each side.

COMMENCE SIDE QUEST 5 FIND THE RIGHT DOOR.

This was it, One of these doors had to lead out to the dais.

Lillie looked over her shoulder towards the fairy who was pre-occupied putting the fallen door back in place. And then back at the 12 in front of her. She tried to retrace her steps as best she could to at least narrow it down to one side of the hall.

But the maze made it basically impossible to reason with any certainty. So she walked about halfway down the hall and opened the third door.

Lillie for Penny Pt 6A

Lillie picked the third door on the right side of the hall. The knob turned easily, but instead of opening, a riddle scrawled itself across the wood panelling at exactly the right height for her to read it.

I can only live where the light shines but die if light shines on me

Lillie shrugged at Clefairy. Whatever it was, they'd have to deal with it. She pushed the door open.

The room inside was completely dark. Lillie didn't exactly love the dark. Caves creeped her out, she didn't like passing through tunnels at night, but she had Clefairy at her side, even if she couldn't see her. And this was a challenge for a reason--like the Poni Island one she had never finished. But something brushed against her on her left side where Clefairy wasn't.

Lillie gasped. She felt something else behind her. Clefairy gave a hesitant "Clefaaaaaa," clearly encountering the same trepidation. Something hit against her hard from the front, knocking her back onto the ground. Her hands reached back to catch her as she flinched. "Clefairy!" She called out to her friend. Clefairy cried out as well, further away now. The creature in the dark slashed out at Lillie again. She wanted to cry.

But a champion didn't cry. They thought things through. And the despite the onslaught. Lillie had to too. The words from the door came to mind. Alive where light was. Dies in light.</i> There was no light in the room. But there could be.

"Clefairy! MOONBLAST!" she called out to the pokemon who sang a soft song and summoned a pale silver moon that, in a blinding flash illuminated the room. The creature--or creatures?-- shrieked with an unearthly scream and retreated from the light. Lillie pushed herself forward and crawled across to grab Clefairy.

In the moment she could see another door across from where she had entered the room, and she could see an open one to their right. "Moonblast again!" She used the fleeting light to crawl out of the room like there was rising smoke and call the Pokemon to her.

There was light in the new room. So they were safe for now.

Lillie took a moment to catch her breath and hug the pokemon close. It heart was racing far less than hers. If there was another door, that didn't work with the way she had seen the dais. She was on the wrong side of the hall. And didn't want to risk too many more wrong doors.

There were two doors in this room, one that led back to the hall, and one that led to the fifth room on this side of the all. She wanted to go back to the hall.

Lillie finally stood up and fixed her dress. Glad the mask made her appear braver than she felt, but borrowing its resolution. She walked to the door to the hall and opened it.

Behind it was another door. Just small enough to fit in the frame. She opened that door. It continued, each door a few inches smaller than the last, until the door was barely the size of a large dog door. Clefairy could fit through it. Lillie wasn't entirely sure she could.

She let the fairy Pokemon slip through and then got back on the ground. It took her a while, and probably wasn't the intended exit, but Lillie was fairly small at 15 and managed, to slither her way through. She exhaled deeply as she slid her legs back into the hallway and sank against the wall. The fairy had repaired the door, she noted.

"Ok. So... other side."

Lillie for Penny Pt 6B

Lillie pushed herself up, checked for her card, and stood back up. She was leaning against the fourth door on the right, right across from the fourth door on the left and opened it.

It opened to a set of stairs. That was as ominous as it was promising. "Come on Clefairy" Lillie started up the stairs that seemed to go on forever. But she'd fallen asleep once when she let her guard down, she ignored the desire to stop and sit down. After what seemed like ages, she saw a light at the top. She nearly ran to it.

Lillie found herself on the dais, a large silver platform on which several elaborately dressed fairies lounged and their servants attended to them. "You!" she shouted across it to the fairy whose eyes she had met nearly five hours ago." She took the card from the neck of her dress where she had tucked it and threw it at the fairy's feet.

"Through dangers untold and hardships unnumbered, I have fought my way here to the dais atop the faerie ball to take back the woman you have stolen. For my will is as strong as yours and my power as great. I challenge you to a pokemon duel!"

Lilly for Penny Part 6C

Clefairy moved in front of Lillie defensively as the tall fairy rose from their divan. From the shadows it crafted a menacing doglike creature. It wasn't any pokemon Lillie had ever seen before, but perhaps it was like the shadow creatures.

"Start with Twinkle Tackle!" The pokemon danced around, leaving a trail of glitter in its wake before tackling the dog. It flinched, but didn't fall like she expected. It returned with a whip of vines that made the smaller pokemon cry out and pull back.

The creature and Clefairy went back and forth for a few rounds of combat before the large and lightning fast dog tackled the smaller fairy. Clefairy cried out, unable to dodge. She wasn't out yet, or she wouldn't have been had her mask not been knocked off.

"Clefairy!" Lillie cried out as the pokemon disappeared in a flash of light as if it had been called back into a pokeball.

The fairy looked at Lillie expectantly, but Lillie didn't have another usable pokemon.

She clutched her hands in front of her and looked down. She wondered what would happen since she lost.

But Lillie hadn't lost. The dormant pokemon at her waist jingled affectionately when she caught its eye. Nebby had been Lillie's first pokemon, and though she had given him to Selene and Selene had evolved him into a powerful Lunala, the Portal had seen fit to give Nebby to Lillie before the ritual on Poni Island as an energetic Cosmog.

But in the cruise's form of Alola, her travels had led to Cosmog evolving into the latent Cosmoem. He couldn't do much, teleport from danger, and flail helplessly. But that was better than nothing.

But Nebby had believed in Lillie to protect him when he was small and Lillie scared. She had to put her faith in him. Lillie unclipped the pokemon from her belt, causing it to flutter slowly to the floor.

"NEBBY! GO! COSMIC POWER!" she called out.

Nebby responded instead by emitting a dazzling flare of rainbow light that caused the shadow dog to shrink back. When the light died down, a large white lion stood where the small cocoon had stood.

Nebby had evolved.

Lillie seemed as stunned as the fairies on the platform. In fact it was there movement that stirred her back to sense. "Nebby. Um...." She stammered trying to think of an attack in the legends. The dog lunged at Nebby in her hesitation.

"S-Sunsteel strike!"

The lion leapt up into the air, summoning a fireball when the other fairy yelled out "Wait!", conceding. "You can have your human."

Lillie called Nebby back and hugged him. The shadow dog returned to its mistress. Lillie smiled across the dais. Fairies weren't so bad, she had always thought. As much as people liked to pretend they were worse just because they were different, they cared about their loved ones just the same.

She would stay here until Penny was released.
