Hi there! I’m Janet.

Fun fact: Though Dr. Alexander Wood, the inventor of the hypodermic needle, is in The Good Place, he only missed being sent to The Bad Place by 312 points. Incest and torture are, as a general rule, frowned upon, no matter the reason.

With that in mind, I do not have skin or a circulatory system, so I can be neither infected nor innoculated. The experience was fun, though!

I wouldn’t know, but I can direct you to several essays on moral philosophy if you’d like to decide for yourself!

Perhaps you could provide me with whatever the equation is that you are referencing? And I'm curious as to what thoughts you have on it, or why not, as the question may be.

I would love to!

Every action a human takes that makes any kind of impact on those around them is given a set number of points. These points can be either negative or positive, depending on the impact. For example, helping your mom with her printer is +60.09 points. Telling a woman to 'smile' is -53.83 points. The more impactful the action, the higher the points gained or lost. For example, sexual harassment is -731.26 points, while saving a child from drowning is +1202.33 points. At the end of a human's life, the points are totaled, and their overall impact is considered. If their point total is positive, then their impact on the world during their lifetime is positive, and they are sent to The Good Place. If their point total is negative, thus indicating that their impact was negative, then they are sent to The Bad Place.

In the case of Dr. Alexander Wood, his invention of the hypodermic needle has saved countless lives, and will save countless more. The amount of points he deserved for it were hotly debated, but there was no doubt that they would be astronomically positive. However, he did in fact marry his first cousin in a time where it was becoming increasingly clear that such action often resulted in children with severe birth defects, some of which could increase the difficulty and mortality of pregnancy. Furthermore, injecting unwitting patients with needles filled with untested substances without explaining why or obtaining their consent is objectively torturous. Both actions had an inarguably negative impact. As such, whether he deserved to be in The Good Place or The Bad Place was a point of contention among their respective recruiters, but they were ultimately able to decide that his overall impact was positive, if only slightly.

Fun Fact: There has been only time in which such a close call did not culminate in the placement of the human in either the Good or Bad Place. Instead, an entire realm designed to be what she would undoubtedly consider 'basically okay' was invented to host her solitary, eternal existence. It has been named The Medium Place.

I hope that this cleared things up!

It provided a clearer picture of the utilitarian system used where you come from. If possible, I would like to know more about who determines the point values and who developed this system in the first place. As your explanation and examples show, it's a dynamic system. Humans do new things. It will always be in flux, and how actions are defined and valued, how effects are determined and where they are limited, determines how the points will add up. Define it a different way, and many of those "slightly good" or "slightly bad" people could end up somewhere else.

A tangential line or reasoning raises questions of what makes either place Good or Bad.

The creators of the system (and me!) and those that determine the point values are one in the same: The Makers of Light, Darkness, and Everything. Unfortunately, I cannot expand any further than that on who they are or their basis for the system, because Janets are not programmed with that information. Very few beings, be they architects, Janets, judges, or management, know anything but what I have shared about the Makers. They feel very strongly that their isolation is the key to the system operating smoothly. If they have input to give or disputes to settle in regards to the system, they simply send a memo to management, detailing their wishes.

...Please excuse me why I try something new.

I agree.

Hmm.

Oh that is very good. Not that you agreed with me in particular, but taking your own point of view on something. I would be happy to hear more, if you want to expand on it.

I agree! It has been exceedingly fun, though not informative, as I am the one that provided the information.

If you need me, just call for me!

We can always learn to look at the same information in new ways. With my friends' help and perspective, I learned more from what I already knew than I had seen before.

Thank you. If you are busy, I do not mind waiting.
