My first weekend in Tumbleweed was spent with plaster, paint and one too many exhausting trips to the hardware store.

Does anybody here do handyman work? The labor I hired are unsatisfactory.

[Private to Padme]

Ms Naberrie, may I introduce myself; I am Mycroft Holmes. You might have already been notified about me. I have been given a post in the Mayor's office, and shall be working along side of you.

Is that so? What are your thoughts about the Holmes' name? Does it disturb you?

That is very generous of you. Ordinarily, I would turn down such an offer, because a hard day's work ought to be properly salaried. However, as it is I'm in a bit of a financial bind, having just arrived without a cent to my name. I've been making purchases on credit and borrowed money, accruing a debt, Until I begin earning my salary at the Mayor's office, my expenses must needs be tight.

Perhaps we could come to some sort of agreement. An exchange of services, of sorts?

No, not at all. Why would it disturb me? [...] I just read a lot of books as a kid. Including the ones that were mostly about your brother and the crimes he's solved.

When I first showed up in a new world, there wasn't even a system of money, it was just everyone helping each other out. I still think that's something we should be doing, since we're all in the same boat. I'm sure even if I don't need your particular skills right now, you could find a way to pay it forward. Using your position to help out other refugees from time to time, when you can. That kind of thing.

I ask only because in my experience, some people become disturbed when they meet person the fictional characters with whom they're familiar. This is old hat with you now, yet you felt it necessary to bring up that you knew my surname and the story where it's from? Why is that, I wonder?

My experience was quite the opposite. In the place I was previous to being brought here, I was permitted to bring my belongings, as well as transfer my bank account. Now it's my turn to start from scratch, as it were.

The offer still stands, should you require them. And to honor your request, I'll see to it that others are helped, if it's within my power to do so.

Oh, I'm used to that. I was fictional in my home universe before I even got here. [...] It's just that sometimes it gets awkward when I already know certain things, and I figure honesty's a better policy than trying to pretend I don't know anything about you.

Really? Where were you before? I've never heard of anyone being transported to a place and getting to choose things to bring with them.

If I need any help from you, I'll let you know. I do appreciate the offer. And I'm definitely still willing to help renovate your place.

I've been doing some reading about you, Mr Winchester. You've lived a very interesting and dangerous life.

It was this island country called Preya, located in some pocket dimension Heaven knows where. The rulers of Preya send emissaries out to people at a low point in their life with an offer to come with them to 'start over'. You're permitted to bring your belongings, but once there you may never leave, even if you've changed your mind. The rulers of Preya were a mysterious group who nobody had ever seen, even I, who was a Council Member, the highest office in that land.

The place you mentioned, where you were before, I assume was Weathertop?

Thank you. Please let me know when it's convenient with your schedule to come by.

That's an understatement, but yes. As a plus side, if you'd like any warding against the supernatural built into your room, that's another specialty of mine.

[...] Huh. That's a new one on me. You decided to take the deal, I gather - and then the portal had other ideas for you.

Mt. Weather. Here, it's just a military bunker in Virginia, but there it was one of the last places still standing in a post-nuclear war wasteland.

Tomorrow afternoon? I'm at the hardware store in the morning again. If there's anything last minute you need, you can stop by then and I'll give you my employee discount as a bonus.

I was trying to be discreet. [...] May I observe? Then men are coming to lay down the new flooring later this week - would such a ward still work beneath that?

The rulers of Preya knew when to ask, when you were most vulnerable. They are masters of manipulation, that way. But, precisely. Which, to be honest, was welcome. There were certain undesirable elements in Preya, which I'm relieved to be rid of, in Tumbleweed. Hopefully these same elements won't follow us to Tumbleweed.

I've been briefly told about the place. It sounds rather austere, if not horrifying. How long were you there?

Thank you. Tomorrow afternoon would be perfect.

It's okay. A lot of people here know a lot about me, and I'm not trying to keep anything a secret.

A ward would work beneath your floors, yes. And it would be a lot more permanent that way, more difficult to break. You're welcome to watch, and I'll explain everything that I'm doing.

What kind of elements, if you don't mind me asking? Just about anything could show up here, so it's good to know about things ahead of time whenever possible.

I was there for over a year, probably closer to two. Then I was on an island for a few months, and then in Tumbleweed, then in space, then Tumbleweed, then Tumbleweed in the past, and then back to present. I've lost track of my overall timeline in all that, so all I can give you is an estimate.

I'll be there, then. One o'clock should work.

It's hard to keep anything a secret here, when one may only Google or YouTube most if not all your life.

Specifically, Jim Moriarty. Not strictly the kind of demon you're accustomed to dealing with, but a demoniac person, nevertheless. I assume you're familiar with my source material enough that you recognize the name? I can only trust that if somebody that dangerous comes through the portal, the military will keep him in quarantine, indefinitely.

Sounds like quite the roller coaster ride. Are such occurrences common in Tumbleweed?

Thank you, Mr Winchester.

Yep. Basically. I'd rather people heard my life story from me, but I can't fault anyone for googling me; I do it sometimes myself.

Oh. Yes, I have heard of him. I'd rather he didn't show up here either. I'm not exactly sure what the military would do; so far as I know they've never kept anyone in quarantine indefinitely. But there's a first time for everything.

If you're here long enough, I think you'll probably end up seeing some of the roller coaster yourself. But just because that's been the pattern doesn't mean it's a sure thing.

You're welcome. And you can call me Sam.

Are you going to do it for me? If you haven't already?

For all we know, there's a group of people that have come through the portal that the military hasn't allowed tablets, and were immediately locked up after they've been determined to be undesirable elements.

If it's all the same to you, I'd prefer to keep it formal.

I haven't, and I wasn't planning on it. As a rule, I mostly do it when I suspect someone might be hostile, and therefore would be less forthcoming. With everyone else, I like to get to know them the normal way.

That's also true.

[...] Okay. So, should I call you Mr. Holmes?

I suppose it's more rewarding the 'normal way'.

Please, do. Thank you.

It's truer to a person's lived experience, I think. There's always an outside perspective when it's from wikipedia.

Alright, Mr. Holmes.

I automatically read people, without the use of the internet, so it makes little difference to me.
