After the…altercation…with Packard on Friday night, Alex had been rather antsy. Unlike what Packard would want her to do, and she was entirely sure he would expect her to go running straight to Conor, she hadn’t said a word to her mate. No, she was positive that Packard wanted her to go to Conor because it wouldn’t only make her look like a weak woman who needed her mate to fight her battles for her as well as it would push Conor to react.
She had hoped it would just pass over; instead, it was Conor who had came to her with questions.
One of the others, or it could possibly have been Tommy for all she knew, had gone to Conor and told him everything that had happened. Conor had then gone looking for her, though she hadn’t been hard to find, and asked her to tell him everything that had happened. Despairingly, she had done so. She was upset that any of it had happened and wondered briefly if her being here really was good for the pack. She then decided that was something Packard wanted her to think. Conor wouldn’t want her here if he thought she was more harm than good.
Conor wasn’t happy at all with what had happened; she could see the fury boil just under the surface. She knew that something was going to happen, she just didn’t know when.
So, Alex was antsy and walking about on pins and needles unsure of when the fireworks would happen. Saturday came and went without problems, though there had been whispers and looks. Early Sunday morning Alex just couldn’t take the tension that rested on her shoulders any longer and decided a run, in human form of course, was needed; just something to stretch her legs. She was halfway across town when Declan called her telling her to get back to the clubhouse.
Packard had returned and a challenge to Conor had been made.
Alex hurried back to the clubhouse and an hour later everyone was gathered outside. She took place next to Declan at the front and stood silently, the other wolves around her going silent when Conor spoke. This shouldn’t be happening, she thought. If she weren’t here, would it even be? She didn’t know and wasn’t sure it mattered. Things happened for a reason, right? Regardless, it was going to cost a pack member their life, either Packard’s or Conor’s, unless one of them conceded and she doubt that would happen with either one of them; her money was on Conor, it always had been and it always would be.
She watched as the fight started, watched as each man took a blow. Packard was ignorant if he didn’t think Conor didn’t know how to fight in human form. He was a force to be reckoned with, this she knew and an even bigger force in wolf form.
Blow after blow was delivered, sweeping of legs taking them down, rolling on the ground and fighting. Still, Alex held her ground beside Declan. Instinct wanted her to go and protect the man she loved, and she was very well the tension that vibrated off of Declan was him fighting his instinct to protect his alpha, best friend, and brother.
It wasn’t until the smell of burning silver hit her senses that the urge to jump in became almost unbearable. She knew that Conor wouldn’t cheat, he was too proud for that. He would win the right way or lose with grace. She took a deep breath, trying to steady her inner self when Declan’s hand came to rest upon her shoulder. It was a comforting touch, a knowing touch; he knew she wanted to protect her mate and was fighting an internal battle of what she should and shouldn’t do. Glancing up at him, she gave a grateful smile and raised a hand to put over his as she turned back to the fight, her fingers curling around his huge hand and keeping it in place.
When Conor got the upper hand and had his arm wrapped around Packard’s neck, she hoped the man would concede. It was no surprise that he didn’t, that he wouldn’t; and so Conor had to do what he had to do. Alex watched as Conor snapped the other man’s neck and then slowly rose to his feet. Her heart swelled with pride for her mate, for her Alpha, but it also broke because he had had to kill.
Thankfully, no one else wanted to challenge the alpha. That made her breathe a little easier and she watched as she started towards the door to the clubhouse, his back to them. Then, he was asking for a vote on her. She wanted to protest, a death of a pack member had just happened, but it wasn’t up to her to do so. Instead, she remained quiet as her eyes stayed on his back.
His vote, of course, wasn’t a surprise but the other many yes’ that came after his was. She felt Declan squeeze her shoulder, returning the squeeze of his hand before letting it go. Conor had gone back inside and she slowly stepped forward, going straight to where Packard’s body laid. She went to her knees, her fingers going to make sure eyelids were closed. “I’m sorry,” she whispered and then said an Irish blessing/prayer. When she stood back up, she found Declan standing beside her, and odd look on his face; he hadn’t expected that. “Make sure he gets a proper burial?” She asked and received a nod.
“Go,” Declan said gruffly. “I’ll take care of this.” He knew she wanted to get to Conor.
“Thank you,” she smiled softly at him and then looked around as everyone else started to disperse before she made her way inside.
She walked slowly through the clubhouse, her mind racing and she was worried about Conor. Running to him, though, might make him seem weak or that she saw him as such and she didn’t want that. Instead, she took a little time; she stopped to talk to a couple of members who were excited for her and then she went to the bar and grabbed two glasses and a bottle of whiskey before making her way to their bedroom.
Silently she entered the room and shut the door behind her. Setting the glasses on a nearby table, she filled them with the whiskey and looked at her mate. “Conor…” she spoke quietly, fighting the urge to run to him and put her arms around him. She needed to see where his head was before she acted.
