Brian
There was a sign neatly taped to Brian's door. It said, simply:

<--
Tea, biscuits, heat pads and sympathy this way.

Beneath which was a comic-style sketch of a muddy Brian stumbling toward a pile of provisions. It was clear enough who had left the message, though Teddy hadn't signed his name.

"I am valiantly attempting not to judge you, since you're my friend and bringer of tea."

"See," Teddy said earnestly, blond bangs falling into his eyes. He did earnest very, very well. "That's why I'm bribing you to like me; so you won't judge me for my obviously geeky choices in life."

"It's working for the moment," Brian said, shrugging. "But if the biscuits aren't as delicious next time? I can't make promises."

"That's okay, I'm unfortunately pretty used to living in that kind of uncertainty."

Brian raised an eyebrow and asked, "You do know I was joking, right?"

"Pretty much, yes. If you weren't, I don't think you would have giving me warning!"

"Still, I don't like the sound of that 'living in uncertainty' bit."

"I'm sorry," Teddy said quickly. "I wasn't trying to say anything by it."

"Still." Brian stood with a little sigh and shifted over so he was sitting next to Teddy, then put his arm around him, pulling him into a loose, playful headlock. He smelled sharply of sweat and mud and boy, and it didn't get any better when he tugged Teddy in a little closer. "Once I have friends, I don't drop them, see? No uncertainty."

Teddy put a tentative hand on Brian's back, flushed and laughing. "Okay," he said, grinning up at him. "You can stop the gangster talk; I trust you, I promise!"

"Do you? I don't think I believe you." He shook Teddy a little, still playing. It'd been a long time since he'd rough-housed.

"Hey, I can't fight back!" he jokingly protested. "You're too sad and sore."

"It's true," Brian agreed. He let go and ruffled Teddy's hair. "It's why I befriend gentlemen. Too honorable to fight back sad old me."

"Not to mention smelly," Teddy pointed out, sitting up. His hair was a mess and his cheeks were flushed, dimples flashing. There was little wonder some high school girl had formed a crush. "You smell terrible."

"Do I? I didn't exactly try."

Teddy always smelled a little aquatic, a little like spices, and a little like something impossible to put one's finger on. Something out of this world.

"This isn't cologne?" Brian sniffed again, almost nuzzling. He couldn't tell how this could be an actual human smell.

"Um. No." His stupid crush on the straight boy was climbing into higher and scarier territory quicker than he could adjust to. "It's just me."

Brian took another, tipping his head in thanks. "Also, be prepared to carry my bruised body back to my room. Assistant's duties, you see."
