Brian
There was a sign neatly taped to Brian's door. It said, simply:

<--
Tea, biscuits, heat pads and sympathy this way.

Beneath which was a comic-style sketch of a muddy Brian stumbling toward a pile of provisions. It was clear enough who had left the message, though Teddy hadn't signed his name.

Blearily, Brian stared at the sign. He was still filthy and covered in sweat, and a shower and bed would probably be a better idea. But frankly, nothing sounded better than tea and sympathy.

He headed down the hall, having to concentrate far too hard on putting one foot in front of the other. Luckily, he only had to go so far as the common area before he found Teddy waiting.

"Are you a mirage?" he asked, only half-kidding. He looked exhausted, as terrible as Brian Braddock was capable of looking. His clothes were muddy, sweat keeping a layer of dirt sticking to his face and hair.

Teddy bounded to his feet, dropping his book on the table. Brian looked terrible.

Well, he had to amend, as terrible as Brian could look.

"I prefer to think of myself as an oasis," he said, pulling out a chair and turning it for Brian. "Here, sit before you-- Oh, do you need a shower first? Or clothes? I can get you clothes."

"Tea first," Brian said pitifully, dropping into the seat. "Please, tea."

"Earl Grey, English Breakfast, or Darjheeling? I tried to cover my bases," he said, pushing a cup toward Brian. There was a pot of hot water, sugar, honey, and spoons waiting nearby.

"Oh, I think I love you," he said gratefully, taking the cup. "Darjheeling, please."

"Two confessions of love in one day; I think I'm starting to really like it here," Teddy said with a laugh, handing him the Harvey and Sons tea bag. He poured the hot water for both of them, selecting his own tea bag and letting to steep. "Honey or sugar?"

"A pet name already?" he teased weakly. "Sugar. And who else is in love with you today?"

"What? Oh. No, I'd try to be more creative than that, though I'll admit to a stupid weakness for sweetheart. I blame movies."

He handed Brian the sugar.

"And some high school girl, Marie. Do you know many of the high schoolers?"

Brian shook his head as he dumped an obscene amount of sugar into his cup. "Fortunately, no. I left the high schoolers behind when I left high school. Did you let her down gently?"

"I told her I loved her shoes. That was the best I could do at the moment." Teddy made a wry face.

"If that doesn't put the message out, I don't know what will." Brian added a touch of milk to his tea, then took a cautious sip. With an almost pornographic moan, he said, "Oh, you're lovely, Teddy Altman. Thank you."

Teddy smiled in open, uncomplicated pleasure. "You're welcome. Here," he added, nudging over the plate of cookies. "Did you want a heat pad, too?"

"Not yet. Maybe the tea will do all the work." He took a cookie, though, and bit into it before asking, "What were you doing when I was off dying in the mud? Beside breaking girls' hearts?"

"Playing Arkham Asyulum and watching season one of Buffy. I probably should try to come up with something cooler in case anyone asks, huh?"

"See," Teddy said earnestly, blond bangs falling into his eyes. He did earnest very, very well. "That's why I'm bribing you to like me; so you won't judge me for my obviously geeky choices in life."

"Still." Brian stood with a little sigh and shifted over so he was sitting next to Teddy, then put his arm around him, pulling him into a loose, playful headlock. He smelled sharply of sweat and mud and boy, and it didn't get any better when he tugged Teddy in a little closer. "Once I have friends, I don't drop them, see? No uncertainty."

"Do you? I don't think I believe you." He shook Teddy a little, still playing. It'd been a long time since he'd rough-housed.
