Museum
[OOC note: for Alice and Ianto; time period undecided as of yet]

The school term has ended, and with kids home from school comes needing to keep them entertained. Some parents find that tedious, but it's a relief for Alice to watch Steven herself. They've gone to the museum for the day; Steven pleaded to see the fossils again. Crazy about dinosaurs, that boy. If he knew about her father's pterodactyl...

That's not going to happen, of course, though on the subject of her father, he'd hinted to her in a phonecall that the museum's collection of vintage photography might just contain some shots of him. Studying the pictures is like a more interesting and slightly unnerving "Where's Wally?" She's trying to decide if a background figure is actually her father when she realizes that Steven has wandered off instead of staying at her side.

Silently cursing herself for focusing so much on the display instead of her son, Alice goes jogging through the museum rooms to look for him. She can hear the echoing of him calling hellos to someone.

"Do you mean writing a book about zombies themselves, or writing a book about other people writing books about zombies? Because either way... doesn't seem very creative, does it?"

"Either. Or both. But yeah, writing a book just because that's what's selling..."

"Suppose it's writing for the market and caring about the money instead of the actual writing."

Steven cheerfully suggests, "Let's sell dinosaurs!"

"Meanwhile the real writers can't get published. I'm glad I'm not one of them."

Steven looks proud of himself. "In diamonds!"

"Well, now, just because something's popular doesn't mean it's not good. Maybe they've been trying to get it published for a long time and then whatever subject they wrote about just happens to become popular."

He nods. "That is true...So where do we get those?"

"Oh, I'm not saying popular means bad, just that it seems like a lot of fad books get published. Celebrity diets and memoirs and the like, or a slew of books all on the same subject. It's strange seeing how Steven's books go through trends. One month the children's section is filled with some particular series, next it's something new. Of course, it looks like the Harry Potter ones don't budge."

Steven considers that while he's looking at a fossil. "Jewelery store?"

"Well, the publishing business is a business. They're in it to make money, same as everyone else."

He walks over to where Steven is standing to get a better look at the fossil. "Yeesss...But I think a dinosaur by itself would be more fun. How would you get it out of the diamond?"

Steven gives Ianto a 'duuuuh' look. "No, silly, the dinosaurs are all extinct and... and dee-com-posted. They broke down into things and then the earth squashed them down and that made them into diamonds! You can't turn them back into dinosaurs! They'd have to be really small ones."

"Awwww." Steven's marketing ideas are soon forgotten, of course, as he gets caught up in the dinosaur exhibit.

Alice keeps her voice low, not wanting anyone and especially Steven to overhear. "How is your 'pet' doing?"

"Quite exotic, one-of-a-kind. Does she get lonely?"

Steven was trying to compare his hand to a fossil of a dinosaur's footprint by putting his hand into it, rather than just holding his hand up.
