The Arrival of the Doctor's Daughter
Jenny runs down the corridor of the large temple, and then around the corner. She presses her back up against the wall, catching her breath before shouting, "Hey, I was just trying to help!" She winces at the sound of approaching gunfire.

Apparently, they don't want her help. Never did, really.

Jenny had arrived on the planet only hours ago, her shuttle in need of refueling. Moments after getting out of her shuttle, she had literally run into a group of Malinaks. Malinaks are tall, thin, blue creatures with two bulging green eyes and eight tentacles that line the tops of their heads. They speak a sort of broken English, an English that is combined with another language she doesn't know so that she literally understands only every other word.

But she had very quickly realized that they were panicked. And it had something to do with a glowing crystal, some sort of religious artifact that was out of reach for the Malinaks. Well, this is what exploring is all about for Jenny! Exploring new planets, meeting new races, and helping out where she can. So she asked where this crystal was supposed to be, and they lead her straight to it. It was in the back of these black caves, stuck up in a high spot, but not unreachable. To be honest, she hadn't been able to understand why the Malinaks couldn't just retrieve it themselves. Or why they had seemed so worried, shouting warnings, as she nimbly climbed the cave wall and picked the crystal up.

Jenny shakes her head at the thought now, muttering to herself, "Religious artifact." Which is only apparently allowed to be touched by the head of the Malinak clan, who happens to be missing. Which is why the Malinaks had been so worried---they didn't know who would be able to retrieve it for their daily prayers. She mutters again, "Oh, yes, I know all that now. Fat lot of good it does me, I've already committed sacrilege."

The footsteps and the gunfire are getting closer and closer. Jenny scans the corridor for anything, any way out, but apparently she's hit a dead end. And then she looks up. Jenny can't help but grin. She jumps up, grabbing onto a metal bar, wrapping her arms and legs around it. She waits for the Malinaks to pass her, to walk right beneath her.

But they never come. Because soon Jenny is falling, hard and fast, but she can't remember ever letting go of the bar. And, in one eye blink, she is slamming into the concrete in the middle of Cardiff.

Jenny turns to look at the woman, "Yeah, just a bit lost. No worries, though. Can you tell me, where are we exactly? What planet?"

She continues to take in her surroundings. Wherever she is, it's a lot different than the planets she's been to as of late. So many have been a mixture of old and new. Extremely old-looking structures and buildings, but with hints of technology that give away just what time she is living in. But this world...it's different. She mostly just see things that look, well, old. "...And what year?"

How can someone be so chipper after a fall like that? Alice can't understand having that kind of natural positivity. Still, from the questions, she gets the impression that this is the sort of case she needs to call in her father on, if he hasn't already detected whatever dumped this woman here.

Not like Alice can't handle this much on her own, of course. "You're in Cardiff, 2010. And Earth. What happened to you?"

Jenny's eyes widen even more when she hears the year, "2010? ...I was just with the Malinaks....it was the beginning of 6013... And then I was falling, I landed on this wonderfully hard concrete in...in 2010... How is that possible?"

Time travel. The only person she knows who has that ability is her father. Her father, who travels with his friend, Donna. A smile comes over her face, one tinged with sadness at the thought of the man she thinks of and misses every day...

But this is different, yeah? Her father, he chooses where he wants to travel, going on jaunts through time and space, helping out where he can. He doesn't just...fall into different times.

He doesn't get stuck.

How's it possible? "This is Cardiff," Alice says, like that explains everything. She should probably explain a bit further, though. "Apparently there's some sort of space-time rift here, and it sometimes lets things through, or pulls them through, something like that. I don't know very much about how it works."

Very much out of time, and apparently place, to go asking what planet. It's a very unusual situation for Alice, but she can't just walk away now. "What's your name?"

"This space-time rift, how does it choose who comes and goes? And how does everything get back to its time and place? Back...home?" Back to her shuttle, back to her life of exploration...

It's not that Jenny isn't grateful to this...rift for saving her, because she is. She wasn't eager to be found by the Malinaks, to be shot. Again. But...what if her father comes back? Visits her time again, visits Messaline? She knows her father still believes her to be dead, but he could still come back. It's why she stops back there from time to time, to check in, to see if anyone's heard anything. She wants to be there if he ever returns.

The woman's voice shakes Jenny from her thoughts, "Hmm? Oh, I'm Jenny. And you are?"

"I'm sorry, but I really don't know how it works, or what way there is to get back-- or if there is any. My... a relative of mine, he and some people he works with know about those things. If they haven't already figured out you're here, I could get you in contact with them. They might be able to help."

She gives Jenny a little nod to acknowledge what she said. "Hello, Jenny. I'm Alice. We should probably get that scrape cleaned up."

Jenny tries not to focus on the fact that there might not be a way back, but on the prospect of help. "All right then, let's get in contact with this relative of yours," she says, before adding, "And how, exactly, could he already know that I'm here? I've only just arrived."

She offers Alice a patented Jenny smile, "Nice to meet you, Alice. And it's not that bad, really. Most adventures comes with a few scrapes and bruises---the good ones, anyway." That, and she was created to be a solider. She has a high threshold for pain, seeing as she was bred to fight through it.

"A big part of his job is tracking what that rift does. Apparently they can tell when there's been some sort of activity, not always specifically what, though. We're, ah, not far from his... workplace." If you could call it that.

"Still, you could get an infection if you don't take care of that."

"He gets paid to look after things that come through a rift in time and space? What an odd job! Bet it's exciting, though. Never a dull moment." Jenny straightens the ponytail on top of her head, "Well then, lead the way. Let's go meet your relative."

She can't stop a cheeky grin from taking over her face, "It's all right, I'm a fast healer." All joking aside, "Still, you're right. I'll get it checked out. And thanks, Alice. For all of your help. Glad you were here when I dropped in."

"Has been for a long time now, yeah. It's definitely his niche. Lot of excitement, lot of danger, but I guess some people find that exciting."

She smiles over to Jenny. "If you'd be all right with it, we could go to a public toilet and use the sink there. It might be better to clean up before making introductions, yeah?" And since Torchwood doesn't have a medic any more, there wouldn't be much more to be done there than wash and bandage it. Then again, they may well have some sort of technology to help. She'd rather trust familiar soap and water. "You're welcome. Just so you know-- very few people know about that rift. If one of them had seen you instead, I don't know how they'd handle it. Just be careful what you say around the locals."

Alice has pretty much just described Jenny's life, "Yeah, it can be quite addictive. But it's worth it, especially when you're helping people. And it sounds like that's a big part of his job as well."

"Nah, it's all right. I'll clean it up in a bit---I'm sure your relative has seen more than his fair share of blood in his line of work. Can't wait to meet him. Sounds like we have a lot in common." Jenny then listens as Alice explains that the rift is quite the secret, that even the locals don't know about it. She nods her head, "Secret's safe with me. And it sounds like I'm even luckier than I thought, having you as the first person I met here on Earth."

"He does a lot of that, yeah. Not always directly, but the general saving the world with what he does, or the city or what have you. That's not the kind of life for me."

"That's true." Human, alien, his own... definitely must see a lot of blood. "I'm just going to warn him we're on the way."

She pulls her mobile back out, selects Jack, and sends him a brief text that she'll be coming through the tourist office soon. "There we go."

"No. I suppose it's not for everyone." Jenny pauses, "I was born a soldier. A fighter. It's in my blood. But my father taught me that I didn't... I didn't need to hurt or kill anyone to make a difference. To save lives. So I travel, from planet to planet, helping where I can. And enjoying every adventure that comes my way." She looks around, "Have to say, this one was a bit unexpected, though."

She watches as Alice sends a message to her relative. When she's finished, Jenny says, "And it may not seem like it, but obviously you do your part. Helped this alien find her way. That's gotta be something." She offers her a cheeky smile.

"That sounds like a difficult upbringing." She only has some very sketchy details of her own father's younger days, but she knows he became a soldier early as well. "Good for him. And for you. Definitely a much better way."

She's disbelieving at first; this young blonde an alien? But then she remembers her mother's stories about aliens that looked human, usually cautionary tales. Jenny seems all right, though. "We just need to head down towards the Bay. Won't be long."

Jenny never quite knows how to react when it comes to someone commenting on her life as a whole; she's been alive for less than a year. Though it's odd, the way she was programmed....she feels like she's been alive a lot longer. That she spent a lot of time in the dark, thinking purely as a soldier, as someone born to kill and then eventually die herself. And then her father brought her out into the sun.

Jenny simply nods, "It was difficult. And yeah, my dad's the best---brilliant."

She can tell that Alice is surprised that she's an alien. To be honest, the term doesn't mean much to her anymore. What is an alien, really? Someone foreign to the planet, yeah? So she's almost always an alien wherever she goes. "All right. And I'm not worried about time---got no where to else to go, right?"

"Is he going to wonder where you are? Do you have any way of contacting him?"

She takes the lead as they walk, making their way across the Plass and towards the buildings lining the water. "Fair point. I hope you'll be able to get home, though. Or at least while you're here, enjoy your time here."

Jenny nods, her emotions in regards to her father buried deep inside of her. Just another way she's like him, really; she has a habit of keeping her really personal thoughts to herself. And those that are shared, she tends to make light of. "No. He thinks I died." Last soldier of the war down. "And he's always running about, so there's no real way to get a hold of him."

"Me, too. I travel a lot, but I like to visit home every once in a while." Just in case he comes back. In case she has the chance to see him again. "And I know I'll enjoy my time here. Big new planet to explore."

"He thinks you're dead?" That's just... "But you want to get a hold of him and let him know you aren't, don't you?"

"Certainly plenty to see." She knew people in uni who'd gone or planned to go on grand tours. "And lots of ways to travel to them."

Jenny nods slowly, "I do. But it's not as if he carries a mobile, and no one ever knows where he's going to be..." Or when. "That's why I try to make it home when I can. I'm hoping he'll return at some point." To remember her, to visit what he thinks is her grave. And then he'll turn around, and surprise! ---there she'll be.

It's a nice thought. A bit of a fantasy, but not one she's willing to give up just yet.

"Not only an entire new planet to explore, but in a completely different millennium? I doubt I'll be getting bored anytime soon." Jenny grins.

"And hopefully your visits will overlap or he'll get a message, yeah? I hope it happens. Parent and child getting separated... that'd be hard enough without thinking you're dead."

"What year was it where you were?" She can't recall if Jenny said; they were a little busy dealing with the situation itself.

"That's the plan, yeah," Jenny says, her voice perfectly upbeat as she pushes on to the other subject she and Alice are discussing. "And where I'm from, it's the beginning of 6013. Already the start of a good year for my home planet, Messaline. The war's over, no more fighting. Everyone's just working really hard to build an amazing city." Her dad had set quite the foundation for it.

"6013? Wow, that's... awhile from now." And yet her father was born closer to that time than to the present-day. It's always strange to think about that. "What's Messaline like?"

They've come into view of the fake 'tourist office'. It occurs to Alice that, while she could put in a security code, she doesn't know if Jenny would have a great memory for that or not. Better to call and let someone open the way underground from the inside. If the door's unlocked, though, they could at least wait indoors while waiting to be let into the base itself.

Jenny nods, laughing lightly, "Yeah, it is. And Messaline... It used to be so dark, uninhabitable. All of the buildings were underground, connected by a system of tunnels." Her smile widens a bit, "And then it was terraformed. Instant new world, green and bright. Just removed a bit of the topsoil, and the city was no longer underground." She pauses, "The air's filled with excitement now. Everyone's gotten the chance to start over, so they're making the most of it."

"Terraforming is making it habitable, the atmosphere and such, yeah? I guess I imagined that'd be something that'd take longer, but then again, four thousand years..."

When they reach the tourist office, it's closed up with the sign out. She takes her mobile out again. "I guess he didn't check his messages. Just a moment." Once she's selected the new number, she gets her phone to her ear. "I'm calling the person who runs this part."
