After everything had settled down from the events of leaving Samuel's place, the moon, and then nailing his interview for the Carcosa club and, more specifically, its underbelly subsidiary, the Zahara Brothel in Atlantic City, Kanuna had decided to take one more night before finding someone else's couch to crash on. He knew he could ask outright and see if anyone had a spare bed, but it was harder to get on the internet without Clara's computer to borrow and that had led Kanuna to the local library to use their free computers and internet.
After staring at the screen for what felt like an hour, Kanuna simply decided he didn't have it in him to ask anyone. Things were already complicated with Samuel without him seeing Kanuna putting out an APB for a place to sleep indoors, out of the cold. He'd been spending the past several nights in the woods and using the gas station trucker stop in AC to shower. It was a life he was used to, living on the fringes while keeping an eye on Samuel. He almost wished, and not for the first time, that he'd held off longer in telling Samuel the truth. What good had it done him, anyway? If anything, it had made things worse. Sighing to himself, Kanuna closed the tab he'd been writing in and shut the computer down. He gathered the duffle bag that carried all his possessions and his guitar and made for the exit when it occurred to him how warm and dry the library was. Would be a shame to leave it and step out into the cold again. Changing direction, he headed instead for the third floor, seeking out an unoccupied room and found one all the way in the back. It housed some old newspapers and had a couch and a water fountain. Kanuna smiled and made himself at home there, using newspapers as a pillow and kicking off his boots to settle in. Something about the building resonated with him and he fell asleep easily and didn't wake until morning. |
