Thor was exhausted. He was well beyond that, really, and he struggled to stand guard of his home even now in the early evening hour. The god had pulled around a chair to sit and face the most prominent windows to the yard. Curtains thrown open so he could see outside, watch the ghosts come and go, he leaned forward with an elbow on one knee forearm braced over the other thigh, Mjolnir hanging from his hand. He looked as bad as he felt, which was pretty awful. Such weight had fallen on his shoulders, a weight he had deemed himself only fit to take. No one else should bear this burden least of all his brother.
Four days with little rest set the mightiest god on edge and Thor was scowling out into the moonlit filled yard across the street to a bank, to the apartments and shopping strip. He huffed a great sigh, turning the hilt of Mjolnir around and around in his palm before letting it spin back the two or three turns on the strap. Then again. Again. And again. He could not let Loki see their mother in such a state of disarray. She was ghastly, falling apart at the seams, her beautiful sage dress sagging and tattered behind her and that bronze armor she had last worn chipped, cracked.
Thor's jaw clenched as he remembered seeing her walking across the street looking so incredibly lost. His eyes looked a bit glossy, sad, and he seemed weighed down physically, emotionally.
