Abigail was scared out of her mind. She knew what her father wanted her to do, in order for her life to be spared. She didn't want to be any part of his dark plans and she always felt that on some level he knew that. And now, she had been separated from him. She had failed him in his search for a surrogate victim. She'd tried to reach him on the strange phone that she found. Instead she reached some woman who seemed to know her name and her story. That would only make things worse in her Dad's mind. He'd have to kill her now; there was no more escaping it. She began to wonder how he would end her life. Would he strangle her as he did his victims? Or would he have something worse planned? She began to frantically bang on the bakery door, hoping someone would let her in to use the bakery phone to call her Dad and beg for her life. That was the only option in her mind. Her father had her so brain washed that she wouldn't even think of calling someone like the police for help or defending herself in any way.

When there was no answer at the bakery door, Abigail slid to the ground and sat there, hugging her knees to her chest and sobbing.

"Not here." Abigail hated the dark. It reminded her of being in her room with her father whispering to her at night. She took a better look at Katherine and decided she looked different enough from herself to not attract the attention of her dad. Going with her might give Abigail enough time to think of what to say to her dad when he found her. And if she went to the house, maybe she could find a working phone. "Yes, your house. Let's go there."

"Great," she chirped. "Just follow me. It's not far." She started to walk and lead her away from the library. She wondered how best to start the conversation. She had not had many 'welcome to the island talks', especially not with people in as much distress as Abigail. "This must be very confusing for you. You are not in America anymore, Abigail. You aren't even on earth anymore. And actually, you've been here for a bit. It's just that this place loves messing with people and made you a couple of years younger." At least, that was her best guess.

Abigail walked with Katherine for a few steps and then stopped when she started talking. She folded her arms across her chest, and looked at the woman she'd been following. "Are you..um..on something?" She asked, nervously. Even though Abigail had been taught about drinking and drugs in a high school class and was allowed the occasional beer at her dad's cabin - she had never been allowed to attend parties and was unsure what someone who was drunk or high would act like. But, it was one way she could make sense of what Katherine was trying to explain to her.

Katherine's head snapped to the side and her expressions immediately broke into a grin. She couldn't help the chuckle that followed. "Tried it once, wasn't my thing," she chirped. "This place is real, sorry. I wish it wasn't but it is."

"Maybe I'm on something." Abigail muttered jokingly. Her Dad would never let try anything stronger than beer. It would taint the meat. "None of this can be real." She added, frowning again as she thought of her Dad and what she believed to be inevitable.

Katherine glanced at her from the side and tried to calm her with a smile. "I guess you will find out..." she said with a shrug. Only time was able to convince most normal humans that this wasn't actually their brain's idea of a joke.

"All I need to find out is where my Dad is." Abigail replied. "Do you have a working phone at your place? The phone I used before won't dial his number for some reason."

"No phone will, sorry," she said. Nevertheless, she pulled out her own. Her own phone looked quite different from the ones that were around in this time. It was a simple glass plate that sprang to life the moment she touched it. She unlocked it quickly enough and put the phone application onto the screen and passed it onto her. The interface hadn't changed much over the centuries. There were still numbers to type and telephone logo to press. "Here, you can give it a go if you want."

Abigail took the phone and punched in her father's number. She tried various combinations. His number, his number with the area code, his number with a one and the area code, the country calling code, etc. She felt so frustrated when nothing when through. "It's not working!"

"That's because you are not on earth anymore," she said. "But I can show you something that will work." She switched to her contact list and scrolled down to Abigail's own name. "Here, try calling that number."

Abigail looked at her name in the woman's phone and dialed it, causing the mysterious phone she had found earlier to ring. Her hands began to shake as she started to suspect this was some kind of trick. Someone had planted that other phone on her. Police or FBI, it didn't matter; her father had taught her to fear them all. They would lock her away for his crimes. She took a deep breath and managed to steady her hands. "Who do you work for?"

Katherine couldn't help but chuckle. "I honestly can say that I've never worked for anyone in my entire life." She crossed her arms and waited for Abigail to make up her mind.

"Oh, no?" Abigail asked, skeptically. Surely, the FBI could come up with a better cover story than never being employed, but she could still be a cop. "What do you do then?"

"I'm a photographer," she said with a shrug. It felt like she was slowly abandoning her former passion while she uncovered her heritage. She only went for picture hunting occasionally. Her training had become far more important.

"A photographer on mystery world." Abigail muttered, looking down at the phone she still held. "Taking pictures of the locals snipe hunting?" She tried the phone again. She had wanted to lighten her own mood, but as soon as she had said the word hunting, her thoughts went back to him. "I really need to find my Dad."

"You won't. He's not here," she said, trying to figure out how to make her point clear. Powers were always a good start but Abigail might just go back to her 'drugs' theory. What the hell - she didn't believe her anyway. "Okay, how about this... what if I tell you that magic exists?"

"He has to be here!" Abigail snapped. "You don't get it. I'm never alone. He never leaves me alone like this." She was close to panicking again and the mention of magic had her rolling her eyes. "I'd start to think you were out of your damn mind."

"No, I do get it, Abigail," she said, briefly switching her tactics. "You told me how he treated you. You are no animal. He doesn't deserve you." She wanted to tell her how she had a better family now but it would have no effect. The girl would not believe her.

Abigail shook her head. "Not an animal. But I am his. His obsession. His property." She was also his creation and his monster, but she couldn't tell anyone that.

Katherine swallowed. The poor soul - how was a monster like that even allowed to exist? The sweetest torture would be too gentle for that man. "Please, listen to me. You are not. You are no one's property. You are your own person. Your decisions are yours, not his and no one else's."

Abigail blinked rapidly, trying to hold back the tears. "I don't know how to be my own person." She whispered. It may have been the most honest thing she had said that night.

"Hey sweetie, it's okay," she said with a gentle voice. "You'll find out. It's the most beautiful thing." They turned another corner and she spotted her house with relief. Tea and biscuits usually made the world seem better to her. She hoped Abigail would feel same.

Abigail wasn't sure if she deserved beautiful things. Or if it was worth it to try. She'd been trained to be what other people wanted - her dad and his victims to lure them in. She gave a nod to Katherine to show she was listening. "Maybe."

She was silent for a few steps, just until they had reached the house. "Here, that's where my uncle and I live." She opened the huge front doors to reveal the entrance hall. Not all the antiques had stayed where they had found them. The place slowly started to become theirs but they had not changed the original character completely. Fotos - both her own and those of others - hung on the walls. "How about a cup of tea? Or a you a coffee person? I can make you a hot chocolate as well."

Abigail followed her inside and looked at all the photos on the wall. She paid attention to the ones of people and the expressions on the faces. They didn't seem as forced as the smiling, 'happy family' pictures that hung in her own home. She approved of that.

She glanced over at Katherine. She did like tea and coffee, but chocolate was a treat to her. "Could I have some hot chocolate? If it's not too much trouble?"

"Of course, you can," Katherine said. She went over to the fridge and got the milk can. "Would you like marshmallows as well? And can I interest you in something to eat?" she asked, wanting to bring a bit of normality into the girl's day.

"Okay, I'll check what I've got," Kat said as she said up a pot and filled it with milk. She switched on the gas stove to boil the milk. "What's your favourite meal?" she just wanted to keep the girl talking, make her feel more comfortable.

"Breakfast." Abigail replied. "Especially pancakes." It was one of her favourite things, perhaps because it didn't taste off as her father's meat dishes did. Fortunately, she hadn't yet discovered why her father's cooking tasted different and what he had been feeding to her and her mother. "I'll appreciate whatever you have." She added, not wanting to seem ungrateful.

Katherine cocked up an eyebrow. "Pancakes it is," she said with a wink at her and started to collect the ingredients. "You can stay here for the night," she told her as she stirred the milk. She had switched to full mothering mode like Holly had always done when she saw someone in distress. It felt weird.

"Oh yes," she said with a little laugh. With Thor in the house her father did not stand a chance. It was almost a pity that he would not show up. "My uncle is an expert fighter and I've got a gun upstairs." She cracked the eggs into a flour filled bowl and poured milk on top of the mix.

"That's good." Abigail said quietly. Her Dad was killer, but not a risk taker. He stalked his victims and went after them when they were alone. With a man in the house, they might be safe. She watched Kat work. "Is there an alarm?"

"Uhm," she said, stopping in her work to think. "Kinda." Her father kept track of the dangers around the house, at least that was her theory. If she screamed his name in despair, she was sure he would show up. But that was hardly something she could explain to the girl. "Really, you don't have to worry. Does your father own a gun?"

"He has a lot of guns." Abigail replied. "But I don't think he'd use them here." Guns were loud, even with a silencer. And there was the issue of getting them past security when he travelled. Guns were for hunting animals. He had other methods for killing people. She shivered at the thought of it and wrapped her arms around herself.
