Status: Unfinished

Kai was sitting on a rock at the shore - if you could even call it that - of the lake. He had started to move between the areas of water on the station. Wheel 5's lake had been expanded and Kai was glad for it. It was tempting to expand it more. But all the god knew was water and once released, it claimed what it was free to claim. He was too weak to bind it further and he doubted that he would want to. The ocean should be free as much as the creatures in it. The god - as so often - dived head first into a pit of longing. He wished the times of the seafarers still existed... back when he had still meant something to him. When all he had been responsible for was the ocean... Christianity had taken that from him. The prayers and the devotion was gone. He was needed by no one.

Self-pity permitted the god from noticing the small cat that approached him. It was too deep of a trap and gods were easy victims. Especially the old ones... Nandi had been better at adapting. She had embraced humanity's changes while Kai himself had moped. Still did. It was hard to change your ways when you had had them for so long.

"Is this the part of the park where we stare off into the water in a brooding manner?" The tuxedo cat asked, stopping at the edge of the water to stretch, first her front half and then her back. Of course, she couldn't just sit there after her stretch, the spell had included a red dotted bowtie and before her fuzzy bottom got too comfortable on the ground, one back leg came up and she scratched at the skin under the tie. "I've managed to lose most of my dignity at this point so I'm hoping that at least trying to look enigmatic might save me. Cats are supposed to look inscrutable, aren't they? I don't know how they do it."

She dropped down from her sitting pose to something closer to what was called a loaf, with her feet tucked up under her, and she sniffed lightly at the water. "Screw it, do you think anyone would mind if I murdered an obnoxious scouser and tossed him in there? He's skinny so it wouldn't be hard to weigh him down so he wouldn't float."

At first, Kai was not amused at choice of words. He felt he was being made fun of... the god did not like that. A second later he had Nandita's voice in his head, making fun of him for exactly the same reason. He sighed... it was a good reason.

His mood was further lightened at the next part of her speech. And then... there was the fact that it was a magical cat talking to him. The magic surrounding the feline was impossible to overlook. He was reminded of the times when some of his children had abandoned him and roamed through the forests of Aotearoa. Some simply had no appreciation for the true realm of life.

"You can be my guest... as long as they do not come back, I do not mind the dead." His voice was solemn and only a sparkle in his eyes betrayed his amusement. "If I might make the observation, you have picked a peculiar form to be in. Most would choose something more impressive. I personally would suggest the form of a dolphin or a shark."

"Oh believe me, if I had a choice in this, I'd just be myself. This whole cat thing is just my ex being an asshole." She admitted, the cat looking up at him with a lazy blink. She deserved something in revenge for the prank she'd played on him for his birthday but nothing so annoying as being made into an animal for the day though, or so she thought. The thing that really got her though was that he'd actually remembered her birthday, but John was ever surprising her. "Normally, I'm a magician, gifted too or so I like to think. The majority of my reviews are excellent, which is saying something as stage magic criticism can be rough since we're a smaller group than you'd think. I'm more accustomed to pulling rabbits from my hat," a hat that she had shaken off when she woke and found herself as a cat. "Or maybe turning others to animals, it's been a long time since it was my turn."

She sighed heavily, which was quite the thing to hear out of such a small cat. "He'd probably come back, he's got a talent for doing whatever would be most annoying at any given time."

Kai did not even try to piece together who this ex was. He was around on the station. That was all he knew. In his experience, mortals always had laments. Sometimes it was why someone else got a promotion, sometimes it was about the death of a loved one and sometimes it was about being turned into a cat by an ex. The last one was certainly one of the more unusual.

"Then why do not break your curse? You just need to pull the human out of the cat..." For him, that was the simple solution and he said it with utmost seriousness. He had many beings inside of him. He just needed to tug at them to appear and he could change form.

"Well, one, there's an image I'm not going to be able to get out of my head so thanks for that." She said, finding it difficult to frown in this form. "And as obnoxious as he is, he knows me too well to make this spell breakable by my magic. Most of my magic, I command it through logomancy, but every time I try to say a spell in this form it comes out forward instead of backward and nothing happens. It's not permanent, I figure once midnight comes I'll be myself again because he's playing with me and not actually being malicious. Doesn't really stop me from wanting to kill him a little though."

John was smart enough not to be anywhere near her when she was a furry ball of rage with sharp claws and teeth, but she was sure that somewhere he was feeling smug. If there was one thing she hated it was giving the already incredibly arrogant John Constantine a reason to be smug.

Kai nodded solemnly. Revenge was a popular sentiment back in the old days. "You will have plenty of opportunity to kill him a little tomorrow then..." The old god chuckled. "However, I notice that your way of creating magic is something unfamiliar to me. Is it the only way you perform it?" He had seen many different ways of tapping into the supernatural but none that could only create magic when speaking backwards.

"No." Zee admitted, "It is my primary method of focusing my magic though. It was how my father used his magic and how he taught me, but I can cast spells a variety of ways. It usually isn't a problem but I'm well known for it in my world so most people try to attack my voice if we're fighting. I can't tell you how often blood magic has saved my life after someone has tried to cut my throat. If I do certain spells often I don't have to say them aloud every time, like when I want to fly or control a particular element if I'm surrounded by it."

The cat blinked before looking back out over the water, "Yes, I can change my clothes with magical willpower alone but I'd need to say the spell for this as I don't transform myself all that often."

"Hmm..." Kai grumbled in understanding. It had the quality of the roaring sea. "The art of transformation is not a simple one. But there are many ways to do it. I can feel the magic within you. It is strong. Maybe you just need to try a different way to free yourself." He held out his hand to her. "Let me show you." Back when he had first existed, it had been a struggle to gain followers. He was the essence of the belief of others. When it was only a few who believed, one had to fight for every person. With travellers of the sea, it had been easy to make them believe. But there was no sea here. He needed to rely on different methods.

Zatanna never turned down the chance to learn new magic, most mages were the same, even those who weren't currently trapped as cats or other domestic animals. Of course, even as herself she would have been willing to take his hand, perhaps too confident in her own abilities to worry much about potential dangers from a man she didn't know. The cat got up, arching her back in a stretch before looking over his hand.

"Right, I don't have thumbs right now, or long enough fingers to take your hand, really so this is just gonna have to do for now." She reached out her little black and white paw and placed it on his palm. "I'm Zatanna Zatara."

Kai did not introduce himself verbally. What he showed her was something words would never be able to grasp. He let her see through his eyes. He let her see the trees and their essence within them. The small ones who were young and eager and aiming for a sky they would never reach. The tall ones was and their stoic presence, their roots stretching out under neath them, binding the place and providing a foundation for all that was around them. The glue and heart of every forest. Every plant, every animal, even the air was in a purer form. They were not just an object. Not just an animal. Not just a plant. That was not how the world existed for Kai. It was their mana that shown through. That gave them meaning and identity. Everything was connected. The animals that came from plants that they ate... the plants that had been nourished by the water. Yet, each shown in a unique way. The hare that embodied swiftness and alertness and softly edged to the calm water.

Then there was the young woman herself. A bright presence of confidence and intellect. A woman, not a cat. Her mana stretching out towards the world to connect her essence to that of the others and interact with it through her magic. But it was a twisted connection. A one way road, not an exchange. Unlike Kai's presence. His mana was firmly connected to the lake he sat in front. Parts of him were everywhere and parts of everything else rested within him. It was clear he was no human. All he was was mana. He was not a bright presence like he used to be. It was an old presence. One which had risen to shine as bright as the sun, only to slowly die as the faith around him died. Now, it flickered in its struggle against death. Every organic form was given by himself. It was how he chose to represent himself but it was not who he was. Kai gave her that knowledge. It was part of his world.

"I have been called many names. Now I go by Kai." Ocean. "You see, Zatanna. You have never stopped being a human. When you truly know that, no one can take it from you. Knowing your identity and where you came from is your biggest power. It is your biggest weapon."

It felt a little like when she would brush up against the Green, when Swamp Thing had wanted to impart his wisdom and he'd touched her mind in order to do so. She had been somewhat prepared but it was still a bit of a shock for her, especially as that had been feeling the network of living things on earth whereas this was all seemingly just him. It was something like comparing static electricity to jamming her fingers into an electric socket, it was still a jolt the difference was just magnitude.

"You're a god." She finally said when she put the images in her head together, remembering that gods had been on the list of those residing on the station. She'd met a few before, one of the benefits or perhaps hazards of being one of the most visible faces of Earth's magical community. They'd mostly tried to announce themselves with words and occasional miracles, though given that she could alter reality and realign the cosmos with a few backward words, they had a hard time impressing her. But Kai didn't seem interested in showing off for the sake of his own ego and she appreciated that. No wonder John had placed his ley lines so close to the water, it was for Kai's sake.

The cat sighed again and shut her eyes, letting herself dip into thoughts of her identity and her bloodline. Arion, the immortal demigod of Atlantis, di Vinci, Nostradamus, Cagliostro, Flamel, Fulcanelli, her father Giovanni Zatana, her mother, countless more incredibly powerful mages that had imparted their strength through the blood that flowed through her veins. And there was her own power, her own strength, the things she'd been able to accomplish and the lives she'd saved. She wasn't sure when or how it happened but upon letting the magic flow through her the paw on his hand became a warm hand and in the next moment she was herself again. Sure, she was sitting on the ground in a thin, black silky nightie, but she was very much herself.

Kai could feel the jolt of magic and its incredible power rush through the mage. He would have shared the little he had to give but it was not upon him. Changing herself back to her true form was only something she could achieve without breaking the curse. She had done so with ease.

The god bubbled with laughter and it roared like the ocean. It was a sound of pure joy. Not many saw the world how he saw it and that she had tapped into it with ease warmed his heart. The lack of clothing was nothing that distracted him. It had been the white man that were obsessed with hiding their skin. Kai had never understood it.

"You have great skill and ancient roots. I am glad you have an open mind to accompany it," he hummed. "Not many with your potential can learn as quickly." He gave a silent nod of respect. There was a twinkle of mirth in the so often solemn god. "I am glad you managed pull the human out of the cat. Your form is not one that should be hidden under fur." While he was no human, it lay in his nature to feel connected to them and to seek out their form. He had had consorts of many forms and appreciated the female body in its great beauty. It also made him miss his wife. Kai rumbled a sigh.

She looked down over herself, taking her hand from his so she could run her hands down her arms and assure herself that she hadn't just put up a projection of herself. She didn't do anything about her clothing for the moment, she was covered and comfortable, and maybe more than a little relieved that she hadn't decided to sleep naked the night before. "Magic has been my whole life," she admitted with a little shrug, smiling at his laughter and his reaction. "I wasn't raised among my people but I have tried to live my life the way they do, living a life that is open to knowledge and magic. But it doesn't always go this easily, I've punched a few holes in the fabric of reality more than once on certain spells, let's say you've guided me well."

She tucked some of her dark hair behind her ear, "And thank you for that, I am incredibly grateful, now just showing me a new way to come at the problem but for everything you showed me. Would it be alright if I asked you a few questions? I'll try not to be too invasive."

The god listened and at her final question he chuckled softly. The life she had described, even in this brief glimpse, told him of her strength and determination. "Of course. Ask away, if you are not offended if I refuse to answer." He chuckled again. Everyone who believed in what he was doing gave him strength. But for the god, it was more than that. He missed the times of power, where he could shatter the world under waves and decide the path his people would take. But mostly, he just missed having a people to guide. Here, even the Dead did not need him. Kai had always tried to be good to the ones who prayed to him. He had let them to shores of promise where new civilisations had been founded. The ones, who had abandoned him throughout their journey however, had never reached new lands.

"Your power, you make me look like a middle school magician on talent night in comparison, you could be the unchallenged Lord of this station and the people who live here or on any number of the worlds beyond. Yet here you are, hanging out by the water, helping a woman remind herself that she's too strong get caught in a form that isn't her own if she doesn't want it to be. I guess I'm wondering why." It sounded like an easy question but that didn't mean it was.

"With the magical community, there is always a reason. John lets himself be led around by luck for atonement, and because deep down he really just wants to help people. Faust holes himself up studying magic then tries to destroy his betters for the sake of power. I try to help people and I fight for them because I need to know that my life is still worth the sacrifices my parents made. You're a god though, and maybe I'm just used to Christianity breathing down my throat, but don't gods want as much faith as they can get from humanity?"

Kai hummed a another deep rumble as the mage spoke. Her words spoke of wisdom and learning. Her question of the openness to accept more than just her truth. Many in the 21st century where he had come from were not as open anymore.

"I cannot deny that faith is important to me. It is. A god is nothing without its followers. For this, my power is weak. I could help you because you were open to my ways. I do not have the strength to fight against those who think I am wrong. A long time ago my people had given me that strength but now, here... only a handful believe in me. I am the God of the Ocean and all I have is this." There was a pain in his soft tone as he gestured to the lake in front of him. "My reach has been cut short but it has been happening for centuries. The Christian God is a cruel one." He was too proud and stubborn to acknowledge that even the Christian God might change. "My People, we are about respect. We are warriors but what we fight for his survival and respect. We do not aim to put others down. I am me, you are you. We are all part of life and everyone plays their own role. We all have a place and a purpose. I have learned many great things from mortals and they have learned many great things from me. My life - it was a good one. There were squabbles between the gods but we respected each other. I had my place among my people and my fellow pantheon. Mind you, some of them were dicks." He chuckled at his own choice of modern words. There had been fights between the gods. But there had been a balance. We might not see eye to eye but we could talk to one another like equals." His voice changed to a grumble as his mood darkened at the memories brought by his past. "The Christian God, he changed that. Christianity oppressed whatever they found. Our people were punished for worshipping us. Often when human faith changes, a god can adapt to it. They might attribute a new role to you or give you a new name but it is still you and you will be a new version of yourself. But Christianity did not allow it. It was them and nothing else. That is not me. To grow my power here in such a way, I would lose myself in the process. I could become the God of Terror and if you do not obey me, I will strike you down. But what you would believe in would not be Kanaloa, nor Tangaroa or Tagaloa. If I tap into that belief, I would change and all I am would be lost. I would die either way. I do not know how the Christian god started out but I heard rumours that he was a weaker god within a dying pantheon who noticed the strength of Jewish ideologies and hoped to create a new life for himself through oppression." The last part he had added out of conviction. Christianity was the thorne in his eyes. "No, I prefer to be a weak version of myself than no version of it at all. It is what I always stood for and while I have changed, I have never truly lost myself." He had always been a man of the ocean. Only now there was no ocean left.

"You'll have to forgive me for being surprised, but of all the gods I've known I've never been struck by the sense that their integrity, in any sense of the word, was all that important to them. You would be the first. It's refreshing," She paused to consider the word she'd chosen, making her smile in a way that suggested she didn't quite approve of the joke. It was bad enough to make even John's eyes roll. "I'm sorry, calling an oceanic god refreshing, that was terrible. Also, unintentional, I try to be better about wordplay when I'm actually trying."

She cleared her throat then shrugged, offering him a proper smile. "Anyway, I admire that, doing things on your own terms. It took me a long time to let myself live like that, maybe it doesn't save me from losing myself little by little, but it means a lot that it is my own choice."

Kai laughed at the unintentional pun and the apology that followed. Maybe he laughed a little a little too hard. He hadn't laughed much in recent times. It felt good. It made him feel a little bit brighter.

"Thank you." He chuckled again. "I did have a long time to come to this realisation. Hmm." It was a grumbling. "Your long time is only a crumb for me. You mortals are often many steps ahead of us old gods. We are set in our ways." He certainly was by now. Change was not something he wanted anymore. That's why he struggled so much with this place.

Zee shrugged, "When you have so little time you end up having to sprint towards self-actualization. Most people don't make it but sometimes we get lucky. I got very, very lucky." She admitted

"I wouldn't have guessed that for someone so closely tied with water you would be set at all. Water is the element of change, isn't it? But after living for so long it probably isn't even really change for you, is it? At least in my universe, everything came in cycles, like the tides though not everyone lived long enough to really see it. In my great grandfather's grimoire, he wrote something like: the universe moves in a constant waltz that has gone on for so long that only the divine can see past the seemingly random chaos of life to the steps and know where they might end. Paraphrasing, he didn't think our few hundreds or a thousand-year lifespan was near long enough, that we should shoot for immortality. He might have had something if he hadn't been the sort to surround himself with mercury."
