It had been a very normal evening. Ashley had been working late, but Jane had appeared with dinner, and then Robert had appeared even though he was meant to be away through the latest door with some friends. He'd claimed that Amsterdam was 'boring', but Jane had given her father a knowing look. Robert had secretly missed them, but he wasn't about to admit to it. He was a boy who liked to act like he was very worldly and independent, but Darcy knew that he was more of a family man than he let on.

They'd ate, Robert had regaled them with the more palatable stories of his vacation, and they'd had a rather heated game of scrabble that had involved calling Aunt Georgiana to make sure their father wasn't "making up regency words again".

Eventually they'd retired for the evening, and Darcy had read a couple of chapters of a novel before he fell asleep. At some point in the night, he rolled over and felt the warmth of his wife next to him. She'd obviously finished her shift and just slipped quietly into bed. Instinctively, he curled up against her, wrapping an arm around her waist and just letting her curls tickle at his nose.

There were many questions that Darcy thought she might have for him, but that hadn't been one of them. It took him so by surprise that he burst out laughing, feeling himself suddenly burning bright red.

"Ashley! Oh, trust you to have that as your first question. You've got your priorities straight," he teased her. Once he'd composed himself, he did answer, smiling at the young woman before him before just saying: "wonderful".

	She really did love to make him blush. She laughed along with him and then snuggled in again. "Good. I never want to be one of those boring old couples that never has sex or does anything fun." She held him a little closer. "How many kids do we have?" She wasn't going to ask about their names. She didn't want to risk changing that. (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

“Oh, we are definitely not that. We have a lot of fun still,” he assured her, just relaxing into her embrace now. It very quickly felt easy and normal again.

He was a little nervous about questions involving the kids, but he supposed a few details would not do any harm. “We have two, a boy and a girl,” he answered. Well, a man and a woman now, he supposed.

	"Good." Ashley nodded. She wanted to ask if they were still happy but it seemed ridiculous with the way he was holding her. And the question he already answered. "Are the twins or no? You don't have to tell me how far apart if they're not. I'm just curious." With the way twins ran in her family she wouldn't be surprised. (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

Darcy shook his head a little at the next question. “Not twins, no.” They might as well have been, given how close in age they were, but he didn’t tell her that part. “I won’t say who’s older, don’t want to ruin the surprise,” he told her. It had been a truly beautiful moment when they’d found out about Robert being Robert, she deserved to live it first hand.

	Ashley hadn't realized she tensed up while waiting for his answer until she relaxed. She was actually scared of the idea of having twins. "Okay, good." She smiled. Darcy felt her body relax at his answer, and he gently ran a hand up and down her back in a reassuring manner. He hadn’t realised she was worried about it.

“You don’t have to ask them,” he reminded her. “I don’t think... I don’t have anything bad to tell you really. We’re very happy, we have a wonderful, close family, there’s... no, I don’t have any bad news.”

	Ashley rested her head on his chest and smiled a little. "That's good. That's very good." She started to draw little circles on his back. Part of her wanted to ask if she ever patched things up with her mom but she didn't really want to know the answer. "I know that things aren't completely perfect, but that's just part of life. 	Her gentle attention to his back felt wonderful. It was amazing, really, that he could wake up thirty years in the past and Ashley was still there to make it feel like home. “Yes, we truly are. 	Her return kiss was very sweet, and he felt himself blush the tiniest bit under her attention. He was so glad that she was taking it well, but then he'd never really expected anything different of her. "I've had a lot of practise," he told her softly. "I'm glad I've not lost my touch. 	"Very rarely," he answered, without having to think too much on it. "And you sometimes work nights, although we usually get a hug in the hour or so between you coming to bed and me waking up properly," he explained, and then remembered. 	"Oh, an embarrassingly long time," he chuckled softly. "I had to try really hard not to be pouty about it, so as not to make you feel guilty," he explained. "I'm very lucky that you think so," he admitted, laughing a little with her.

He bit his bottom lip for a moment, wondering how much to tell her. The truth was, he could probably grab his phone and show her some photographs... unless it was his past self's phone now. That was probably for the best.

"Georgie was right about the curls," he offered after a moment. A little detail, but nothing too revealing.

	As she settled against his chest, he absent-mindedly started playing with her curls. It was just something that he always did, and it felt like the most natural thing in the world. "Oh yes, very. 	"Oh that's wonderful." She grinned. "I bet she's a wonderful mom." She hugged him a little tighter. It was nice to hear that things worked out for her as well. "I'm...." She took a deep breath. “Yes, she’s very dedicated. And you’re a wonderful aunt,” he told her. “When they were younger we used to alternate babysitting so we could have date nights.”

At her next question, he hesitated a little. He didn’t want to hurt her, to destroy her hope of her siblings returning completely. He could see in her expression that she was waiting for it like a slap to the face. He gently touched her cheek. “Spoilers,” he said softly, deciding not to hurt her. These things changed all the time.

	He was glad that she understood. It was adorable how affectionate she was being, and if he’d ever had any doubt about how much she loved him, her reactions to him now would’ve told him everything he needed to know.
