There were a large number of tubs of icecream put out on just about every flat surface available with a spell to keep them cold. Coffee and tea ready and remaining warm. Cold drinks stuffed in the fridge. Onesies sorted by size at the door, for people who didn't have one.

	The hand on her back was reassuring and she was thankful for it. "That sounds kind of boring." She made a face. Once she had her bowl made up, Ashley took a spoonful and held it up to him. "Try this one. It's one of my favorites." It was chocolate ice cream with brownie batter and fudge swirled throughout, as well as little pieces of chocolate. (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

Considering everything that had happened between them so far, it was utterly ridiculous that Darcy was suddenly confused about spoon sharing protocol. Was she attempting to feed him, or was he meant to take the spoon from her? Were people looking at them? Dear God, they were grieving, they weren't watching him and trying to judge his spoon-based etiquette. He'd been silent for too long now, it was weird. Was he scowling again?

"Sorry. I'm- um-" he shook his head to try and shake away the stupid anxiety. "I'll make a bowl," he decided, hoping to god that she wouldn't be offended.

	Ashley just shrugged and put the spoonful in her mouth. He'd had his tongue in her mouth recently, a little spoon sharing wasn't much different. But he was still learning. "I recommend the coffee flavor." She smiled. (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

It was definitely a good sign that she didn’t seem fazed by his slightly odd hang-ups, and he quickly relaxed again about it.

“There is a real obsession with coffee everything nowadays,” he observed. He was always being offered a coffee or something coffee related. “Mind you, I suppose tea flavoured would be rather unappealing,” he considered, just babbling a little to try and distract her since he’d had to remove his physical contact to dish up a bowl.

Darcy quirked an eyebrow at this strange revelation, and paused before speaking. Either she was mocking him, or it meant something different now, or people now liked their ice cream to come with side effects. And chocolate everything? How?

Oh, God, why did he keep scowling? This time it was purely confusion.

	"You don't have to do that." She gave him a kiss on the cheek, then wiped away the little bit of chocolate she left there. "I don't mind explaining things." 	“I know you don’t, but I can store up a mental list for a better time. It’s nothing important, it’s entirely ice cream related,” he told her. 	When she got to the chair she motioned for him to sit down first. It was just barely big enough for two adults, after all. "Ice cream related questions can definitely wait." She nodded. Darcy sat down as he was instructed, still feeling completely odd in the onesie, but from looking around he would have looked more out of place in his normal clothes.

“That would be a very thick notebook,” he admitted. “I’ll have to try to spread the questions around or I’ll drive you completely insane before long,” he told her, nodding for her to join him on the chair.

“Well, I should hope not. That would make for a very unhappy marriage,” he whispered to her. “And I plan on making sure you’re very, very happy,” he assured her equally quietly.

There was a little niggle of concern, though he would not say it and risk upsetting her further. He wondered how common this was, and he got the impression it was a regular occurrence. Regular enough for the family to have established a tradition. Then there was the real possibility of her being taken back to her own time, or he might have to leave her unexpectedly and without warning. He hadn’t realised it was quite like that - it was hard to ignore at that exact moment though.

"I doubt I will ever be unhappy with you." She gave him a quick kiss on the lips. "Maybe occasionally a little annoyed but never unhappy." She ate a little bit more of her ice cream but found she wasn't as in the mood for it as she thought. Instead she just stirred it around in her bowl. Things started coming to the surface again and she knew she was once again on the verge of tears.

"Ask me something completely ridiculous." Her voice shook a little.

“Only occasionally annoyed? Well, that’s very generous of you,” he said with a teasing smile. Oh, he knew he was stubborn and pricklish and disagreeable quite often, but he was also trying to be less so.

“Erm-“ He went from having hundreds of questions to have a totally mind blank, and the only thing he could think to ask was a more recent question. “Is green tea not kind of like opium?”

	Every little laugh or distraction was a victory at this point. He knew that it was healthy to grieve, but he also didn’t want her to feel lost and powerless to it. “Oh, I see!” he chuckled a little, feeling himself blush a little at his own silly question. “I knew you called it comfort food, but the addition of narcotics seemed a little extreme.” (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

Ashley shook her head. "The closest we get to narcotics in this house is alcohol. Which Aunt Sarah has completely cleared out of the house understandably." She sounded only slight disappointed. She did love pouring Irish cream over her ice cream sometimes. Ashley set her bowl on a nearby table and snuggled into his side a bit.

"There was actually a study that showed that hugging can have similar effects to some narcotics." She smiled a little. It was nice to know you could get high off a hug.

Darcy gave an almost uncertain nod. His natural instinct would have told him to offer someone in this situation a drink for their nerves. But perhaps that was it - leaving it at one was difficult for some when emotions were high.

“I’m inclined to believe that,” he nodded, putting down his bowl as well so that he could wrap her up in a proper hug. “I think you have shown me more affection over these past few weeks than I’ve experienced in my life. Certainly more hugs,” he told her softly. It had taken him a little time to get used to the idea, and he had no doubt that there were always going to be some things that were just too much for him, at least publicly.

	“Really? Well, that’s good,” he said softly. He wasn’t so sure - he still felt stiff and awkward, particularly as there were other people in the room. But it seemed to be the norm, the chosen mode of offering comfort. He fell silent with her, just letting her rest against his chest as he absent-mindedly played with her curls. 	He smiled a little at the kiss; it really was strange being so affectionate in front of her family, but he wanted her to feel better. If his physical closeness helped, then that was what he would do. "I love you, too," he told her. And he really did - he hoped his actions were showing that much, at least. 	There was something that Darcy felt a little regret about, too. He felt rather disappointed that he hadn't met her father while he'd had the chance. He did rather think it was entirely possible that her father would have hated his guts, but he highly doubted that was a reassuring or kind thing to say. Ashley closed her eyes again as she thought about him. "He was nice. Served as a Marine. He was actually sent back to about the same time that Bobby was but they were on opposite sides of the world." She shifted a little. It was still strange to her that they were on Earth at the same time and didn't know it.

"He was strict but fair. And he loved playing with us. Especially hide and seek." She sniffled. "I was so horrible at hiding but he would always pretend like he couldn't find me." She held him a little tighter. "I was never afraid of him but always respected him."
