Who: Spidermen (Peter and Miguel)
What: SCIENCE (holoprojectors etc) and possible Feels
Where: Pete's Apartment
When: Saturday morning, 30th June (Morning after these texts.)

Miguel headed round to Peter's apartment, carrying a small bag of baked goods in one hand and a holoprojector in the other. It seemed a lot easier for him to go round there when all he needed was the little holoprojector and his watch, while he didn't know what equipment Peter would need.

"I hope he likes my baking," Lyla said, not bothering to manifest while Miguel was walking.

"Why wouldn't he like your baking? The only time it's ever gone wrong before was when the oven malfunctioned and that was hardly your fault," Miguel pointed out, hoping to reassure his AI before they reached their destination.

"That is true, but this is still a new recipe."

"You've tried new recipes before and they've been good," he said, before smiling very slightly. "Didn't I eat one of your croissants?"

"Yes, bu-"

"Did I say it was nice or horrible?"

"You said it was good, and your biometrics did not indicate that you were telling a lie."

"Because I wasn't. If he doesn't like croissants, it won't be because of these, okay? It'll be because he doesn't like any croissants." Miguel gave a slight nod as he finished speaking, as if his point was the final say on something he didn't think needed to be discussed anyway. But Lyla said nothing, which was very unlike her.

"Lyla? Is something bothering you?" Miguel frowned as he asked. Lyla was never usually so unsure about things.

"No, I am fine. I ran a diagnostic last night. All is as it should be."

"Okay, good. Do you want to manifest now? We're at Peter's," he said, and knocked on the door just as Lyla appeared beside his wrist.

"Huh. Three versions, but only two are human? So... he wasn't born looking like a giant blue praying mantis?" he asked, feeling weirded out that he might just change species one morning, involuntarily.

Peter turned back towards Lyla, amazed at how short a time it had taken her. It was amazing just seeing half of a render in 3D of his family again, even though things were out of place and some stuff wasn't right. None of that mattered. "I uh... it's pretty good for a first try, though," he said, trying not to sound choked. "My Dad was a little taller than that compared to my mom. Maybe another couple inches?"

Miguel was ...not great with emotions a lot of the time, his or other people's. It was different with Sarah because, well, it just was. But most of the time, he didn't know what to do or he felt awkward, or most often, he ignored them (especially when they were his). But he wasn't the massive bithead people back home often made him out to be, especially now that Spider-man was involved. So while Lyla asked questions and adjusted her work, Miguel stayed quiet and watched Peter.

"Are you okay?" he asked quietly, once Lyla had gone back to work, incorporating all her new changes.

Peter couldn't tear himself away from the image for the longest time; it was really hitting home now that he was far away from Queens, away from his only family. He didn't like being alone but he was almost an adult now, and a superhero. It wasn't like he needed a father substitute. He just missed his family. Had done for years, only now it was Aunt May too.

"I'm fine," Peter replied, rubbing the back of his head. "You want something to drink? I got Kool-aid."

"I have no idea what that is, beyond a drink." Miguel said nothing else, which was fine because Lyla was quick at her work and she was speaking again.

"Peter, please tell me how this second version looks," she asked, before playing her corrected version. "I estimate that I have completed 73.2841% of the render at this time." It was a lot smoother to watch, with only a few obviously-blurry parts. She had obviously concentrated on the main figures in the video, since the background was clearly in need of sharpening up.

"Just a drink, yeah, kinda like fruit," he said, going to the refrigerator and taking out a gallon jug. "You want some?" he asked, reaching for a glass from the draining rack and pouring himself a half glass full.

Peter wasn't sure how much longer he'd be able to look at the rendering without breaking apart. Little by little, the thought of seeing it done was both exciting and terrifying. He'd lost them so long ago that the idea of seeing his parents in 3D was foreign. He was pretty messed up, for a teenage superhero.

He made himself look over at the rendering and swallowed. "Pretty great. That's super close to perfect, at least to my memory of them all. I think my Mom had a scar on her arm, right about here," he pointed on his own upper arm. "She got it was I was really small, I'd let go of my helium balloon and she tried to grab it before it got too high in the mall and scraped her arm on a nail or something."

"I'm good, thanks," Miguel said, and watched as a small scar appeared on one of the women in the holo. He kept glancing over at Peter, though.

"I will make my adjustments and complete the render of the background image. Miguel, I will need to stop all holographic projections in order to complete this work," Lyla said, and the images vanished again along with the holographic clothes that covered Miguel's spider-suit.

"Thanks, Lyla," he replied after the fact, only rolling his eyes very slightly before firing a webline up at the ceiling so he could hang upside down from it. He often thought better that way - hopefully Sarah had stopped being startled by finding him reading papers like that in the lab by now - and it was also just really comfy.

"Are you sure you're fine?" he asked after a couple of seconds, "Because... I don't think you are."

Peter swallowed again as the scar appeared; he remembered that day. He must have only been about four or five, obsessed with the balloon, tugging on the cord repeatedly until it snapped around his fist and floated away. His mom hadn't even stopped to think about letting it go, just jumped up, grabbed it and scratched her arm up. His father had called her crazy.

He needed to stop living in the past, in his old memories. The point of this was to get them out, to give himself something tangible. Peter drank down his drink in one and watched as Miguel's clothes fell away from him, leaving just his suit underneath. "Neat trick, makes getting dressed in the morning super easy, huh?" he said, trying to lighten the mood.

And then he had a human spider dangling from his ceiling. Dude could have at least asked before webbing up his paintwork. Not that he'd been the one to paint it. "I'm wondering what you're doing hanging upside down from the plasterwork, that's what I am..."

"I'm thinking," Miguel replied, as if it should have been obvious. "I do some of my best thinking when I'm upside down. It's very relaxing."

"Peter, I am at 75%," Lyla interrupted, although she didn't manifest.

"Besides, this way, I don't have to walk on or through your laundry," Miguel added with a small smile.

"All that does is give me a headache if I do it too long. I think you're probably more spider than I am, man..." he smiled, leaning back against the counter. He had been so jealous of Miguel's powers and his talent because it seemed so effortless.

Peter glanced down at the floor, rubbing the back of his head. "Yeah I'm not... great at that. I'm still getting used to the whole single white male alone on the space station thing. Everybody has that, right?"

"I guess? I mean, I stopped living with my parents when I went to boarding school, so I had this phase while I was there," Miguel explained, gesturing at the laundry-bergs as he spoke. "But that's what I'm thinking about. I have a spare bedroom. I was planning to use it as a work-room when I first arrived here, but there's so much lab-space in the college area that I don't need a work-room. It's yours, if you want?"

Lyla chose that moment to join in as well. "I would advise you to accept the offer, Peter, because I do a lot of baking and Miguel and Sarah do not eat all of the baked goods I create."

"Lyla! This is Peter's decision, not yours," he said, scowling very slightly at his watch before looking back at Peter. "She's right, though. She bakes a lot."

Boarding school? Where he was from, only the rich kids went to boarding school. Maybe it was different in the future, maybe it was more common to send your kids off to get that kind of environment or whatever. But the offer was interesting. Peter didn’t love the idea of being pitied or guilting anyone into offering him a room. But he kinda sucked at adulting too, apparently.

“I couldn’t let you do that, I’m fine on my own,” he replied eventually, looking down. “It’s just a few piles of clothes, not a fire or anything. Not that anything’s caught fire here, no…”

He didn’t know Sarah either, he couldn’t just put a stranger out just because Miguel had been nice enough to offer something like that. If Lyla meant that Sarah lived there too.

“I’m sure your baked stuff’s great, Lyla, but I’m good.”

"Render is 80% complete."

"Thanks, Lyla," Miguel said as he turned round on the web so he was the right way up now. "You wouldn't be in the way, I promise. The room is empty other than the furniture that was already in it, and Sarah has her own place; I stay over at hers, since she has kids. I have no problem with webbing, clearly, and I know how to fix blocked drains and deal with potential fires." Was that all Peter's objections? He thought so.

"You're the only person I'm going to offer the room to, so even if you don't accept now, it'll be there if you want it later. Okay?"

80% already? Peter wasn’t sure if he was ready to walk into turmoil again; it was way too painful, wasn’t it? The video sure had been at times, and he cried like a kid every time he saw them on a fuzzy picture. If he had a 3D model, would he lose his shit in front of Miguel? In front of his AI?

“I don’t… you don’t have to ask cos you feel sorry for me or something,” Peter mumbled, looking down at the floor. “Home’s not ever gonna be here for me. Home’s always gonna be Queens, you know?” He was such a disaster of a human being, wasn’t he? Childlike, vulnerable, soft in the weak places. “I appreciate it, I do, but I don’t… I don’t like pity.”

Huh? Miguel flipped down from his webline and managed to land beside Peter.

"I don't like pity either, don't worry. And believe me, you don't make me feel sorry for you. I mean, I get that you're upset right now, but that's entirely different." Miguel put his hand on Peter's shoulder as he spoke. "I'm offering you the room for all kinds of reasons. I like you, you're funny, you're insanely smart and I want to learn as much as I can from you, like how I learn from Sarah."

"You eat my bak-"

"Yeah, we got it, Lyla, thank you," Miguel interrupted. "The point is, Peter, I'm asking because I want to, not because I think you're a charity case or anything like that."

He even landed with more grace than Peter did. He really needed to work on his skills.

“I don’t?” he asked sceptically in reply. “I’m a literal orphan. I’ve been seeing people’s pity on their faces for me for years, and I’m kinda done with it. It makes me feel young and helpless when I’m not. I don’t want to end up seeing that on your face too, Miguel.”

Peter rubbed the back of his head slightly, tired at having to fake being fine all the time. “I’m just a dumb kid, aren’t I? I’d love to be your roommate, I just… don’t want it to end up with you regretting it because you felt sorry for me.”

He couldn’t help but laugh at Lyla, a genuine chuckle escaping his lips. “Do I have to clean my room?”

"I'm not going to regret it. And keeping your room tidy would be cool," Miguel said with a smile. "The only rules I'm going to try and enforce are keeping the living room and kitchen tidy, and keeping the lights dimmed if I'm in."

He took his glasses off and let Peter see his bright red eyes. "My eyes are really sensitive to light, and I can see in the dark. But that means light like this hurts, and could even blind me for a while." His glasses went back on, pretty quickly, and he blinked to clear the colored spots that had started to form. "So if the lights are dimmed, I don't get a massive headache."

Peter still somehow had a sinking feeling about this, that it would end up in disaster and arguments. He was a teenager after all, and it wasn’t like he was a properly functioning adulty teenager; he was a giant heaping mess. “I can try on the first one,” he counted off on his fingers, “And I will definitely try on the second one but I will almost always remember the third. Promise.”

His own eyes bugged at the sight of Miguel’s bright red eyes. He kinda looked like Satan in a weird way and made Peter want to hiss and throw holy water at him. But just a little. “How the heck do you function with eyes like those, dude? I mean, super scary and intimidating but impractical for day-to-day humaning.”
