I was talking to Nico about making this playlist a while ago and it took me so long because it sort of turned into a monstrosity and then became two playlists! So here's the first part: Gothucation.

Before I slam you with music, I want to address the immortal (pun intended) question of "What is Goth?" Bauhaus is considered the first band in the genre, but the first band to be called goth is Siouxsie and the Banshees, who were labeled as such by Rolling Stone in 1978. The overall style, in terms of fashion, was largely inspired by a poster of Siouxsie Sioux and The Cure's Robert Smith and was a response to the "death" of glam rock.

Goth is generally considered an aesthetic or a quality more than a specific sound. There are a number of different sub-genres within goth from industrial goth to bubble goth. There are sad goths, Victorian goths, perky goths, and pastel goths. It's a whole wide world. But there's one thing we can all agree on: Ville Valo is hot.

But before I yadda yadda about Victorians and tuberculosis for six pages, here's the music...

Nope. Don't think so.

I've been in a mood the last week and it was cathartic. And then Iron Bro had to ruin it.

Is that it? I thought it might be the side effect of a particularly good black manicure.

I gotta give you props, you do a really good two-tone. The matte is still matte and the shiny is still shiny. Even after two days of popcorn-induced torture. But nope. Pure catharsis. I spent three hours just laying in the middle of my bed chilling to Dead Can Dance last night and it was bliss.

You’d be shocked what pinterest can teach you after a few painkillers. If you grow them out a bit, we can try the Louboutin tips next.

Seems like a good way to fall asleep.

OH! With the red underneath? I'm in!

I fell asleep to the AFI - Sing the Sorrow album like I used to do in middle school. Super nostalgic.

Those are the ones. Louboutin put out red polish just for that and it looks fantastic.

Middle school? What was that? Last year? As long as it helps you sleep.

Is that the one with the sharp pointy top? OH. But that reminds me. Does Louboutin make an ankle boot? Or do I keep seeing red-bottom knock offs?

Weirdly, it does.

They do have a stilleto top which makes them more attractive on a counter than your typical nail polish.

They do. The 120mm Pigalle is their most iconic shoe, but there’s a whole design house that isn’t going to be wasted on remaking it in different heights. Who even wears the 85 mm? Ugly girls. That’s who.

They have a fairly good selection of women’s boots, though their men’s designs are a bit limited. Personally, I like the So Kate booty but you strike me as more of a Marchacroche type.

I like the thought of makeup I could theoretically kill someone with.

And while I do like the Marchacroche line, I just looked at the site (I'm an idiot) and I think it's either the Eloise or the Delicotte that I keep seeing. I like those lines.

Packaging design is more important than most people make it out to be. Why pay for something ugly?

You’d break your ankle on a stiletto, child. Those aren’t bad. I like a pointed toe; it elongates the leg.

I usually lean towards minimalism in packaging but can't beat something stabby.

True that. Looks like I know what I'm saving up for after I buy books for school. I need some shoes that don't look like I kick faces in for a living. Y'know, cause I'm totally retired from face-kicking.
