I was talking to Nico about making this playlist a while ago and it took me so long because it sort of turned into a monstrosity and then became two playlists! So here's the first part: Gothucation.

Before I slam you with music, I want to address the immortal (pun intended) question of "What is Goth?" Bauhaus is considered the first band in the genre, but the first band to be called goth is Siouxsie and the Banshees, who were labeled as such by Rolling Stone in 1978. The overall style, in terms of fashion, was largely inspired by a poster of Siouxsie Sioux and The Cure's Robert Smith and was a response to the "death" of glam rock.

Goth is generally considered an aesthetic or a quality more than a specific sound. There are a number of different sub-genres within goth from industrial goth to bubble goth. There are sad goths, Victorian goths, perky goths, and pastel goths. It's a whole wide world. But there's one thing we can all agree on: Ville Valo is hot.

But before I yadda yadda about Victorians and tuberculosis for six pages, here's the music...

I totally forgot the Visigoths, you're right.

And you're very welcome. I had a great time making it for you.

wait is there an actual band by that name?

whats the thought process behind making a playlist? i remember talking about songs & playlists & making them but the leprechaun kind of zapped my energy so i dont remember if we talked about more than playlists in general.

Actually, yeah. They're metal. Surprisingly not terrible.

It definitely started with the leprechaun. I think that's where The Killing Moon came from? I know I had that on there for a while. And then I asked what everyone's favorite songs were! And that's where I pulled Voltaire and MCR from. Then I decided if I was going to make something that everyone could enjoy I needed to get the genre staples in there for history. You know - laying the tracks of where it's been. And a couple deep-cuts just for fun.

I don’t understand the public song lists lately. If it is for a certain person, isn’t it more intimate to share personally? I assume things like this might make others feel left out.

Everyone benefits from cool music, from sharing cool music, and from learning more about the genres.

I agree, but attaching names is bound to make others feel less significant. Something to think about is all. There are many kids here.

... Is the not-surprise that I made a goth playlist or that I have a near-encyclopedic knowledge of the genre from which to make a playlist?

Nope. Don't think so.

I've been in a mood the last week and it was cathartic. And then Iron Bro had to ruin it.

Thank you! And if there's ever something you want me to mix up for you, just lemme know. I don't know what you dance to, or if it's in my wheelhouse, but I do love a good challenge and exploring new genres so I'm absolutely down for it. I've got a lot of cinematic and instrumental/orchestral covers of pop and rock songs too.

I appreciate the offer, but I recently had a really warped experience with a guy who had this "soundtrack of your life" schtick going on and I think right now I'm going to stick to what I already have on my phone. But I'll let you know if I change my mind?

Considering what YouTube and Soundcloud have already done to music, I'm not entirely sure I want to know what it looks like in 200 years. So I'm glad I could give you something to listen to!
