I was talking to Nico about making this playlist a while ago and it took me so long because it sort of turned into a monstrosity and then became two playlists! So here's the first part: Gothucation.
Before I slam you with music, I want to address the immortal (pun intended) question of "What is Goth?" Bauhaus is considered the first band in the genre, but the first band to be called goth is Siouxsie and the Banshees, who were labeled as such by Rolling Stone in 1978. The overall style, in terms of fashion, was largely inspired by a poster of Siouxsie Sioux and The Cure's Robert Smith and was a response to the "death" of glam rock.
Goth is generally considered an aesthetic or a quality more than a specific sound. There are a number of different sub-genres within goth from industrial goth to bubble goth. There are sad goths, Victorian goths, perky goths, and pastel goths. It's a whole wide world. But there's one thing we can all agree on: Ville Valo is hot.
But before I yadda yadda about Victorians and tuberculosis for six pages, here's the music...
