Complete love :).

Somewhere near the beginning, the likely ending was readily apparent. However, the route you took to get to it was anything but :). Fantastic story - loved it.

Snape's relationship with Lily jr was completely wonderful - actually, with all the kids, and even the non-relationship that skirted around James jr was appealing in a way. I found what you did with Draco incredibly satisfying, with Snape as a mentor helping develop him into someone quite human.

I'm an absolute sucker for the stories that span decades and pile on the pain in the middle. Harry, avoiding Snape for the first few years of Harry's marriage to Ginny. Snape, almost entirely avoiding Harry for decades, all that loneliness and difficulty for both of them.

I'll admit a personal mild, er, something - not dislike, nothing so strong, maybe just that it strikes me as a little unlikely? - for the approach that has so many of the central male characters in a verse fancying the lads. Snape, Harry, Draco, Albus jr, Teddy Lupin, Sirius and Remus... Still, the last two are practically canon, and with wee Al and Teddy one could easily argue genetics, and you'd pretty clearly established Draco as shagging anything that moved. Heh. That was immense fun, actually. I think it wasn't so jarring in this story because the discussion of sexuality was so central to the primary relationship, so there's sense in focusing on secondary relationships that are same-sex and related in some way.

Hah, I think I just talked myself out of having a problem with it in regard to this story :D.

Anyway. This was gorgeous, a bit epic (in a good way!) and I loved the slow and obstacle-filled development of the romantic side of the relationship.

I thought about making this gen, and I easily could have. Except that my heart ached for Snape being physically marooned in that portrait for so long. I mean, never touching another human being for fifty years. I couldn't do that to him. So, sure we have more gay men in this story than you can shake a stick at. But you know, it's not about teh gay love, it's about love to me, so their genders aren't the driving force. Although the bit about Sirius and Remus I would have left, because what ELSE would have propelled Sirius to do such a vicious thing. I really wish she had answered that, because by leaving it hanging, it calls into question Sirius' character in such a fundemental way. I mean, if he was capable of attempted murder, then he's an unworthy object of Harry's affection, which calls into question all sorts of issues. So, for me, I had to create some sort of really horrific event that would place Sirius under Snape's thumb. Being outed in a boarding school would qualify.

Yes, a legitimate criticism of this story is its meandering pace. But I wanted to give the reader a sense of the passage of time. Of course, I also didn't want to LOSE the reader, it was a fine line to walk. To create the sense of time slow moving forward, events taking place over a continuum, Snape being virutally incarcerated in this portrait, helpless to stop everyone aging around him, and yet he doesn't age. Glad to hear it worked! Thanks for the lovely comments!

Thank you so much for this story! Thanks for giving Snape a character and a personality again. After vol#7 it takes a lot to rebuild that impressive and multi-layered persona that Snape can be. You managed it. Thank you!

I would be a liar if I didn't say that my general unhappiness with book 7 wasn't the genesis of this story. There were many questions that should have been answered and weren't so... here you go! Glad you enjoyed!

Interesting, clever. Good to see them both maturing. Sad to know they both had unhappy lives – though at least Harry always unreservedly loved his children.

Oh my god. You made me like Dumbledore again! This fic actually lets me stomach canon.

I usually hate stories told in first person, but this worked. The bit about Snape saying he hates Ginny because love was cheap and expected to her could only work directly from Snape's mouth.

You also did a great job weaving in other characters. Snape and Minerva had a great dynamic. Harry's children = perfect. I usually like Albus to be the Slytherin, but it worked for Lily...because one Potter child has to be a Slytherin.

My favorite lines...

Professor Snape would have been the first to tell you that I'm not good with words. In fact, he told me that I was an inarticulate arse about six times a week. So it's ironic that it's me being the one to speak for him.

So sweet. So Harry.

I certainly hope that Minerva hadn't ever carried a torch for him; the man lacked both a chin and a backbone, but those sorts of childhood hurts scab over but never seem to heal. I consider myself an expert on that subject.

"You are here because you wish my advice on which fork to use?"

What brings you here besides your apology—four years too late, I might add—and demonstrating your pathetic inability to name children. James? Please.

About time, since they've been miserable forever. Plus, Dad is so gay.

And I really loved the mumbled Harry line about the potions NEWTS. Classic!

But the best is that Snape compliments Harry for his command of fandom terminology.

All in all, this fic left me feeling very fulfilled. The only thing I'm left wondering is exactly what appalling things Malfoy fucked when he was a student?

I started out this fic by making Dumbledore pretty evil, but as the story progressed I just couldn't maintain it. He is completely ruthless, but he is not without conscience. Malfoy was an equal opportunity slut. If it had a heartbeat, he was on them.

Wow, this story feels like an epic...spanning so many years (which I love, btw)

I really liked it but have to admit that I liked the second half better than the first.

Harry's eulogy at the funeral was great. And so much love for the kids...loved the way you wrote them...and how Snape and Harry interacted with them. Lily in Slytherin, James in Gryffindor and Albus in Ravenclaw...you don't see that everyday.

I also really loved you characterization, the relationship between Harry and Snape and how they worked together.

Oh, and so much love for Snape and McGonagall.

Really liked Harry as the headmaster...and Albus catching Harry and Draco, wow!

Enjoyed it. Fantastic story!

I can't begin to even tell you how much I loved this story. I made an MP3 file of it so I could listen to it today while I walked. It was so good, I kept listening to it when I went back to work after lunch. I had to finish it!

Everything was perfect - the slow realization of how they felt about each other, Snape's talking Harry into staying with his family responsibilities. And I like Draco, and their kids, and poor Al; I remember so well the hurt feeling of seeing a 'crush' in someone else's arms - I wish I had an imagination like yours! I never would have come up with something as original as this.

And in the end, they're together! Go YOU! (except, you're not on my team - oh well, if I could vote, you'd still get a perfect score from me!)

I absolutely loved this story! I really like your voice of Snape, and feel like you left enough rough edges, yet allowed us to see a gentle side of him at times. Also love his interaction with Minerva, great version of his relationship with Dumbledore. I very much liked the way you portrayed Harry's kids, gave them distinct and believable personalities. Very good narrative progress, very good mix of dialogue and narrative. For me it was a real... um... cursor-scroller? Whatever the cyber version of page-turner would be, that's what it was! The angst just about killed me! All 9s, that's for sure.

This is beyond amazing! I always thought the inner-workings of the portraits of the dead were fascinating. And this was just a perfect insight into how it could be. I loved your Snape and his spot on advice for Harry every time. Oh, and Lily was a doll. I loved her interactions with Snape so much!

I finally had a chance to sit down and read this story. Now, I wish I'd found the time sooner. What an excellent story. I loved the whole concept of the soul and that the portraits weren't supposed to have a soul, but that Snape did because of the debt.

And Snape mentoring Harry whether he liked it or not. Just so that Harry should stay with Ginny until the kids get to school. That was too perfect. and so in character. I loved the bits where Harry hugged the portrait and it was too sad, too.

I loved the kids in this. And loved the idea of all those pictures of cool places for Snape to go and ultimately to hide in. There were just so many good ideas in this story.

And I especially loved the end. This is one of those stories I'll pull out and read start to finish again and again. It just works so well.

Great Job!

Bitter and Sweet, Sad and Happy, how did you weave such contrasting emotion into this story? Wah~ To stick Snape in half-life and leave Harry to fumble in his life. And then to have Snape instruct Harry through... *sobs* *haha* I don't even know what kind of emotions I have now. Though I love the last part, and yet, it's still so bittersweet. I remembered reading about portrait!snape too, just can't remember where. Always bittersweet when that happens. You painted such a rainbow of colour of life. Thank you!

If I'm incoherent, it's your fault! I don't think I can find myself after reading this!

This fic made me smile so much. I love that you didn't try to make Snape fully alive, I love someone trying to take on the challenge, especially in such an unexpected way.

All the elements you brought together for this fic were just amazing, and I'm rather jealous of all Snape's potraits with different locations - would that it were possible.

I love Snape's friendship with Lily the younger and the heartfelt and detailed thoughts he gave on his friendship/hatred with everyone from the marauders era. I really like your Minerva for some reason too.

So many elements which came together for a fantastic fic. :D

"She thought to quell me with her Scottish death glare. Hah!" God, I love your Minerva & her & Snape's long-term-firewhiskey-swilling-cigar-smoking-friendship . . .

Stunning, as always!

This is kind of like your very own crossover fic. As far as I can tell, you usually either write Snape/Harry learning to come to terms with life/their feelings about each other or DRACO/DRACO/DRACO (with a side order of Harry). But this time, we don't even have to choose, Harry gets to have gorgeous sex with Draco (though Draco doesn't swan as much as usual) AND fall in love with Snape.

This fic wraps up all the botched or unanswered questions about the best JKRowling characters in a way that's totally satisfying AND emotionally believable. Seeing Harry grow up/his children grow up, how Snape gets to have a friendship with A Lily (if not THE Lily) is so heartwarming.

Really, the only dangling question is: does Albus ever get a shot at Draco??

Oh, and I love what you do with all the painted worlds Snape gets to inhabit. Harry having himself painted in Snape's bedroom with a gigantic bed! And that ending is the best ever, Snape happy for the first time in his life/death, sliding into the beauty and heat that is Harry (GAH!)

I read this when it first posted but somehow forgot to comment-I apologize for that.

First of all, thank you for writing what you wanted to write-shamelessly, passionately. I think from Snape's side-it was nice to see him able to live the life he could have had even if it was in a portrait half-life. This fic was painful at times, brutally honest-the characters very IC. And as much as it's sad to hear you won't write any more Snarry (understandably) and you've written a classic take on the Epilogue and beyond. An enthralling, compelling read.

Ohhhh. I am up past my bedtime, but I couldn't resist finishing this once I'd started. You wrapped up so many loose ends for me, some of which I hadn't even known I wanted wrapped up. I found the part about James loving Lily particularly insightful. (And Harry's tears in response...*wibbles*)

I also really loved this part:

"My boy, how could you think I wouldn't have been there?"

Such a moving scene. I find the dynamic between Dumbledore and Snape so fascinating. Thanks for doing it justice here.

Potter always struck me as a hugger, and sure enough his arms wrapped around me. To feel his body pressed against me, solid and not so much warm as just so there, not a fantasy, not a wish.

Harry is totally a hugger. I liked that he hugged or curled up with the portrait several times over the course of the story, and then finally at the end he got the real thing.

Beautifully done, not just Harry and Snape but all the secondary characters as well.

In even slightly less abled hands, this story would not have worked - after all, Snape was basically immobile for the entire time, and so most of the plot had to be conveyed via conversations; but I was just so engaged in catching a glimpse into Snape's outlook of life that I never felt there was a single dull moment, and this is the most comprehensive, and enlightening portrayal of Snape I have ever seen - better than any metas or discussion; if anyone ever asks me how I imagine Snape to be, I would just point him / her to this fic. It also makes me, well, forgive Dumbledore, in a way; not so much as thinking he is right, but just seeing his wisdom, his humanity;

Then there is Harry; this Harry breaks my heart...it reminds me why I always proclaim myself as Harry's fangirl :) ... he is human and he has his faults... but there is something so pure and sweet in him, despite what he has gone through; his interactions with Snape in this fic is believable and therefore so heartbreaking ... and in the end, I am not as much cheering as just having this happiness that comes from deep within, a simmering joy that in the end it all comes through... that this end, that all the sadness and hardship along the path in life and in death is inevitable as it is necessary. And the concept of forgiveness and debts and the cycle.. it just makes so much sense, although there is no way I can explain why it is so.

This is awesome... Thank you so much for writing and sharing this.

This has been languishing in my bookmarks for nearly a year, and I've finally gotten round to it! (Takes me a while to find time for things upwards of 10k, never mind nearly 40k.) You hardly need another comment I suppose, but here's one anyway:

Death, apparently, only means that I can't brush the dandruff off of her shoulders and she can't owl me wee vials of shampoo. Other than that, things are status quo.

*giggles*

I like the drama about forgivness and everything between Severus and Albus, and the sniping camaraderie with Minerva.

"You can't come home again," I murmured. "Your recent travails place you beyond your peers. That is immutable."

Frodo Potter?

To close the chapter, finally, on that arrogant young man whose pride ruled him and robbed him of any potential happiness forever.

Oh Severus...

This is what happens then when you die. Your soul is welcomed by those who loved you, and if you were not loved, you are stranded, your soul hovering for eternity. Unless someone has your portrait painted and then you sit drinking warm nothing for eternity.

...*cries*

Mmm, thanks for the extra little garnish of Harry/Draco!

I like Severus becoming friends with Lily the younger. It doesn't exactly fix everything (that sort of wound doesn't exactly get "fixed") but it does soothe it.
