Who: Wash + OPEN
When: Monday, mid-morning
Where: Battery Park
What: An overdue arrival
Rating/status: There may be some harsh words spoken.

A storm was movin' in. Big angry clouds rolling in over the city, sweeping harsh winds through the trees in Battery Park. Near the water's edge, a figure in a blue flight-suit sat slumped on a bench. Wind whipped at his hair, sending a few scattered leaves twirling around his feet.

As the first drops of rain fell, the unconscious figure on suddenly gasped for breath, dragging down oxygen like a drowning man breaking the surface. His hands grasped at the front of his flight suit, gathering handfuls of fabric over his stomach.

Finding nothing there, the man opened his eyes and looked down at himself. At first he didn't take in the change in setting, he was to concerned with the fact that he'd been sure something had hit him. He stared at his not-impaled body as raindrops started to fall on the back of his neck.

Rain on a space ship? He finally looked up and took in the span of the open park, its trees, its water, it's most definite not outer-spaceness.

"Wo bu shin wo dah yan jing," he muttered as he used the arm of the bench to push himself standing, "I've died and gone to..." He took in another sweep of the panorama "Ariel?"

Sebastian had seen all sorts in his centuries of life on Earth. He knew better than to judge someone based on their appearance - after all, he'd found most nobility to be far cruder than commoners, and no one would ever think to guess that he was anything other than a servant.

But he couldn't help and sniff a little at the man who'd just staggered up from the bench. Sebastian liked things to be beautiful, perfect, and a park in the rain still had beauty, but mumbling pedestrians took away from it.

On the other hand, his job had taught him to be courteous and polite to even the strangest of creatures (provided they weren't trying to kill him or his master), and some odd types had been turning up lately. He pulled out a black umbrella - seemingly from the depths of his coat - opened it, and held it out to the man.

"You're hardly dead," he said. "And you're in New York City."

"That's easy for you to say," Wash said, squinting at the tall Asian man, "you didn't just crash land on a techno-planet and then get yourself impaled by rabid space freaks." He rubbed at the spot on his chest where he could still imagine a gaping hole.

"Of course," he said, "I could just be special."

He blinked at the offered umbrella and took. He held it over himself, fully aware that he looked completely ridiculous with it.

"New York City?" He asked, never having bothered to read much on the cities of Earth-That-Was. "What planet did you say this is? Core, by the looks of it, fuhn pi. You're insane. Or I'm insane. Which one of us is sane?"

Sebastian remained unimpressed. Clearly, rambling crazy men were crazy, but he did find it interesting that what he said made sense - grammatically, at least.

"This is Earth," he said. "And I am quite sane, by my standards. Which are quite high," he added unneccessarily. "I have experienced much in my life, but none of it has ever led me to... babble."

The mere thought of losing control like that was appalling.

He peered at the man. Special? He certainly smelled odd, for his kind. "You're human," Sebastian observed. "Where did you come from?"

Wash leveled the stranger with what he hoped was a disbelieving look, but it might not have come out quite right. "Earth is gone, my friend, which adds weight to my 'this is the afterlife' theory." He turned around to regard the city behind him. "And I don't babble. I narrate, maybe, or ramble occasionally."

He looked back at the other man and smirked. "Of course I'm human. Ain't no aliens in the Black, everybody knows that. Even Reavers are human, in body anyway."

He scratched his temple as he thought back to the last half hour or so of his life. It was already starting to get a bit fuzzy. "Some moon out on the edge of space, I never caught the name of it."

[Argh, sorry for the slowness! Between cleaning up after our typhoon and preparing presentations for work, once I put this off the first day, it was gone from my brain. >.>;]

"I'm not quite certain you're sane," Sebastian said, though he didn't think that'd matter much to the man. But he supposed it wasn't his place to judge.

He was also quite certain that the man was babbling.

"Sir," he went for instead, since arguing a point like that wouldn't be productive. "I would refrain from mentioning that to too many people here. The locals are... simple people. They would not respond well to a man from outer space, especially if he's rambling about Earth being destroyed."

He lifted his chin a minute amount. Something the man had said sounded interesting. Perhaps there was hope for his sanity yet. "However, I am not one of those locals. What are these Reavers you've encountered, if they are not quite human and not alien?"

(( No worries! It's been a bit hectic in the World of Squeaky, so I forgive you. May I ask where you are? I'm always so curious about where in the world folks come from. ))

"Earth wasn't destroyed," Wash said, "least I don't think it was. Stories get a might fuzzy, general thought is that it got all used up. But I don't suppose you much care, because here she is."

He ran his hands through his hair. If he was dead, he was stuck here. If he wasn't dead, and this was some sort of wacky time-bending crazy, then he might not be stuck here. If the choice was being impaled and dead versus being stuck here and alive, maybe being stuck wasn't so bad. Then again, the notion of living the rest of his life in some displaced city without Zoe was a terrifying thought.

As soon as his wife's name popped into his head, he felt his adrenaline go up again. Was she okay? That landing had been pretty rough. And even if she was all right, where was she? Did she get pulled in, too? Was she wondering where he'd gone? Was his body still there with her crying over it? No, Zoe didn't cry. Not ever.

"Huh?" He looked back at his new acquaintance. "Uh, they were humans once, until the government dosed 'em with something that was supposed to pacify them, but it made them crazy. Like, eat your skin crazy."

[Up until a month and a half ago, I was in California (I seem to remember you being in the PST timezone...?). Now I'm in Japan. :D]

"Interesting," Sebastian murmured, because it was. "I've never found skin to be particularly nutritious."

He didn't smile, because he'd found his smile wasn't as disarming as most peoples' were and tended to cause humans to dwell on throwaway remarks.

"You might want to be watchful for them," he went on, brushing past the just slightly cannibalistic remark. "There have been strange creatures in the city lately. Creatures like monsters that appear and disappear into smoke. Things that New York has not seen before."

Sebastian was probably not the best welcoming committee for strangers dropping out of the sky. But then again, he felt he dispensed useful information.

(( Ooo, neat! I'm in North Idaho, right on the Idaho side of the Washington border. Boise native, though. ))

"Reavers aren't exactly sane, are they?" Wash said, running a hand over the front of his flight suit again. Still no gaping hole. Weird.

"You don't say?" He looked back at the stranger. "Strange things in a city that's not supposed to exist? Alright, fine, say everything you've told me is true, am I stuck here? What do I do now?"

Sebastian's shoulders twitched, the movement as close as he usually got to a shrug. "First, accept that it is true. Then, do whatever you like. Get a job, try to go home, look for your friends or family."

He was still looking for Ciel and the little brat of a demon was nowhere to be found, which Sebastian honestly didn't mind very much. Then again, humans tended to be much more attached to their partners.

"The year is 1964, although I suspect that may not help you." Not if the man was from outer space and kept talking like Sebastian was a liar or a figment of his imagination. "My name is Sebastian," he said, pressing his right hand over his heart. "I frequently travel in the city, so if you are looking for others, I may be able to help you."

"Well, if I'm stuck, I might not have any choice but to accept it. Don't suppose anyone around here needs a pilot." Wash looked skyward and saw nothing but clouds. "Not much by way of flying, is there?" Now, the other stuff the guy had said. "Try to get home, you say? Is there a way?" Looking for his friends and family, that was something he could dedicate himself to.

"Well," he said, "I'm looking for a woman. A specific one. Amazon, skin the color of cocoa, could blast a hole in you without blinking, and has the finest ass this side of Osiris. Or anywhere. Not that you know where Osiris is."

"This is my home," Sebastian replied. "I've never tried to escape it." He'd never met anyone who'd been looking to leave the city and succeeded, either, probably because they wouldn't have come back.

He blinked at Wash's description. How could one tell if someone could blast holes in people, or if an ass was 'fine?' But perhaps this woman was distinctive enough to warrant such a description. "I see. Should I find her, who should I say is looking for her?" he asked. "And the only Osiris I recall was an Egyptian god. Is it the planet you come from?"

"Her husband," Wash replied simply, "she'll want to see me. Can't make it through her day without me, poor flower." At the other's question about Osiris, Wash grimaced. "Shiah hwa, no. Osiris is a bit rich for my blood. Really, I'm broke. The joo fuen chse of a rock I came from doesn't deserve a name. It's got one, but it's not important."

"I see," Sebastian said, even though there were definitely some unfamiliar words in there. They sounded vaguely like things he'd heard Lau say, but the Chinese noble had a precision to his accent that this man didn't have.

Mere words aside, he lacked the context to make sense of most of it. But he still wasn't entirely sure the man was in the right state of mind, so he wasn't bothered by that.

"I assume you have a name, husband?"

"Wash," he replied, "like something you do to a dirty window, but not." Wash was not a hand-shaking man. The Cap might do it out of politeness, but that's why he got the biggest share and got to wear the fancy coat.

Sebastian bowed slightly, with the same gravity he'd use for a foreign dignitary. "Mister Wash. I have business I must attend elsewhere, but I wish you luck finding your way."

Or at least surviving without being mistaken for a mental patient, but that didn't seem worth mentioning out loud.

He had taken a few steps before he remembered to add, "Please keep the umbrella."

Wash looked up at the umbrella in his hand. "Gee, thanks," he said, mostly to himself, as he turned away, "I'll be sure to ask it for directions about how to get around this crazy place."

Well. This was going to be fun.
