Too Quiet
Who: Simon, Regina
What: more reading in a diner
When: Saturday afternoon
Where: ... a diner
Rating: low
Status: Complete

Simon honestly felt his hand was a little forced. If he'd had more time, he wouldn't have decided the way he had, but the honest truth of the matter was that he needed a job. He'd just deal with big hospital politics until more doors were open for him. Besides, it might not be the nightmare he was envisioning. He might be able to talk logic into some of the doctors, to explain why what they were doing was doing more long-term harm to their patients than helping them.

He'd do his best. It was all he could do.

Funnily enough, he foresaw lots of frustration and several fruitless battles in his future. Oh well. He could do the most good at the bigger hospital, so for now, Metropolitan General was his place of employment.

He'd also managed to get an apartment. It was a little thing, but after living on Serenity, it wasn't as though he needed a mansion. He was accustomed to living in a small bunk; the apartment was a few times larger than that, complete with kitchenette and shower. What more could he possibly ask for?

In time, he thought he'd manage to save up enough to move into a larger place. A nicer place. For now though, this would do. It would have to do; his options were severely limited. But then, he was no stranger to making do on practically nothing.

Still, the quiet of the single room apartment was getting to him. So he gathered up the hospital's manual and a few of the texts he hadn't gone through yet and carted them off to the diner on the corner. It was nice to just be around people, and sometimes that wound him with some very interesting conversation ... which he wouldn't mind, either.

"No," Simon replied before he looked up. "They've already cured that," he added with a slight smile. It was an attempt at a joke, though it had probably fallen flat. Most of his jokes did.

He shook his head slightly before studying her in an attempt to determine if he'd seen her around before, but he didn't think he had. Or if he had, she'd slipped his mind.

"I was just ..." He gestured to the hospital's manual. "Brushing up on procedures for ... for work." It still felt weird to say that. Work. A job, at an actual hospital, even if it was ridiculously far back in his past. "Reacquainting myself with the procedures for this ..." He made a gesture meant to indicate both the time and place, but he wasn't sure that was how it had come off.

Gina chuckled a little regardless, even if she wasn't the funniest person around - her wit tended to be razor sharp and draw blood whenever applicable - but she could appreciate any attempt at humour. "So you're not from this time period?" she asked casually, as if one might be discussing the weather. And she took her coffee mug and sat down at the table with Simon, despite the lack of invitation. Royalty was much more interesting than...hospital whatever.

"What is it that you do, exactly?"

Simon shook his head. "No. I'm from ... a ... well, distant future. Five hundred years, give or take," he explained. "I live on a space ship," he added, mostly for context. Then he suddenly wasn't sure if that was helping the idea of it or not; maybe living on a space ship sounded too far fetched, especially if she was native to this place and time.

"I'm a ... well, was a trauma surgeon, at home. Now I'm ... just working as a doctor. Doing what they'll let me do," he added. He managed to keep the bitterness out of his voice because he knew eventually his experience was going to speak for itself, and he wasn't a wallflower. He pushed his way into trauma situations anyway.

"And what ... what about you?" He prompted as he glanced over to her. "Are you from around here or did you ... just show up here one day?"

"Five hundred years?" Gina's eyes widened, the sapphires in them glinting curiously. It took a lot to surprise her, and she hadn't met anyone from that far off yet. "A...space ship?" Judging by her tone, she didn't know much about it. Hadn't heard of such a thing at all, actually. "Pardon my ignorance, but what is that?"

Her question probably gave away her answer, and she smiled ruefully. "I am from Bavaria, from the 1800s. I just showed up here one day, as you put it. And no, I don't know why. I don't think anyone knows. A doctor is a noble profession though, at least that's useful anywhere."

Oh, of course! Manners! Her Royal Majesty held out her hand, daintily, as if she expected a greeting kiss. "I am Regina St. Germain. Gina's fine, however, if you prefer."

Simon had a feeling he was going to be getting that reaction a lot, and he grinned slightly. "It's ..." he hesitated as he tried to find a way to explain it in terms that she'd be able to relate to. He thought an airplane might be a place to start, or a recreational vehicle, but neither of them quite conveyed everything that Serenity was. "You know how airplanes fly through the sky? A space ship is ... similar, but it travels through place instead, and it's big enough for us to live on, and store cargo. We can travel to different planets and moons, and ... anywhere in the known universe." He hesitated. "I'm ... not really sure that helps any."

Given the year she'd said she was from, he really doubted it would help, but he honestly had no real basis of comparison to start with. It was kind of interesting to realize just what a range of dates people were being pulled from, and he wondered if there was anyone from further back than that. "There is that," he agreed in response to the statement about his profession. The methods, mentality, and tools might be different, but the idea was the same.

"Simon Tam," he replied as he took her hand and squeezed it gently. He had an idea of what the position had implied, but he wasn't really comfortable with that. "Pleasure to meet you, Gina."

Well, that was an interesting greeting! Men in this era seemed to prefer handshakes which was very strange to Gina and her blue blood. Her lips quirked in a baby smile though, one that would grow up into a real one someday. "So you have been to the moon? And different planets?" she asked eagerly, patting his hand before freeing it to pick up her coffee mug and take a sip.

"Well, not ... not this moon," Simon replied. "Earth's moon, I mean. In my time, we're not even in the same galaxy as Earth. It ... well, people burned it out. Used it up, and by then they'd discovered space travel, so they just ... everyone moved to this new galaxy. Planets that weren't inhabitable yet were terraformed ... ah. Made so that they resembled Earth in atmosphere and were in habitable.

"We go to a lot of planets, and there are moons that have been terraformed as well. So there ... there are a lot of options for places to live. Some nicer than others," he added. That was about as much detail as he was going to get into though, because otherwise he was getting into the Alliance and Unification and he'd rather not.

She made a thoughtful noise, sporting a crinkle of her elegant nose at the curl of its slim bridge much like a wreath of disgust. "It does not surprise me that Earth was burned out. One of the things that I was shocked to see when I got here was all the...waste." Gina didn't mean to sound like a greenpeace beatnik or whatever, but really now! Did you really need to use a whole can of hairspray just to make a run to the store? Plus it made hair feel like plastic. Ugh.

"This," she waved her hand around much like Simon had done earlier. "Must have been quite a shock for you, then. Do you know people here or are you alone?"

"They haven't learned, either," he added with a faint laugh. "They'll just burn out these new planets to in a couple thousand years, but that's okay because we can just make more." There was an edge of sarcasm to his voice, and he ran his hand down over his mouth. He didn't mean to go off, really, but ... some topics pressed buttons.

He shook his head. "No. I'm ... I'm alone here." He'd adjusted to the idea that River was on the ship and in the hands of the crew and there was nothing he could do about it, and she was probably better off there ... but that didn't stop him from missing her. Or Kaylee. "What ... what about you? Do you ... is anyone from your world or time here? People you know?"

The nose crinkle turned more into something amused that said 'aww, how precious!' when Simon went off on his rant - well, he wasn't wrong, after all. Gina was a vain creature when it came to beauty products and the like but even she had her limits. Hairspray was one of them.

She a great many thoughts running through her mind, which may have been easy to discern because of the way she canted her head at his response. "No, I'm alone here," Gina sighed. "It is not as if I loathe it in this place - in many ways it is better and there are more opportunities - but I think not having answers is what gets to most people, you know?"

Besides, even if anyone from her past life showed up here. Like...husband, ex-husband, what have you? Dead. Stepdaughter? Definitely dead. Poisoned and sliced up into pieces and burned, her ashes tossed to the winds. Maternal, Gina was not.

Simon nodded. He could understand and even relate a little. Life on the ship was pleasant enough -- now -- and River seemed to like it well enough. But this, here, reminded him more of what he'd had to sacrifice. A steady location, a steady job at a fast-paced hospital, a steady source of income. These things he didn't have at home, and while he wasn't in a rush to hope this was a permanent thing, it was nice enough while he had it.

He just wished he knew why he was here, and if it was some fluke, how he'd gotten here. He still wanted to go back and would leap at the chance to do just that, but without answers and explanations, they had no where to even start looking.

"I know what you mean," he said quietly after a contemplative silence. "Maybe ... whoever's working on this situation will come up with something soon." He assumed people were working on it, at any rate.

"You assume someone is working on it," Gina smiled wryly, echoing his thoughts. Not that she was a mind reader, but still, it was a hopeful assumption to make. "So what else do you plan to do with your time besides work as a doctor and read hospital manuals in diners?" she asked Simon, catching her chin in the cusp of her palm, balancing an arm on the table as she studied him.

"I'd like to think that ... someone is trying to find a way out. Someone better equipped to deal with ... whatever forces are holding us here, yes." He wondered if anyone was equipped to handle this sort of thing, but surely someone out there was ... working on it.

He shook his head before he laughed quietly. "I don't ... really know," he confessed. "I ... there wasn't a lot of ... I mean, at home, on the ship, options were pretty limited. Read a lot. Talked to the other people on the ship. Played cards." He felt a brief twinge, a longing for Serenity, but he pushed it away. There was nothing he could do about that right now so it was best not to think about it.

"I suppose I'll ... find something here. Make friends. Hang out with them."

"You didn't go absolutely insane from the cabin fever?" If he didn't, she would be rather impressed. Being cooped up in a small space (well, Gina made her own assumption and gathered that any spaceship probably wasn't as luxurious as the castle she had lived in prior) would probably would bring out her dark side. Usually she tried to keep the side that relished in pain and torture in check for the sake of societal norms but all rules would go out the window on a spaceship.

She laughed at the phrase 'hang out with them.' For a second it sounded like Simon was going to swing his friends from the gallows, but oh, we weren't that lucky. "You are absolutely precious," Her Majesty crooned with delight. "Friendship does tend to make things easier, yes. It's not really what you know, but who you know. I've always believed that."

"Well, no," Simon said. "We weren't ... always on the ship. There were jobs, and supply runs, and other ... we stopped on different planets, for different things. Plenty of outside time and changes of scenery." And kidnappings and rescues and bullet holes ... plenty of things. "Plus, River, my sister, she ... kept me on my toes. Never a dull moment with her around."

He didn't think anyone had ever referred to him as precious before. Not while he was grown, at any rate, and he grinned a little awkwardly. "It would be nice, if ... some of my friends showed up," he confessed. Not that he wanted to trap them here, but if they were going to be pulled in anyway it would be nice to have them around.

Oh, well, of course! Stopping on different planets! Why was all of that so strangely fascinating? Gina didn't have stories to tell like that. Only stories of blood and poison and betrayal and magic mirrors. Speaking of...perhaps she would ask hers about the space pirate here. See what it had to say.

"Well, if you get bored with your reading and saving lives or patching up scraped knees or whatever you'll be doing, you can 'hang out' - " It sounded funny coming from such a dignified woman, "...with me if you'd like," she said, writing her phone number on the back of a lovely embossed card she pulled from her purse. Gina wouldn't use napkins, that was trashy. She slid it over to Simon. "I have a few tricks up my sleeve. Nothing like space travel, but..."

Simon chuckled quietly. He didn't think saving lives was ever going to get boring, but it was nice to have the option to look up someone when he wanted company. He took the card and studied it for a moment, flipping it over to see both sides before he nodded and tucked it into his breast pocket.

"Thank you," he said. "I'll be sure to do that," he promised. Whether or not the occasion would ever come up, who knew? This was a different time, a different place. He was bound to undergo a few changes to his usual patterns and preferred activities.

Besides, he had to admit to being a little curious about the tricks she'd mentioned. Whether that was just a euphemism for something else entirely, or if she really did have some sort of skill of note ... well, maybe he'd find out some day.
