Too Quiet
Who: Simon, Regina
What: more reading in a diner
When: Saturday afternoon
Where: ... a diner
Rating: low
Status: Complete

Simon honestly felt his hand was a little forced. If he'd had more time, he wouldn't have decided the way he had, but the honest truth of the matter was that he needed a job. He'd just deal with big hospital politics until more doors were open for him. Besides, it might not be the nightmare he was envisioning. He might be able to talk logic into some of the doctors, to explain why what they were doing was doing more long-term harm to their patients than helping them.

He'd do his best. It was all he could do.

Funnily enough, he foresaw lots of frustration and several fruitless battles in his future. Oh well. He could do the most good at the bigger hospital, so for now, Metropolitan General was his place of employment.

He'd also managed to get an apartment. It was a little thing, but after living on Serenity, it wasn't as though he needed a mansion. He was accustomed to living in a small bunk; the apartment was a few times larger than that, complete with kitchenette and shower. What more could he possibly ask for?

In time, he thought he'd manage to save up enough to move into a larger place. A nicer place. For now though, this would do. It would have to do; his options were severely limited. But then, he was no stranger to making do on practically nothing.

Still, the quiet of the single room apartment was getting to him. So he gathered up the hospital's manual and a few of the texts he hadn't gone through yet and carted them off to the diner on the corner. It was nice to just be around people, and sometimes that wound him with some very interesting conversation ... which he wouldn't mind, either.

Oh, well, of course! Stopping on different planets! Why was all of that so strangely fascinating? Gina didn't have stories to tell like that. Only stories of blood and poison and betrayal and magic mirrors. Speaking of...perhaps she would ask hers about the space pirate here. See what it had to say.

"Well, if you get bored with your reading and saving lives or patching up scraped knees or whatever you'll be doing, you can 'hang out' - " It sounded funny coming from such a dignified woman, "...with me if you'd like," she said, writing her phone number on the back of a lovely embossed card she pulled from her purse. Gina wouldn't use napkins, that was trashy. She slid it over to Simon. "I have a few tricks up my sleeve. Nothing like space travel, but..."

Simon chuckled quietly. He didn't think saving lives was ever going to get boring, but it was nice to have the option to look up someone when he wanted company. He took the card and studied it for a moment, flipping it over to see both sides before he nodded and tucked it into his breast pocket.

"Thank you," he said. "I'll be sure to do that," he promised. Whether or not the occasion would ever come up, who knew? This was a different time, a different place. He was bound to undergo a few changes to his usual patterns and preferred activities.

Besides, he had to admit to being a little curious about the tricks she'd mentioned. Whether that was just a euphemism for something else entirely, or if she really did have some sort of skill of note ... well, maybe he'd find out some day.
