Who: Cindy and Kurt.
When: Monday evening.
Where: P. J. Clarke's.
What: Drinks, maybe dinner, followed by battle. Typical Monday fare.
Rating/status: R for language later.

The plus side of being back in the 60s was the fact that, while many things about this New york were different, most of the old hangouts were still there and were just as fun as she remembered them. PJ Clarke's was one of such places. The food was good, the drinks were better and a smile and and few well chosen words got Cindy a table ahead of time.

As she took a seat, she glanced around, keeping an eye for her young date. As much as she longed to go back to her own time and her life of undercover action, it was nice to just relax and get to know other people. And Kurt seemed nice and normal, maybe a little too nice and normal...

Oh well, she could use this evening to see what made this lovely boy tick.

Kurt was in fact nice and normal. Except for having to worry about blue fur, a tail, yellow eyes, and fanged teeth when he went out in public - yes, he was actually the epitome of a pleasant young man! He was also nervous. And shy. And somewhat awkward around women, especially one who looked like Cindy and who apparently could make weapons out of rubber bands like Cindy. He was constantly afraid he was doing something wrong, and perhaps that's why his luck with the opposite sex had been...bad. But it wasn't as if he was faking his inexperience. Being a circus freak for twenty-one years wasn't exactly the biggest draw for women, or so he assumed.

Now here he was, dressed nicely in a pair of jeans, a crisp shirt, and a blazer he probably looked like a hipster tool but this type of clothing never went out of style, right? He also was glad to have met up with 1960s Charles Xavier, in order to be honing his abilities, earning his keep, and actually having a roof over his head. He had been waiting to call his friend Alison until he actually had the money to pay her back, and now that he did, he felt so much better.

Image inducer on! Now just not to stutter. "Guten Abend, Cindy," Kurt smiled, sliding into the seat across from her. "I'm so sorry, I hope you weren't waiting long."

"Hello, Kurt," Cindy said after he greeted her. "I got her a few minutes ago. Fantastic place isn't it? One can't deny the charms of the 60s."

A waiter approached, ready to take their drink orders. Cindy didn't have to think it too much. "I'll have a Martini," she said before turning to Kurt. "What's your poison?"

"It is definitely charming," Kurt agreed, chucking a bit. He supposed that was one way to put it, anyway. "And here I thought I'd only get to read about the 60s, without actually living in them."

Drink orders, right! Now, what the heck did he want? Having just turned twenty-one, Kurt hadn't really dipped his toe into the lake of alcoholism yet. But of course, Cindy already knew that and didn't seem to think he was a complete dork - she was here, right? "Just a Manhattan, please," he said to the waiter, and that was probably a good choice. The name of the drink matched the locale!

"How is the job hunt going?" he asked Cindy, once the waiter left. "Have you found anyone to hire you to jump from a great height yet?"

"What we read cannot hold a candle to what we experience," she said, arching a perfectly plucked eyebrow as the boy made his order. Not bad.

She rolled her eyes when Kurt mentioned work. "Not so well. I've been looking into desks job in the meantime, but the competition is fierce and I'm not sure I want to spend my days hearing sexist comments from men. And none of them offer flying oppotunities so I'm still looking." She took her menu and examined it. She was in the mood for cobb salad. And maybe some ribs.

"What about you?" She asked as she looked up. "How's our City treating you on the employment end?"

"You just beat those men up if you hear any sexist comments," he teased, looking up over the top of the menu, which he had been casually studying. Kurt was a man and thus was capable of eating like he had a hollow leg, and everything sounded so good. "But, oh, I don't know...it's alright on my end," he shrugged. "I've been doing, er, performance work. Like what you saw at the World's Fair? That's what I usually do, but at least now I found a place to stay since it seems like getting out isn't really an option right at the moment."

"I don't know if the trouble is worth it," Cindy mussed as their waiter approached. She decided to leave the ribs for some other time.

"I will have the tomato soup, the Cobb salad and a side of grilled asparagus." The waiter nodded and turned towards her partner.

"Save room for dessert," Cindy said. "I want to split a cobbler."

Now that the pre-dinner drinks had arrived, Kurt could sort of calm his nerves with the alcohol. Though the more he considered it, the more decided he wasn't even that nervous. Funny, that. "The chopped sirloin steak, please," he decided, handing the menu back to the waiter. Kurt was a fan of seafood (and hardly got to eat it) but he didn't really want to risk the fish breath if he ordered scallops.

"I promise I'll save room for dessert." He held up his hand, solemnly swearing. Cindy was a girl who could put away her food! Now, that Kurt could respect. It would have been awkward if she ordered one leaf of lettuce. "I am kind of afraid of what you'd do to me if I didn't." His eyes crinkled at the corners when he smiled. "And I like cobbler anyway."

Cindy loved to eat. Plain and simple. She never counted calories as she was always burning them one way or another. Not that she cared, but was relieved when Kurt didn't run away after her order.

"You made a wise choice. All great meals end with a split dessert," she said. "I love apple cobbler, but didn't get to have a lot back home. A friend of mine had issues with it." She shrugged. You'd have issues too if you had been poisoned with apples.

"Issues?" With apple cobbler, really? That was new. Kurt had heard of being afraid of...spiders or snakes or enclosed spaces. But applecobblerphobia was one the medical books probably hadn't diagnosed yet. "Is it just apple or is it peach too...and where are you from?" he asked, curly head tilting slightly, curious.

"Just apples," Cindy replied. "She had a bit of an... allergic reaction."

"As for where I am from, you could say New York, just a different time. I've lived in this city long enought to call it home." She shrugged, trying to make it sound trivial. "And this isn't a bad place, but I miss my blackberry and and my shoe collection." She smiled at him as she leaned forward. "How about you? Do you miss anything from your native Germany?"

The shoe collection statement made him laugh a little, fondly. "It must have been an impressive collection," he said, lifting the glass to his lips to take a sip. "I don't miss a lot of things about Germany," Kurt admitted. "But there are some things, yes. Mostly my adoptive family because they were always there for me, and very accepting." Where else would a circus freak fit in, if not with other circus freaks? His parents must have known that, he reasoned.

"The Black Forest too, it is beautiful."

"Family is always important," Cindy agreed. Unless family was an evil stepmother and stepsisters.

"I always wanted to see the Black Forest whenever I went to Germany, but work kept me busy and.."

Cindy's next words died as she caught sight of a man walking towards the restaurant exit. At first glance there was nothing out of the ordinary about him: square hjaw, slicked back hair, suit, sunglasses. Things was, Cindy had already seen that face before. Too many times.

Flashing a smile towards her companion, she stood up. "I think I just saw an old acquaintace. I'll be right back."

She had hoped to rushed towards the exit, but the place was crowded already and she found herself navigating through the people in order to reach the already exiting man.

"I also - "

Well, okay.

Kurt blinked a few times, processing the fact that Cindy had gotten up and left so quickly. He would wait here patiently, and sip on his drink. Yes. He would do that, and not be a creepy asshole and give her the space she needed to chat with her likely better looking and much more charming old acquaintance.

He fidgeted, checking his watch. Maybe he should...

Leaving a few bills on the table so the waiter didn't think they dined and dashed (or drank and dashed, rather), Kurt hopped up and hurried after Cindy. He found her near the exit.

"Cindy, are you..." Worriedly, he touched her arm. "Is everything alright?"

He was out by the time Cindy made it to the door. She looked through the glass and into the street, cursing at the amount of men in suits making this harder. Maybe she had been wrong. After all, the Adversary had been defeated already.... in her time at least.

She saw them just as Kurt talked to her - three of them, blond brunet and redhead, but other than exactly the same.

With a sight, she turned to face Kurt. "I'm afraid we're going to have to cut this evening short."

"What?" Kurt wasn't angry, he was mostly just concerned for Cindy. "Alright, but...I'm not leaving you here," he said in a firm voice, and maybe he was being presumptuous, but judging by the way she sounded? Those people were probably not old friends of hers.

"Who are they?"

With a sight, Cindy moved her arm around Kurt's and led him outside. So much for a nice normal guy and their nice dinner.

"They are soldiers," she explained as she led the way. "Nearly indestructible wooden soldiers that usually wander around in groups of threes." She looked at him. "Can you throw a good punch, Kurt?"

"Nearly indestructible?" Kurt repeated - that didn't bode well, but he could always teleport them both away if it got to be too hairy. "How can they be destructed, then? And yes..." He nodded in response to her question. "I have been trained in the art of hand to hand combat and swordfighting."

He didn't have a foil or a sabre here, but he could use his tail in place of a bladed weapon!

"Good to know," Cindy said. "Most guys I've gone out with are not exactly fighting champions."

She was running her fingers absently against an iron fence. After making sure nobody was looking at them, she pulled, yanking a heavy metal bar off the fence. "Not a sword, but maybe it will help?"

"You pretty mych have to pick them apart, then make sure they won't get back up and use pieces off their fallen conrades to stand. And as tempting as fire may be... avoid it. At least for now."

What the --

Cindy was deceptively strong for someone of her size and stature! Kurt actually laughed a little, surprised, but he took the metal bar with a grand bow at the waist.

"Very well," he said and then, with his other hand, turned off the image inducer watch he was wearing. "I sometimes use my tail too."

No one was looking, they were about to fight wooden soldiers in a dark alley, and Cindy ought to know what she was in for. So basically, what did he have to lose? This night had already been strange and if she wanted to run away (to avoid both him and the nearly indestructible soldiers) then he wouldn't blame her.

"I'm sure you haven't gone out with many guys who are blue either."

Despite how things were going to get, cindy had to admit she was happy to be around someone who didn't seen put out by her strenght. Didn't happen often.

Tail? What did he mean with... Oh. Ok, she didn't see that coming. Then again, she was the original incarnation of one of the world's most popular fairy tales. Who was she to judge?

"Oh, you have no idea the type of guys I've dated," she said with a grin as she lead the way into the alley. Plenty of time to ask questions once these guys were taken care of.

"I have not dated, er...well..." Maybe Kurt should just stop talking. He was likely to incriminate himself with his shoddy experiences at love and romance. "Though I have to say, you are definitely...an ideal date." She was beautiful and smart and, hey, they were about to have an adventure! Kurt's tail twitched in excitement - this whole situation totally catered to his swashbuckling fun-loving side. Just as long as they didn't get hurt...

"I think I'd love to hear your story," Cindy said. "Maybe after this?"

She walked straight into the alley, footsteps echoing on the concrete floor. The three soldiers were standing closed to each other examining the contents of a bag. Cindy had an awful feeling about its contents.

They looked up as she approached them, briefly caught by suprised. Good.

"Hi!" she said brightly before kicking the bag hard enough to send it flying a few feet behind her.

"Don't let them get it!" she shouted to Kurt as she punched the nearest soldier in the face, wood breaking with a satisfying crunch. How she had missed this!

Luckily, Kurt was good at following instructions. He was also good at brawling in dark alleys and besides, this was all in the name of...! Something. Dating? Oh well. He didn't have time to think about it much, he only had time to teleport away - bamf! - in a puff of smoke when one of the wooden soldiers made a grab for him. He ended up on the back of that same one, twisting the head with a sickening crack as he snapped what he assumed to be...wooden spinal cord?

The bag! Cindy said not to let them get it, so Kurt was gone in another flash, picking up the bag and leaving another trail of smoke in his wake when he teleported himself (and the bag) away to an undisclosed location. He was back a second later, without the bag, and just in time to flip over and kick a wooden face.

"What's in the bag, or is that a question for later too?" he asked.

Cindy was impressed by Kurt's moves. And rightfully so. She needed all the help she could get with these fellows.

By the time he appeared without the bag, Cindy had succesfully split one of the boys apart, going as far as breaking the limbs in as many pieces as she could so they wouldn't be able to to reuse them.

"Firearms," she said, looking up at Kurt. They came to this world looking for weapons." She threw a kick at the other soldier standing, the heel of her shoe breaking, and she was pretty sure another thing had broken in her foot. Fuck!

"Those things cost me a fortune," she said angrily as she lifted the soldier and sent him flyinf agaisnt the wall.

Yiiiiikes! Kurt didn't know much about women but he did know that if you messed with their shoes, you would probably die. Cindy proved just that when she picked up that soon-to-be-deceased wooden blockhead and tossed him like a sack of potatoes.

"There are no weapons in their own world??" Kurt wanted to know, scaling the brick wall, using it as leverage to bounce off of and then crash against the soldier he had kicked. The force split him down the chest, so he grabbed on either side and pulled. ...wow, he felt like he was splitting boards for firewood or something.

"Not firearms," Cindy replied as she limped slightly towards the fallen soldier, yanking his head off with one hand and ripping off the one good arm he had left with the other.

"We can do this the easy way or the hard way," she told the head. "What will it be?"

Her expression didn't change, even as the head remained stubbornly silent. With a groan, she smashed it againt the wall. Not her best moment, but she was in a very foul mood already. she turned to Kurt to see how he was doing with his soldier.

Kurt had picked up the metal bar Cindy had given him and - forgoing any type of fancy swashbuckling parry - swung it like a baseball bat in an attempt to practice the great American pastime. Home run! It connected with the wooden soldier's head, which he effectively smashed and turned into scrap bits you might give a seven-year-old to practice hammering on.

"Cindy, you're..." She was hurt! This distressed him a great deal. The sooner they got out of here, the better. "What do you need from them?"

Resting her back against the wall, she sighted. "I need a freaking drink," she muttered. She stared at her ankle with mild amusement.

"I need information," she added. "Which I can only get from an intact head..." she looked at the destroyed ones. "I guess I won't be getting any. Now that the fight was over, she was annoyed with herself. Bigby would have had her skin for this.

There was a clank as Kurt dropped the makeshift weapon. "Scheiße, are you serious?" he asked, but duh, of course she was. It was more like a rhetorical question. Well, hell! That would have been good to know like, fifteen minutes ago. He didn't want Cindy to get in trouble or anything.

"A drink would be good though," he agreed, letting out a whoosh of air and standing beside her against the wall. He thumped his head a few times, gently, as if that would wake him up from this bizarre dream. "Or maybe we can just have a rain check on that. You shouldn't be on that foot of yours."

Then the image inducer was clicked back on, Kurt's human image covering what he truly was, since they were about to emerge back into The Public Eye.

"I'll be healed in an hour tops," Cindy said with a shrug. It would have healed faster if Cindy hadn't spent the last few days overworking.

She arched an eyebrow as Kurt went back to looking human. "That's a trick you don't see everyday at the circus."

"No, it is not...but I suppose it's a necessary trick these days," he chuckled ruefully, running a hand through his mess of curls. "I'm not...human. I'm a mutant and I don't know...I mean, I was born that way." Wow, could he sound any more lame?

No, he did not think so. Guh.

"I guess...this would be a bad time to ask for a goodnight kiss." He hadn't made sure Cindy got home safely yet (but he would!), however, Kurt was afraid the adrenaline of their epic battle would wear off and he'd turn into a chicken shit and never ask.

She stood up straight at the mention of a kiss. Running her hands up and down his jacket - such a nice jacket now covered in dust and oil - another thing ruined the soldiers.

"You are a very seet boy," she told him and she moved closer, warm lips barely there agaisnt his mouth. An invitation.
