an Internet Slang Dictionary!!! thank you schmevil - I need this badly :D
I just found that one yesterday. :D
So I checked the Internet Slang Dictionary and I still have no idea what "motto" means. Is that just a funky in-joke way of saying "ditto"?
That's more specific to Scans_Daily.
The Scans_Daily motto is - "It's never just you."
No, because a shit-ton of comms besides this one use that expression. Trying to credit s_d with "motto" would be like trying to credit Terminator 2 with inventing the phrase "Hasta la vista, baby."

Well, we made it look good.
*sticks out his tongue at you*
Considering how long S_D has been around, and that the use of the term 'motto' was meant to indicate just how often someone said, "Is it just me--?" and someone "You are not the only one!", I'd like to see an older group who had the same giggly, poking fun, female-support dynamic habit.
When people use it here that's what they mean, anyways.
What would be your explanation for the term's etymology, if it wasn't scan daily's motto?
Jesus Christ, FINALLY, that's been bugging me forever.
As a potential addition: Derailing for Dummies. It's admittedly tongue-in-cheek, but it has a good point about the sort of arguments that come up in attempts to skew a conversation.
I clicked, saw the giant "Congratulations - you have privilege!" and loled heartily. :) Thanks for the link.
If you don't have privilege, you likely would have "entitlement", so maybe it works out.
I'm not sure what you mean by that.
Oh, "entitlement" is often used as a counterpart to "privilege." ("The world owes me," that sort of thing.) I don't know if the numbers are equal or not, and of course most people don't see themselves as having either privilege or entitlement problems.
And I really should have specified that was a generic "you," not you as an individual. As in, "You work and save and what happens? The company closes." I wasn't addressing that to you specifically. (Maybe English could use a word for the generic "you"?)
(Maybe English could use a word for the generic "you"?)
"One."
Oh, yes. Thanks, I'll use that. It sounds a bit formal but that is fine with me.
And having now read it through - I really like this piece, and despite its tongue-in-cheekness, think it will be a good addition.
Thanks again. :)
That'll come in handy. On another forum, I get a lot of grief whenever I call out something I find antisemitic, and that grief usually takes the from of something mentioned on that page. From now on, I'll just post the link and tell them to cut and paste their responses.
You gotta be kidding..people have used that 'it was a social experiment!' often enough for it to be a cliche?
You'd be amazed at how often it came up during SciFi RaceFail and the Warnings Wank, along with its sister excuse "Learning Experience". And that's just the big ones. It comes up all the time in particularly stupid FanficRants wanks.

I've seen it being used pretty often actually. And yes, it surprised me the first time I saw it.
That is just brilliant. *bookmarks*
Not saying there isn't a lot of truth to the use of stuff like that, but the overarching message that often seems to come across to me from sites like that is that it's impossible to disagree with someone in actual good faith in these situations.
Generally very reasonable, although I disagree that cultural appropriation should be stifled and the Bering Strait thing makes me headdesk.
Nice list (well I haven gone through all the sites yet)
