Mod Post: Volunteer Recruitment
Greetings good citizens of scans_daily!

We need your help! The moderating team is interested in recruiting some volunteers to fill the following positions, and we want you!

Volunteer openings:

  • TAG WRANGLERS:

We have a handful of tag wranglers already, but it never hurts to have more. Although everyone can edit tags, tag wranglers make a point of paying attention to tags on posts: adding tags if/when there are none, editing tags for errors, as well as taking the occasional gander at the tag page, keeping it tidy and correcting any erroneous tags they find there.

You may already be an expert on tagging, but if you're not or you need a refresher, remember to check out the Tagging Tutorial that [info]foxhack kindly created.

Tag wranglers should be fairly regular in their visits to scans_daily, make a habit of looking at the tag page and the tags of posts they read, and add/edit tags when necessary.

Join the TAG WRANGLING TEAM for a WRANGLIN' good time!

  • MENTORS:

At the time this post is being written, [info]scans_daily has 1127 members and is still growing! A lot of members migrated here to InsaneJournal from the old community on LiveJournal, but we still have many members who are new to both InsaneJournal and the community and culture that is Scans Daily!

Mentors will help new members (and maybe even old members who eventually find their way back to us) adjust to the community, offering tricks and tips on scanning and making posts, helping them navigate posts, tags and rules, and guiding them to further scans_daily resources.

We are preferably looking for people who have been members of scans_daily for a long time, are very familiar with the community, its history, culture, ethos, rules and policies, and enjoy helping out their fellow comic enthusiasts.

You'll be a real hero to newcomers wanting to dive into the fun that is scans_daily. BECOME A MENTOR! You'll be the Batman to their Robin! (But Not That Kind of Batman!)

  • ARCHIVIST(S):

We're looking for someone (or someones) who are able to research and hopefully implement the following things:
    - Archive posts at scans_daily on a regular basis (preferably with comments intact)
    - Research methods for downloading, viewing or re-posting archives (preferably compatible with both Mac and PC systems), and any other possibilities pertaining to archiving

Please note: while we feel confident that our posting rules and policies are far less likely to infringe on copyright as they were at the old LiveJournal community, it makes sense to back up the community as a precaution.

Do you have the skills? Unleash your inner librarian, embrace your inner Oracle, and work to organize and preserve history! Become a scans_daily archivist!

Some of you now might be thinking to yourselves: "Golly! I think I've got what it takes! But how do I apply for the volunteer position(s) of my choice?"

Happily, it's easy! All you have to do is send us an e-mail at dailyscans[at]gmail[dot]com!

Be sure to include the following in your e-mail:
- The position(s) for which you are applying
- Tell us about any relevant experience or skills you possess
- Your username (this is especially important so that we can recognize you over here)

We are proud of scans_daily and are happy to see it continue on and grow, and we appreciate your effort and enthusiasm! Volunteer for scans_daily and we will love you forever.

Thanks,
The scans_daily moderating team

The state of the LJ backup software scene is pretty depressing. I think "research" might entail "software engineering" at this point, between the orphaned, but open source, Windows-only LJarchive, Dreamwidth's live importer, and LJbook all copying down comments but all working in slightly different ways.

Talking to the Dreamwidth folks might be a good idea, actually. If we can extend their importer to accept uploaded backup files, and spin off their code into a program people can run on their own computers to generate those backup files, that'd probably be the ideal. *totally lacks the skills to make that happen though*

I think part of the problem that comes with importing comments between sites is that people don't always own the same usernames over on one site.

For example, I have a friend in Livejournal who has the same username here, but she lost the name at Dreamwidth because someone got the name before her.

That's what makes Dreamwidth's importer so genius. It marks the comments as being from the LiveJournal username, as an OpenID. So any username inconsistencies don't matter.

Dreamwidth's importer is certainly ingenious. Unfortunately there's two reasons why their importer can't handle communities - one, there's copyright issues involved (a maintainer of a community is not the copyright holder of the entries posted), and two, comments that are imported are done as OpenID-owned comments, so the original owner of the comment can still manipulate it, but OpenID accounts can't post entries to communities, so that won't work.

There's space on the team for interested, but, er, unskilled people. (I myself have absolutely no skills in this area). So if you're interested in helping with coordination and research, ping us at dailyscans.

I use jbackup.pl to backup my LJ. It grabs posts and comments alike. I'm not sure it'll work with communities, but I'll test it out when I get home tonight if anyone wants.

Apropos of nothing, the hardest part of archiving SD is backup up the images. I wrote a program that went through the LJarchive backups to snag whatever scans were left online shortly after after SD 1.0 died, and the pics from that were several gigabytes, more than I could easily share without burning and mailing DVD's to people.

I missed the boat on tag wrangling the first time, should totally rectify that now!

While I cannot commit myself to offering to help, I do want to thank the mods for the work they do on this place (and the last). I lurked for a long long time before making my first post on the old version and really enjoy this place and the way it runs.

Hmm. I'll put some thought into the matter. I'm sure I'd love to help as a tag wrangler or mentor but at the same time I'm not sure how well I'd do.

Can I ask what your concerns about the positions may be?

:/ I've always tried to be helpful whenever possible, but I'm far too curmudgeonly. You need a Busybody position!
