Amazing Spider-Man #605

This is from Amazing Spider-Man #605, by Fred Van Lente and Javier Pulido. The cover is by Mike Mayhew.

The story takes place six weeks ago (ie, before MJ returned in #600). We see a flashback to MJ having an argument with Peter.

Meanwhile, MJ's celebrity boyfriend Bobby Carr is taking MGH so he can get the role of Captain America in a new movie.  The DEA is after him because they want his dealer, who turns out to be the White Rabbit.

MJ knocks out one of the White Rabbit's minions and takes her outfit.

MJ manages to subdue the Rabbit with a cream machine from the set, and the police arrive. Afterwards she gets into an argument with Bobby about his MGH usage and dumps him, and takes up an offer she received earlier to host the "Sewn Up" reality show in New York.

Especially since Batwoman is doing the same right now. There are plenty of strange and complex British literature to use, like Narnia or Peter Pan.

This issue rules because MJ pretty much shut Peter the fuck up. As much as I love the guy, he's almost as bad as Batman in the way he allows the past to totally control himself.

Don't care what anyone says, I still really enjoy this comic.

Yeah, more often than not. I enjoy the comics. They're certainly still entertaining. And removing the marraige at least gives more room for more characters, and more variety in the story lines. Variety being the spice of life and all that.

Of course they could still probably do with introducing more interesting/likeable characters, but I suppose it takes a while to warm to some. Even back in the 70es a lot of folks didn't like MJ, thinking she was a bit of a floozie..It really took another decade or so of writing before she could become enshrinded as his 'true love'

Which to be fair, sometimes happens in real life too. Despite what Hollywood might tell you, Not everyone falls in love overnight.

And yay, to the older posters who remembered that Pete can be a bit of a jerk. I honestly don't know if I met someone in real life like him, if I would even like them. Sppiderman yes, but Peter Parker? Without knowing the secret reasons for his behaviour I probably would think he was really stuck up on himself..

i'm not sure I'm liking the way they are depicting MJ here, yes she had issuse with Peter being Spider-man, but i don;t think I ever seen her attacking uncle ben or anything like that... it makes her seem selfish. Unless there were a few more pages left out that further explain this...

It's in the heat of the moment to be fair. Plus she didn't insult him. She's just sick and tired of Peter running himself ragged and making himself miserable over a death he can't change.

To be fair, I believe that was Van Lente's intention. The way she's written, Mary Jane's hang-up is that she feels under-appreciated and wants more out of her life, whether it comes to her career or her relationships, especially the one she had with Peter. From her perspective, he placed more value on being Spider-Man than he did her. However, the incident involving Carr and the White Rabbit and what Carr says to her afterwards makes her realize that SHE was the one who was truly selfish in the relationship, not Peter, and rather than moving on with her life and not wanting to fall into the role of being "just the girl," she realized she running away and becoming someone she really didn't want to be. The scene after this one shows Carr trying to come up with a cover story with MJ to cover his own ass and in the conversation (along with Carr telling her giving her a variation of "Honey, you know I love you, so don't take this the wrong way but you're getting too old to be successful"--yeah, your guess is as good as mine what she saw in this douche) there's a point where he says his therapist talked about how "there's always tension in a relationship when one partner is so much more successful than the other" and the narration is over a picture of MJ's flashback to Spider-Man, with the next page followed by a close-up of MJ's face that suggest a kind of revelation.

Even so, you can tell that in order to make Peter and MJ's break-up plausible, Marvel had to seriously regress her character, as JMS pretty much tackled and resolved MJ's hang-ups over feeling second best when it came to Peter's life as Spider-Man in ASM #50 volume 2.

I like the art and I like proactive MJ knocking down some supervillains, but I'm not sure I like how the fight portrays her--"she just doesn't understand his manpain," etc. Though she says "This is like being a cop's wife, but worse." I suppose this is a memory from the actual, non-Mephisto'd timeline?

The fight with MJ really isn't that bad. Heck, I'd be surprised if they DIDN'T have fights like this occasionally. It's like she says, she has NO ONE that she can talk to or get help from since now Peter is all like, "my identity must be super super secret", so if he disappears for awhile, what can she do? Nothing but sit and worry about him. And even though the thing about Uncle Ben is kind of harsh, I have to agree with it. Peter needs to at least ATTEMPT to get over his whole, "If only I'd stopped that guy..." thing. It is not healthy at all to be stuck on "if only's" and "I should haves", basically because they will ruin your life, and with the way Peter is being written now, that's basically all his life is. He's got the Uncle Ben thing and the whole reason for Brand New Day was because he wouldn't be able to live with himself if Aunt May died with him thinking it was all his fault. Heck, even that recent Fantastic Four issue had Peter saying that he wished Gwen had never met him. I found that very sad. It's like Peter can't focus on any of the good in his life and just pays attention to the dead people around him.

Okay, that was long. Curse you Spider-Man, why do you always make me rant?! *shakes fist*

So are they trying to say that the reason their marriage failed in this "mephisto timeline" is that she's no longer the strong character/support he had needed and instead couldn't take the stress herself?

I know she had issues/worries with the risk of him being a superhero in the past...but this seems a little too out of character for her in my opinion

I think we finally see what broke up MJ and Peter.

I actually remember this conversation... kind of... from a Comicbook back pre wedding days.

When he had vanished four days, came back battered and MJ let into him about not knowing where he was or what he was up to. God I wish I could remember which issue it was. Because, as much as I hate NUSpidey, if they actually tied it into a preexisting Storyline, it could ALMOST make up for the hell that has come from this QUESADA Shit.

The way I see it, MJ blowing her top is strictly Mephisto-influenced. Normally, she is the soul of understanding when it comes to this sort of stuff - she's long since come to terms with the fact that this is who her husband is and what he does, and she can no more change that than fly to the moon. I mean, the argument itself is perfectly understandable, just not the fact that it's coming from MJ. She knows that Peter loves her and would never want to hurt her, and that if he hasn't contacted her, it's because he can't. As at least one novelization has shown, MJ puts so much effort into being calm and understanding for the sake of her husband that when she DOES flip out, A: it's usually at someone else, and B: it's truly impressive.
My guess is that Mephisto sparked a flash of anger in her brain at exactly the wrong time, ultimately causing their breakup. Otherwise, MJ is REALLY out of character here, is all I can say.

So I guess that whole issue with Mary Jane and the Lady and the Tiger metaphor and Mary Jane saying that yes, she'll stand by her husband no matter what because she loves him that much and knows what he does is important and that OTHER issue where Mary Jane has the chance to back out when that guy she used to know shows up and offers her a way out if she turns in Peter but then Spider-Man comes in, sweeps her out and they have a wonderful loving moment on top of the Empire State Building or that moment where the Silver Surfer lets Mary Jane see the universe or that OTHER issue where MJ and Pete are living with the Avengers and quite happy -

There was an entire arc of storylines leading up to the OMD nonsense about how much MJ loved Peter. So it's nice to know that there will never be a canon couple in Marvel, no matter how much they love each other, no matter how thoroughly it's proven, that won't be broken up in some ridiculous OOC way if it's 'necessary'

Yeah, just waiting for that last Bill and Kelda hurrah, and I'll never have to buy another Marvel Comic again.
