Some October and November solicits
The variant covers for Dark Reign X-Men vs. Agents of Atlas have been posted.

The art is by Humberto Ramos.

Who are the girl on bottom right of the first image and the guy on the bottom left of the second one? Courtesy of [info]kusonaga, I now know they are Pixie and Rockslide. :)

Here's the zombie variant by Gerald Parel

All from this page at Newsarama.

The cover for Nomad: Girl Without A World #2 is also available now (the link goes to the Marvel Catalogue page, where you have to click on the preview image to see it in a larger size).

It looks like Rikki decides to take the Nomad costume, although I can't tell if she keeps her goggles or if she's wearing a mask.

Aw, man. I loved Rikki's original costume!

Motto. I hope it comes back, that outfit was all kinds of awesome.

So did I! It was recognizable as "Bucky" but it was unique to her too, I thought.

We've yet to see what she really looks like in the Nomad outfit, though. I'm pretty sure she'll rock it. :)

Pretty good from that one glimpse, although I don't know what's up with that center seam on the pants--it tends to imply "cameltoe" even when there really isn't one.

Those are goggles, allright.

And I'll miss her original costume.

Thanks. I did think it was the goggles at first, but then I remembered reading somewhere that if she changed costumes she might choose to wear a mask...and at that angle it was a bit hard to tell.

I never understood the appeal of the zombie varients. Some of the initial ones were clever in twisted ways, but is it really enough to buy them?

Maybe they're worth something to those who are collecting them...? but I more or less agree with you. I can't really see the appeal in them either (and especially the AoA one...I mean, whatever has Venus got dripping out of her mouth? I suppose it's meant to be blood, but it just grosses me out).

The zombie variants are getting pretty old, IMO. I preferred seeing the variants with the Marvel hero in question in an advanced state of decomposition, myself--just having the hero shuffling forward without looking worse for the wear doesn't do much for me. That, and the Marvel Zombies aren't of the "shuffling forward with glazed eyes" variety either.

Might you know when and why (or how) they started? Was it just a collector's item sort of thing?

Originally this was the style used for the covers of the Marvel Zombies-related properties; after it became a hit, they started using the concept as themed variants on other comics.

http://marvel.com/news/comicstories.1467.October_2007_Is_Zombie_Month_At_Marvel~excl~

In October of 2007, Marvel declared it "Zombie Month" and decided to throw in some variants of the non-zombie titles of the characters as zombies. And yeah, it's pretty much all about being "collector's items". Marvel Zombies were all the rage back then, so you can expect that they milked every drop dry from their cash cow. I think they made five variant covers for the hardcover. I can understand getting the same issue a couple of times from a collector's standpoint, but a 20$ hardcover? Seriously?

I just really don't see the appeal of it anymore, and this is coming from a fan of zombies.

I thought you were just of a fan of Howard Sherman.

To answer your question: Pixie on the first cover, Rockslide on the second.

These covers are giving me flashbacks to the 90's -- Lobdell, Madureira, and fifteen different mini-series a week, oh my!

I kinda like it.

Pixie featured on the 1st cover is good.
Rockslide on the second cover is just awesome.
I hope it's an indication of which characters will be in this comics (I feared it would just be the classic X-Men)

Why does Humberto Ramos keep getting work? Yuck yuck yuck.

And that "Zombie" variant isn't very zombie, really. Clothing damage doesn't say "undead" to me.

I guess it depends on how fresh the zombie is. In George Romero's Night of the Living Dead, they looked like regular people. But yeah, I agree--part of the appeal of the zombie variant covers is seeing the artists go all the way with the gory details. Not much imagination here.

I find Ramos oddly appealing. Yes, it's ugly, but in a not-bad way.

He's no Scott Young or anything, but I don't really mind his stylized art-style.

He wasn't so stylistic on Impulse. His art was pretty good . . . for a light-hearted series starring a prepubescent/growing teen. His style is ATROCIOUS for adults, and he's just gotten more and more excessive with his artistic flourishes.

Oh man. Cyclops, Iceman, Colossus and Rockslide. The guy with the guns is screwed. 3/4 of his opponets are immune to bullets.

Iceman's reformed from being shattered before. Bullets probably aren't that big a deal for him if he's not all fleshy and squishy.

Iceman. He is organic ice when in iceform, and even when shattered or completely vaporised he can just reform himself. Really, Bobby is immune to conventional methods of attack alltogether.
