Fred Van Lente update on the Chameleon controversy

I got another e-mail from Fred Van Lente, that he's asked me to post.

First off, while I believe he had the best of intentions, the poster "DrSevarius" wrote me under his real name and asked me a question I thought I was answering in private, to him. He posted my response without my permission and without telling me beforehand it was supposed to be for public consumption.

If he had told me that, I would have, first off, made it clear that I am not a Marvel employee. I am not a Marvel spokesperson. I am a freelancer. I speak only for myself. That is just as true for the following statement as the previous one.

Also, if he had told me that, I may have been less coy about the following "Spoiler Alert". Anyone who cares not to have stuff that's in ASM #605 revealed now should avert their eyes.

Amazing Spider-Man #605, which went to the printer weeks ago, makes it clear that Michelle and Chameleon did nothing more than make out in the kitchen scene in #603.

There was no sex, and therefore no rape.

And I'll simply point out that in the scene in ASM #604 when Peter comes home he has no idea why, exactly, Michelle is treating him differently, only that she is. He learns why-- at least partly -- and he responds, in #605.

Thanks for listening. I appreciate it.

Best,
Fred Van Lente

Think I found it:

"These people are not the enemy. They’re the good guys, and the alternative is SO much worse. You think what S-D is bad?

Watch and see what pops up in its place."

That'd be it, yes.

And she's absolutely right.

This place is a goddamn cocktail party compared to what the old s_d was.

Shut us down after we've made all THESE concessions, and a good number of us are going to go, "You know what, fuck it; you're obviously going to come down on us no matter what we do, so we're now going to go nuclear on you."

Still, the newswire isn't good.

Or just go Luddite, and use private email lists instead of posting on the internet.

Ah, youth! (And, yeah, I do know of boards that ended up reverting to that system of communication because harassers and hackers just couldn't stop being assholes.)

Actually, I saw a design for a sort of web page that was served off people's computers. A P2P variant of S_D, if you would. Pretty close to unstoppable, I _think_, but possibly individually sueable.

Not a good number. I'm sure only the more vocal ones will say that.

If they shut us down again... I'll just swear off comics for good.

Motto. I have only so much money and free time to spend on geeky hobbies, so if one of my hobbies starts aggravating me, I'll just drop it and focus on the others.

I'm sure there are a lot of lovely manga, videogames, artbooks and doujinshi I could buy with the money I spend on comics.

It's the equivalent of throwing a glass of water to stop a forest fire on Marvel's part, really. It's incredibly easy for *anyone* to download free comics via a simple Google search. Scans_daily is mainly for discussion of comics and to discover new ones--if all someone wants to do is read the latest Amazing Spider-Man issue on their computer, they don't need us to do it.

That is, of course, presuming that it really is the COMICS CONTENT of the comm that they have a problem with, rather than the CRITICISMS of the same that occur on here.

I'll say it right now - I think Marvel would gladly shut down any site devoted to comics discussion that they can't control, but since they know that's impossible, they'll simply use the scans that we post on here as an EXCUSE to try and shut us down.

I mean, aside from He Who Must Not Be Named, do you seriously think that anyone at Marvel would try to shut us down if this comm was all OMG I LOVE MARVEL AND HAVE TO BUY FIVE COPIES OF EVERY ISSUE THEY PRODUCE?

Here's the rules on Marvel's message boards regarding the discussion of One More Day and related topics. I am not making this up.

REMINDER
Do not bash people (yes, this includes Joe Quesada, Steve Wacker, and anyone else), companies (yes, this includes Marvel), or characters (yes, this includes Mephisto, Mary Jane, Peter Parker, and every other character). By all means feel free to critique the work--but not the person.

Bashing is somewhat subjective, but, essentially it means being excessively negative about a subject without giving reasons why. This does not mean that you aren’t allowed to have your own opinions, only that you must be cognizant about how you phrase them. If you dislike something, you absolutely can say so, but say it in a way that doesn’t mindlessly lash out at the subject of your ire. Basically: “Spider-Man sucks and everyone who likes him sucks,” is bashing, while “I haven’t enjoyed Spider-Man since he got married because the marriage makes me less interested in the character,” is not bashing.

Keep all discussions civil. "Flame War" participants, regardless of "who started it", will be dealt with severely."

You can't insult Mephisto! Un-freaking-believable.

Also:

THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND
-The marriage itself was an editorial mandate.
-It is called "One More Day." Nothing else. Anything else is considered bashing.
-What is stated in interviews, letter pages, or conventions do not count. Only what is shown in the comics is what counts.
-You don't know what happened completely. The story is not finished.

Yep.

I love that their example of "criticism" that's NOT considered "bashing" is SUPPORTIVE of the new status quo.

As odd as those rules are, (and I can only imagine they meant 'don't bash Mephisto as a character' as not being able to say anything bad about the freaking devil is way too bizzare), I chuckled at the fact that they specifically added Queseda in as a 'no, you can't even bash him' and read a 'though he might deserve it' in there.

Here at scans_daily, thankfully, we're free to take the controversial stance that the devil is a bad person whom we* would not have over for dinner.

*: "we" here refers to the portion of scans_daily who would not wish to have the devil over for dinner, and is not intended to encompass the entirety of the scans_daily community, which may hold many divergent opinions.

We put out there for volunteers to back up the com. Sadly, I don't think any were forthcoming. I want to be able to do so personally, but the only software which will apparently do so is PC based and I'm not.

However, if someone was in a position to, that would make everyone very happy, I suspect.
