Grant Morrison on the Scott/Emma affair.

Back in S_D 1.0, I posted the storyline of Scott and Emma's affair from Grant Morrison's New X-Men run. I remember that there was some debate over whether or not Scott was actually cheating on Jean, since the hot sweaty sex he was having with Emma was only telepathic.

Well, here to settle the debate once and for all is Grant Morrison himself.

This is one of the questions from Grant Morrison's interview in the Comics Creators on X-Men book, which I highly recommend if you're an X-Men fan.

In your mind, did Scott and Emma commit adultery?

The way I saw it was that Jean and Scott had become remote. For me, the great emotional moment for Scott and Jean was when they ran out to die together on the moon during the Phoenix Saga. After Jean died, Scott ended up with a lot of other women. Scott was very attractive to women even though he didn't know it and I wanted to play around with that. Since he was becoming emotionally remote from Jean, because she was becoming more and more godlike, it just seemed he would naturally fall into the arms of someone more emotionally connected, which Emma actually was. Yes, it was a kind of adultery, but at the same time Jean wasn't being his wife anymore. I just felt that the spark between them had died out and it was time to give Scott someone else.

Never liked Jean/Logan either. And just because Jean didn't "go all the way" with Logan (and technically neither did Scott/Emma physically) the idea that Scott should really be OK about his girlfriend/wife making eyes at a anti-social violent hairy dwarf for years and years and constantly kissing him in tense situations (when Scott is not around) is really weird. Why should Scott have been the third wheel - he's the one she married.

Now, I'm not a fan of Scott/Emma and hated how it was done but Scott not only married a literal Jean clone but dumped his wife and kid the minute Jean returned from the dead. You would think that would be enough to rid her of her Wolverine infatuation but the writers couldn't drop it (and it didn't help that the movies and Claremont's new/old X Men Forever title try to make this grand love story - which it never was).

How many times has Jean actually kissed him?

She kissed him when they were trapped inside that kid's head and thought they were going to die, in Joe Casey's run. And she kissed him in Morrison's run after Scott pushed her away. I don't recall her kissing him anywhere else.

I think you may be right (I think there was one more time besides that but the exact storyline slipped my memory).

Maybe I was thinking of all the times when they looked like they were about to kiss or were having passionate looks at each other or in the alternate timeline/dimension Jean/Wolvie pairings that sometimes showed up. It just felt that Marvel was milking the Unresolved Sexual Tension between Jean and Logan for decades and in all that time despite the fact that Scott was the only who actually GOT the girl he came out looking second best (which can be also ascribed to Wolverine's inexplicable uber-popularity).

A demonically-influenced Wolverine kissed her in Inferno, if that's what you're thinking of?

That could be. Now that you've counted them I guess it just FEELS like more times that it actually was. Though the circumstances in most of them were dumb to begin with.
