Ultimatum X-Men Requiem...
Ultimatum was horrible, the deaths were needless, bla bla bla. That said, this two page spread from Ultimatum X-Men Requiem is both gorgeous and infuriating.





Ok, I recognize Cyclops, Nightcrawler, Beast, Xavier, Angel, Juggernaut and Dazzler. Not entirely sure about the rest though.

Seriously, the image of all those bodies, peacefully laid out before burial really tugs at the heart. Shame they're all dead long before they should be.

Also, it cracks me up that Scott doesn't get a suit, but is buried in his X-Men uniform.

Maybe it's just my dislike of the X-Men, especially the Ultimate version, but I couldn't help but sigh, "If only..."

Oh yes. As bad as Ultimatum was, this almost makes it seem worthwhile.
Too bad the X-Men are like a Hydra: Kill one and two will come forth in it's place. The third one gets resurrected for free.

I was thinking that might be her, but there's really no telling with Ultimate X-Men related stuff. As much as I like this image, the book was pretty much a mess before it ended.

Really? It didn't strike you as a bunch of people buried with no family present (when they have been shown to be in the past when they were believed dead before), and they're closest friends burying them in shallow graves with no tears or real emotions shown over it whatsoever?

This is why Heroes blows these days...

I'm guessing the blonde to the right of Xavier is Emma. Hair isn't quite right, but the rest matches well enough. Girl between War and Juggie would be Psylocke....

Not that I'm not intensely glad to see a panel of death that isn't massively disgusting, for once, but did it have to be the scene that...well... sort of calls for it? I mean, unless the X-Men have access to embalming chemicals, plastic surgeons, and such, a few of these people should be starting to look pretty gross. Is this explained in the comic?

If that's Polaris and Sunspot in the top row then the rest of their row are probably Cannonball, Cypher and whoever else was in the Academy of Tomorrow.

In the bottom row, between Angel and Juggernaut. That looks like Psylocke. When did she die?

Y'know, after Ultimatum was universally panned (and still sold plenty of copies; I am ashamed to read superhero comics), I decided to read it. Because, like, it couldn't be as bad as people were saying. It just couldn't.

Let's play a game: Tick off each character that died in an illogical way (Nightcrawler drowning in a wave while the wing man can just fly out of the water?) green, each one with a really gruesome death (Xavier anyone?) yellow, and each off-panel death red. Combinations thereof are possible.

...What? I sure can only live with this disaster in a playful way...

...didn't Kirkman bring Ult-Beast back from the dead five minutes before this all happened? Yeesh.

Also, I haven't seen Ult-Colossus drifting about anywhere. Was he forgotten, or just off in another book?

And then right after this, the team's attacked by what looks like something stitched together from the corpses of a bunch of people who died in this thing.

It turned out to just be a robot (and it was decapitated in short order), but still, what the hell.
