A Kinder Fanboy- M'rissy
In the final months of the threeboot book the Legion was joined by the young M'rissy. At the time I thought it was obviously how Shooter saw himself in his early years writing the Legion but went on to discover the name M'rissy is actually referring to a fan of the Legion who had since died, Rich Morrissey. (His writings about Coluan Lifespans, from the Legion Fanzine 'legion outpost' is available in 'the best of the Legion outpost' on amazon)

M'rissy is their business manager, its like a good version of the lunatics taking over the asylum. The fanboy is in control and its a GOOD thing. Lightning Lad soon relies on him to help him lead...

It's nice when a little tribute can be offered like that. Not just a namecheck (that's called a Tuckerisation), but a genuine homage to a fan.

Like Geordi in Next Generation, who Gene Rodenberry named for George la Forge, a Trek fan in the 1970's who died from muscular dystrophy.

Or Project Pegasus having Director Gruenwald, after Mark Gruenwald, Marvel's Kurt Busiek before Kurt Busiek (And I mean that with absolute respect to both)

Or, and this one is killing me because I can't remmeber the guys name, during Busiek's Avengers run we meet the head of a Superhuman information gathering centre, who is named for an online fan who was famed for his copious and encyclopaedic lists of superhero information, who had died sometime before.

I don't think my link worked in the post but reading about the guy, he was utterly deserving http://www.povonline.com/cols/COL346.htm

It might actually be the same guy who featured in the Avengers now I read that bio of him and see his picture.

Does sound like a terrific fellow.

It's a pity (and probably a disservice to his memory) that his representation here comes across as a total Sue.

Given the general ineptness of the Threeboot Legion, who spent so much time pointing out how awful adults were but, with one of two exceptions, failed to demonstrate how they would do anything better (or at least less wrong in a different way) that I can tolerate an actually bright, competent 13 year old who can work within the system and actually achieve a useful end result. It gives me a lot more hope for the future than this version of Garth ever did.

The fan referenced in the Busiek/Perez Avengers was one Jason Rivera. I believe he was even drawn to look like the guy.

Plus he's the one person capable of creating Kryptonite that can harm Superboy-Prime. And now Prime's back in OUR world.

You've doomed us all, Volksjager.

Not necessarily. Element Lad was the last survivor of Trom, and the population was wiped out in the 31st Century.

Prime is stuck in the present, so depending if Trom was an Earth colony or not, there may be a planet populated with Trommite-Primes just waiting out there...

Morrissey was also honored in the Metamorpho strip of Wednesday Comics #2, as the name of the person writing in the fan letter.

I've always thought Rich would have enjoyed scans_daily for the mingling of veteran old school fans with newbies wanting to learn more about comics history, because Rich was all about that. But he never thought of himself as a celebrity of comics fandom, so the idea we'd ever be talking about him here would just baffle him.

And yeah, everything Mark Evanier says about him in the link cited above is spot on...though the included photo bugs me, because his health was already in decline when it was taken and it doesn't really look like Rich.

I talked to Rich Morrissey a few times on the DC message boards shortly before he died. He was rather rude to me and hurt my feelings. Something to do with Blackhawk that I can't even remember now. He always came over a bit of a twat to me in our interactions. Sorry, but that's how I felt. When the subject of him comes up everyone praises him as some kind of fandom god but I always remember that dcmb thread where I said something about the Blackhawks he disagreed with and he was bitchy to me.

At the time I never knew he was famous or a longtime big name fan. As far as I was concerned he was just another rude idiot on a message board.

I suppose I'll be flamed for this, but that time he hurt me like that is what I always remember. All this about what a great guy he was wasn't borne out in my experience. In our dcmb interactions he always came over rather smug and snotty imho.

Well, he helped found H.E.A.T. so I'm pretty sure he could sling it around..:) Funny, now that I think about it, I may've come across him on the Green Lantern boards. Hm.
