Even more Wednesday Comics!
You'll have to forgive me, everyone else already got the really special ones this week, and too many of the others we might want to post from later, so I'm showing you Hawkman.

But I can at least say good things about Kyle Baker. There's something about this strip that borders almost on the absurd the makes it noteworthy, but it's hard to put into words.
So, instead, we flap.

I heartily recommend the title to anyone who isn't picking it up. This is a really magical kind of thing, and I promise you won't regret being a part of it! I've been showing it to everyone I know who's even vaguely interested in comics, getting them as excited as I am. My LCS' are selling out, so don't miss out at yours!

This was one of my favorite strips. There weren't any I really disliked, but this one sticks out. Also, I like that Hawkman makes the birds fly so high that the weaker ones are falling back to Earth almost as much as I like his love of sandwhiches.

me too!! i absolutely loved the art and the birds' pov (are they all hawks? from the shape of the heads, some look like vultures...). just so unique

this was my fav even if i dont really read hawkman or know much about him.

catwoman's was also very good btw, so i'm very happy with wednesday comics :)

What an unmitigated bastard Hawkman is! Never mind that half of the birds are fucking endangered species, he has no business making the poor sods flap themselves to death to pursue an agenda which is completely unrelated to them or their lives.

Yet, he looks absolutely fab while doing it.

There seems to be some debate over whether the narration here is a spoof of Frank Miller's 300 or if that's reading too much into it.

That is the best speculation I've ever heard. If it's true I might love this strip a thousand times more.

Well, I, for one, was reading that eagle's narration in David Wenham's voice.

Okay, wow.

Wow!

I can't stop smiling. Wow.

Oh, Kyle Baker. Do Blackhawk someday? I beg of thee.

At the risk of sounding like a snot ... couldn't the artist have found better references for the birds? I mean, is that a bald eagle or a dodo head in the first panel? And birds do not fly with their feet sticking out like that--they look like they've been stuffed and thrown in the air. And the wings--some are decent, but some ... c'mon, drawing proper wing structure is not that hard. Wings do not bend that way!

...leaving aside the fact that Hawkman is leading birds into the upper atmosphere in a kamikaze run against a *jetliner*. What the heck? Is his strategy to have them sucked into the engines? I can't see any way this turning out well for the birds or the humans .... Should we be calling this Hawkdickery?

'we flap' is such an ugly repetition. Also, Kyle Baker signs like Walt Disney I'm disturbed

Yeah, I laughed myself silly at the "we flap" line. And Hawkman is such a horrible dick, killing those poor birds, I hope something horrible happens to him. Like they turn on him and peck out his eyes.

Those birds gave their lives so you could have the right to burn the flag and not like baseball. Show some respect.

This would be bizarre without the "We flap" line. With it, it's sublime.

I care about Hawkman. And I loved this page from Wednesday Comics - I can't wait to see Arthur's cameo in the series.

I admit, I'm waiting for trade. Is that a mistake?

Probably. It's 4 times bigger than your average trade paperback, so even if they do compress it you're not going to get the gorgeous level of detail you find in the real thing.

Plus, it's so much fun to fold it out and read it whilst sprawled on the floor like a little kid.

Yeah, I just can't see this being the same in trade. Just to keep the ratio, they'd have to make it huge and two-page spread everything, like Art Spiegelman's Shadow Of No Towers. And even then you'd lose something magnificent in the presentation. I've said before I'd drop other titles for the sake of Wednesday Comics, and I totally would if it came down to it.

Well, $16 a month maybe, but considering it's a weekly, that's four issues! It's 3.99 per issue, comes out each week for the next twelve (well, eleven now?) weeks.
