That talked with Alfred totally cracked me up. I love that he was barely keeping himself from laughing from the start, and the way that I imagine Dick saying all his lines while striking hyper dramatic poses because damn, the wrong uniform is just killing him. And I love that Alfred says that it's not that Dick's Batman gives him any more than he's used to handling, it's just a different set of luggage.

I will say that I'm still surprised at Alfred being okay with Damian awake and waiting to train with Dick at 4:30 AM. It seems like Alfred should be trying to get this kid on a more regular schedule. So he just stays up all night and sleeps during the day? Somewhere? Because he doesn't have to go to school, Alfred just occasionally talks about lessons he (Alfred) is supposed to give him?

Actually, this isn't bad. And Alfred hasn't smiled this much in a while.

... okay, that's actually pretty good. I'm still way too pissed with DC over BftC to buy any more Batman until they fix what they did to Jason (and then added insult to injury by making Tony frickin' Daniel the new Batman writer- I mean, what?), but it's nice to know that they can still have a decent issue every now and again.

The new costume thing is an interesting issue- I'd never even thought about it, but it would be a problem, wouldn't it?

Here's a funny thought, what if we all bought Winick's Batman then dropped the book like a rock when Daniel takes over to send a message to DC? Could we move in te kind of numbers to make that happen? I mean, Batman was one of the Batbooks I couldn't give a damn about, but this actually looks a lot better than I was expecting.

On the other hand, Winick wrote this issue, and he is pretty much the only writer who can write a very enjoyable Jason. So I'd buy this just to support him and say "screw you!" to Daniel.

Totally down with the writing-- but why is everything so damn shiny? (Although I love the last panel in the first scan where it looks like Dick would be threatening a criminal, but he's actually just whining about his cape)

How is Damien? Like 9? Is it even physically possible for a kid that young to have abs that defined? Or is the (rubber?) suit molded like that to make him feel better about himself?

Dick being that defined, on the other hand...mmmm....

Also the line "Alfred laughs because he [is] unaccustomed to pacifying a neurotic batman" made me lol in real life.

The Alfred scene would've been better if you know, Morrison didn't do nearly the exact same thing, but better, in last week's Batman and Robin.

While this scene is of more interest to the majority of folks here, it's a shame you weren't able to include a bit of the Harvey stuff at the end. Between the two, even a Winnick-hater like me has to admit that this is some pretty neat stuff.

I like Dick and I think he takes the Batman persona and makes it his own, so far what I've seen from him as Batman it doesn't read like Bruce and I love that (like for example how he smiles or cracks a joke under that cowl).

As for Damian he'll end up loving Dick, Batman needs Robin but I think in this case this Robin needs a Batman. But really Dick has a contagious, cheerful, and upbeat personality that makes the most serious tight-butt person smile, he also and makes a heck of a good Big brother (Whatever your opinion is on what happened in the Red Robin comics I still think he's a good big bro).

OK, a few comments:

1: I have to say, this is the first time I've come close to sorta-kinda understanding why Dick puts up with Damian. I still dislike the little buttweasel, but at least he's written as less of an arrogant little prick here.

2: Batman's cloak is made of KEVLAR?! That stuff weighs a TON! There's no way you could make it work as a cloak - it'd be like having a sheet of chainmail dangling from your shoulders.

3: Dick has been Batman before. Shouldn't he be a bit more used to it by now?

I like that the second Dick takes off the cape and cowl his whole body seems to shrink. Or rather, suddenly it's Dick's body again rather than Bruce's. Intentional or not the effect is kind of cool.

And, I kind of love that however obnoxious the little brat is, Dick can't resist using training time as an opportunity to bond with Damian a bit. And what a surprise that kicking him around is apparently the way to do it. I think that's possibly the most not unproductive conversation I've seen them have.

Dick looks so young. I think it's the hair.

And it seems earning Damian's respect implies kicking his ass. (</ simplification) Yay Batman/Robin meta! Stay with us, Judd.
