Batman and Robin #2

Pyg's jerks attack Gotham PD, trying to break Toad out.

Heh.

After the whole thing's over, Dick and Damian have words. Note that the whole issue is Dick telling the story of the incident to Alfred.

I started pulling this series because I remembered how much I like Frank Quitely's art that wasn't New X-Men, stayed for the characters. I know a lot of people are apprehensive about Damian being a Canon Sue, but this exchange kind of sets me at ease. No one's pretending that Damian isn't a little dickweed, but part of the Batfamily has always been to steer the Gotham's more misdirected heroes down the right path, and in my opinion Dick trying to take the little snot under his wing and do his best for him is an even better tribute to Bruce's legacy than wearing the cowl ever could be.

And Alfred being wise and fatherly is always a good time. Shame it's without snark, but I imagine Bruce's thickheadedness required more sarcasm to penetrate while Dick called for a softer approach.

Also, it's looking like we're getting Damian in a classic Robin role next issue, ropes and all! So what say, S_D, anyone else really like this issue?

I didn't know about those details with Talia so that's right.

Which sentiments is Alfred echoing here that make them both daft?

I did think Dick was supposed to be saying he was a snob. But I thought his choice of the more complimentary "aristocratic" was a reminder that Damian really is an aristocrat which I just don't think Dick would think of him as.

Bruce said early on that Damian needs love and respect to overcome the conditioning he endured throughout his life, and seemed to imply that was why he was taking him under his wing (somewhat) and offering him so many chances. I thought that was the line of thinking you were referring to when you said it made Alfred sound a bit daft. Sorry if that's not the case, I don't always read or comprehend things so good before my third cup of coffee. Blaargh.

I kind of figured Dick was talking more about the way that Damian perceives himself and acts, Damian struts about like an aristocrat and gives off that vibe, but that doesn't necessarily mean that Dick thinks his 'I'm better than you' air is anything but annoying.

Ah! I see what you mean. I didn't mean that pov, exactly. That makes sense to me. Damian has obviously been brought up badly and the idea that he needs love and conditioning I think is absolutely correct. That part isn't crazy at all.

I'm probably just having a personal issue with the use of the term aristocrat and I'm being oversensitive to it. In context clearly Dick's complaining about it so it's not like he's saying "Wow, Damian is so high class!" or anything.

Well, that's just mixing definition with context. In context, there's absolutely nothing complimentary about what Dick's saying, it's more about the way Damian acts than his actual status.

Yes, I know that's the way it's said in context. Like I said above, it's just that given everything else I'm suspicious of the choice of that word by the author. But that's me. It just reads to me like using Dick's insult to get something in there.

It all depends on the kind of connotations the word carries for you. Myself, I've always thought of aristocrats negatively.
