Batman and Robin #2

Pyg's jerks attack Gotham PD, trying to break Toad out.

Heh.

After the whole thing's over, Dick and Damian have words. Note that the whole issue is Dick telling the story of the incident to Alfred.

I started pulling this series because I remembered how much I like Frank Quitely's art that wasn't New X-Men, stayed for the characters. I know a lot of people are apprehensive about Damian being a Canon Sue, but this exchange kind of sets me at ease. No one's pretending that Damian isn't a little dickweed, but part of the Batfamily has always been to steer the Gotham's more misdirected heroes down the right path, and in my opinion Dick trying to take the little snot under his wing and do his best for him is an even better tribute to Bruce's legacy than wearing the cowl ever could be.

And Alfred being wise and fatherly is always a good time. Shame it's without snark, but I imagine Bruce's thickheadedness required more sarcasm to penetrate while Dick called for a softer approach.

Also, it's looking like we're getting Damian in a classic Robin role next issue, ropes and all! So what say, S_D, anyone else really like this issue?

Well, flying cars *are* pretty nice.

I just am hesitant to be okay with the idea that a ten-year-old kid could be the fresh perspective because he's the heir to the throne and genetically so cut out to be who he's set up to be idea...

I don't think the Batfamily is about genetic destiny or that DNA makes you better.

Which is why I'm still holding out hope that Damian's inevitable comeuppance comes with that lesson attached. One of the reasons he's such a jarring character in the Batfamily is because of his blood relation, where the Batfamily not only isn't about that but is almost specifically about its lack.

Yes!

Agreed. The Batfamily is most certainly not about genetic inheritance.

It's about what you make of yourself.

Which is why I hold out hope that Damian's DNA is not necessarily Bruce's.

Nobody else needed that to be in the fold. That's not what Batfamily is about.

You know what? Now I'm just looking forward to Blackest Night: Batman that much more. Tomasi understands how the Batfamily works, lets see how he handles Damian! Maybe fighting (and losing to?) zombie Bruce will be just the shock to the system the kid needs!

I'm thinking that Damian is Jason Todd's kid.

Jason would hate it if his kid was an entitled little prince, and he'd hate it even more if the kid thought he was Bruce's - he'd feel it'd be one more thing Bruce stole from him.

Truckloads of fascinating wrong. :D

And Bruce would go out of his way to make sure the kid was raised right, seeing Damian as his chance to make up for Jason in some way.

Talia DID help out Jason Todd after he came back, did she show interest in him at all?

In what we saw, she kissed him and lobbied pretty hard to let him take a dip in a Lazarus Pit (to Ra's, after she absconded with the zombie-esque body). Off-panel, she was Jason's backing to do whatever it is he needed to get back at Bruce.
