New from the House of Ideas

Newsarama has a preview for Marvel Divas #1 up.

Diva (dee-vah), noun: An unusually glamorous and powerful woman. See: Patsy "Hellcat" Walker; Felicia "Black Cat" Hardy; Angelica "Firestar" Jones; and Monica "Photon" Rambeau. What happens when you take four of the Marvel Universe's most fabulous single girls and throw them together, adding liberal amounts of suds and drama? You get the sassiest, sexiest, soapiest series to come out of the House of Ideas since Millie the Model! Romance, action, ex-boyfriends, and a last page that changes everything! Let your inner divas out with this one, fellas, you won't regret it!

I... guess the interior art isn't as bad as the cover might immediately suggest?

Um... that's all I have.

And this is why I had the wait and see attitude toward it. It actually seems like it might be a fun title. I like the idea of dealing with super heroes as people first. Though it is totally going to be Sex in the City with super powers, but it it's clever it won't be too bad in that respect.

See, that's what Aguirre-Sacasa said the title wasn't going to be, despite originally being pitched that way. And despite his grandiose claims that "believe me, it's not just going to be 'Oh my God! Here we are shopping for Manola Blahniks!'” that's exactly what I'm seeing here, with characters twisted to fit that mold whether they fit or not.

Meh. If I wanted consistent characterization I wouldn't read serialized fiction of any sort. Heck, for some of these characters (excluding Monica due to Nextwave and Hellcat [who seems vaguely consistent from what I've seen of the Hellcat series]) this has been the most interesting thing done with them in *years*.

Exactly! The whole thing doesn't read at all like Firestar, Hellcat, Photon and Black Cat, it reads... generic.
The whole 'ditching the party because the A-listers are there' sounds fake (Plus, She-hulk an A-lister? And I remember that Patsy was good friends with Sue and Ororo at least), and seeing Angela whining over her non-wedding with Vance is jarring... as it was HER the one who called everything off.
They don't read at all like the characters they're supposed to be.

I continue to be boggled with... what the hell? Monica? Being bitchy and shallow and only interested in being at the coolest party? She was so not a girly girl as an Avenger.

I found it nearly unreadable. Hell, it managed to not only make *them* totally unlikeable, it managed to crap on various other female characters. Emma Frost would probably make a showy entrance to a party if it suited her purposes, but why would Sue Storm be prancing in with her? She-Hulk? I'm sure Sue does charity events given the FF's position, but I doubt she makes diva entrances. And Ororo> What the fuck?
