New from the House of Ideas

Newsarama has a preview for Marvel Divas #1 up.

Diva (dee-vah), noun: An unusually glamorous and powerful woman. See: Patsy "Hellcat" Walker; Felicia "Black Cat" Hardy; Angelica "Firestar" Jones; and Monica "Photon" Rambeau. What happens when you take four of the Marvel Universe's most fabulous single girls and throw them together, adding liberal amounts of suds and drama? You get the sassiest, sexiest, soapiest series to come out of the House of Ideas since Millie the Model! Romance, action, ex-boyfriends, and a last page that changes everything! Let your inner divas out with this one, fellas, you won't regret it!

I... guess the interior art isn't as bad as the cover might immediately suggest?

Um... that's all I have.

AAARRRRGH! I can't decide if I'll be picking this up or not! I like the characters, I want to support books with female leads and I actually like the interior art...but the way it's being advertised is just so damn asinine it makes me want to scream and set the book on fire.

This is my problem with the book too. And the whole "Firestar gets cancer, eventho she already had it, but it worked for Sex and the City".

This feels like you're damned if you do, or damned if you don't.
1 - the book does well, Joe Q says "see, i can go on berating people, and this proves the book isnt sexist".
2 - the book doesnt sell and they say "this is because it was a book with women, women dont read comics, and books with female leads dont sell"

I can taste bile in my mouth.

Ack, i apologise for the spoiler. It was in one of the Marvel Previews that she finds a lump or something, and then another preview said they deal with something big...

And then it was talked about on here somewhere about how they had already done thing in a previous book, how her radiation/microwave powers started hurting her, and she recovered... something to that effect.

In the New Warriors, Angelica was worried her radiation powers might cause her problems with cancer and/or her fertility.

When she joined the Avengers, Hank Pym noted that her body had a natural resistance to microwave radiation, but it was developing more slowly than her power blasts were, so he designed an undersuit which would regulate her bodies ability to process radiation until it had caught up naturally. It was viewed as being a temporary step until she was fully grown.

Of course, none of that means she couldn't develop cancer through other, perfectly natural, means. Just that it wouldn't be caused by microwave exposure. Of course, that might be the point, radiotherapy probably won't work on her since she's immune.

Shades of Diamond Lil in Alpha Flight, who was diagnosed with cancer, but her own invulnerability to just about anything meant she couldn't be treated by any normal means.

Mercifully, this was looooong pre-Skrull, back in the halcyon Kurt Busiek/George Perez Avengers days.

Solution: Steal Osborne's anti-cancer gun and shoot Firestar with it.

Chalk another one up to Covers Always Lie.

Damn, this is kinda fun. I like seeing reality mixed with unreality at these levels. I find that sorta thing amusing.

Am I the only one who wants to see Tony's response to the "sexiled to Alaska" question?

Tony: Well, if it involved sex, I probably did it. Let me check my calendar.

And this is why I had the wait and see attitude toward it. It actually seems like it might be a fun title. I like the idea of dealing with super heroes as people first. Though it is totally going to be Sex in the City with super powers, but it it's clever it won't be too bad in that respect.

See, that's what Aguirre-Sacasa said the title wasn't going to be, despite originally being pitched that way. And despite his grandiose claims that "believe me, it's not just going to be 'Oh my God! Here we are shopping for Manola Blahniks!'” that's exactly what I'm seeing here, with characters twisted to fit that mold whether they fit or not.

Meh. If I wanted consistent characterization I wouldn't read serialized fiction of any sort. Heck, for some of these characters (excluding Monica due to Nextwave and Hellcat [who seems vaguely consistent from what I've seen of the Hellcat series]) this has been the most interesting thing done with them in *years*.

Exactly! The whole thing doesn't read at all like Firestar, Hellcat, Photon and Black Cat, it reads... generic.
The whole 'ditching the party because the A-listers are there' sounds fake (Plus, She-hulk an A-lister? And I remember that Patsy was good friends with Sue and Ororo at least), and seeing Angela whining over her non-wedding with Vance is jarring... as it was HER the one who called everything off.
They don't read at all like the characters they're supposed to be.

I continue to be boggled with... what the hell? Monica? Being bitchy and shallow and only interested in being at the coolest party? She was so not a girly girl as an Avenger.

I found it nearly unreadable. Hell, it managed to not only make *them* totally unlikeable, it managed to crap on various other female characters. Emma Frost would probably make a showy entrance to a party if it suited her purposes, but why would Sue Storm be prancing in with her? She-Hulk? I'm sure Sue does charity events given the FF's position, but I doubt she makes diva entrances. And Ororo> What the fuck?

Can't wait for this comics.
And thanks Mr Saccasa, for not have chosen over-exploited A-list super heroins as the main characters.

Bleh. I feel like I'm reading Cosmo, turned comic-book form. There's a reason the only monthly printed material I read are comics, not women's magazines.

Again, I have really no idea who they're trying to appeal to here. They say "Let your inner divas out with this one, fellas" in the solicitation copy, but the content seems more geared toward female readers. IDK.

I'm pretty sure they got the term "Divas" from WWE. I'm pretty sure Marvel has never heard that word until WWE started calling their girls Divas. I'm pretty sure I believe this to be the truth.

"It's about a woman navigating the slippery slope of single super hero singledom. It's about asking the hard questions. If you're not an Emma Frost, or a Carol Danvers, or an Ororo Monroe, how do you cope? How do you find a balance? Work, relationships, personal time?"

That sounds like a horrible book.

Photon and Firestar really don't seem sassy or soapy to me. Maybe Black Cat. Hellcat would be interesting because well, she's nuts. Seeing her reaction to soap situations would be fun.

Doesn't look like it to me - I'm not seeing many recognizable character traits here. You could pretty much fill in any other female characters into these roles, and it'd come out basically the same. Nary a trace so far of the adorable Hellcat ditziness that was in the mini.

There, there - it's just one mini. The whole 'Hellcat in Alaska' thing was very popular, and is probably the reason she's in this one - I'm sure she'll be back to her adorably ditzy self in no time. I mean, NO ONE is in character here.

This couldn't possibly be any more like 'Sex and the City', even if it used both hands. I mean, seriously, I've only seen a few minutes worth of 'Sex and the City', and I can recognize its trademarks here. (Plus, cultural osmosis.)
And honestly, how is this supposed to appeal to guys? I mean, that's who they say they're marketing it to. "Let your inner divas out with this one, fellas" - that sounds suspiciously like 'get in touch with your feminine side. And I AM in touch with my feminine side, thank you, about as much as its possible for a hairy, usually unshaven heterosexual male to be. Most of my really close friends are females, I've seen a few chick flicks in my time (not that any of them are exactly in my top ten, but still), and I've been known to utter 'you go, girl!' when viewing moments of feminine empowerment. (Not particularly loudly, mind you.) And STILL, this preview made me feel like I'd just walked into the girls' room by accident. And it was pink. With gratuitous hair-care products. And Barbies.

The thing is, the real market for this is damnably specific - it's aimed not just at 'chicks', but at 'sophisticated yuppie chicks who were really into 'Sex and the City'. I mean, good grief - it's hard enough to market things just to one gender or another. Stop trying to appeal to the yuppies! Yuppies don't damn well read comic books! (Well, maybe 'Persepolis', just to show how sophisticated and up-to-date they are, but that's about it.)
