Ultimate Pyro

Previously on Ultimate X-Men, Cable (who in the Ultimate universe is an older version of Wolverine) came from the future to kill Xavier. Bishop came from the future to stop him and help the X-Men. In the end Cable apparently blew up  Xavier and left Bishop stranded in the present. Cyclops disbanded the X-Men, and Bishop decided to form his own team.

This is from Ultimate X-Men #80, by Robert Kirkman and Yanick Paquette.

At the end of #80, it's revealed that Xavier is still alive, and is in the future with Cable.

In Ultimate X-Men #82, by Kirkman and Pascal Alixe...

In #83, Bishop recruits Dazzler and Angel.

Then, in Ultimate X-Men #84, by Kirkman and Paquette...

Bishop recruits Wolverine.

And, after recruiting Psylocke...

In #85...

After Bishop helped her use her powers more offensively, Dazzler is able to take down three of the sentinels at once.

This is Stryfe. He's the leader of the Mutant Liberation Front, and doesn't have any connection to his 616-counterpart.

In #86...

In #87...

The covers for #85-88 form one big image.

It's later revealed that Bishop is really working with Cable.

In Ultimate X-Men #90 Sinister heads to the Morlocks' tunnels so he can kill six more mutants (having already killed four in BKV's run) and bring back Apocalypse. The art is by Salvador Larroca.

Sinister is transformed into Apocalypse.

In Ultimate X-Men #92, Cable and Professor X return to the present.

Later...

In Ultimate X-Men #93, Kirkman's last issue, Phoenix defeats Apocalypse. The art is by Harvey Tolibao.

When Aron Coleite's run on Ultimate X-Men started next issue, Pyro was nowhere to be seen.

Then, in Jeph Loeb's Ultimates 3 #4 and #5...

Yes. Yes it is.

It's posts like these that make me re-evaluate my own understanding and takes on various cahracters. And I love it!

I should share some of them some day...

Ye gods, does Ultimate X-Men have the most inconsistent art in the world or what?

Who was doing the art for Loeb's Ultimates run there? It's pretty gorgeous (and not just Valkyrie).

Man, I loved Pyro at first..turning him into a rapist wouldn't really be in character for 616 Pyro, who's at least a villain...for Ult, it's insane. He was a good guy! >_<

On a different note...when did Cable turn into John Larroquette?

The best explanation would be that it was one of Ultron's robot impostors that he sent to infiltrate the Brotherhood.

I enjoyed that first lot, though. Never really liked Ultimate X-Men before!

Wow, did Kirkman suck.

Invincible and Walking Dead are both great books, but his Ult. X-Men run was just abysmal. Way to suck everything unique out of that book, Kirkman!

Except surely things like making Pyro heroic WAS a change. It's turning the nice guy into a depraved rapist which is the suckage IMHO.

One thing I will give Kirkman credit for on his Ult. X-Men run was elaborating on Ult. Colossus and Ult. Northstar as a couple AND trying to write them out of the book by giving them something like a happy ending. Kudos to him on that.

Wow, really? That sounds pretty cool. I don't suppose you (or someone else) would be able to do a Ultimate Colossus/Northstar post?

You mean to tell me that we've been here nearly four months and no one has revisited the "I FUCKING LOVE sandwiches" page?

I am ashamed of us all. ;)

And alas, I only have the Vaughn Ult. X-Men issues. I thought Kirkman's run wasn't entirely wretched, but there wasn't enough good there for me to spend money on it.

There really isn't much context. Pete's working as a construction worker, stops to eat his lunch, and...Paquette* just made it really...horribly overdramatic.

* I think Paquette was drawing it at the time. I don't have the issue at hand, and with Pete's mouth open, it's hard to tell if he's got the frog lips that are such an obvious mark of Paquette's men, but, I'm pretty sure it was him.

K, I guess Alixe made it really overly dramatic, then.

(I'd apologise to Paquette over the mixup on the off chance he's reading, but I suspect the 'frog lips' comment would be more insulting, and I have no intention of apologising for that. >_>)

That last image of Xavier is horrifying. And it's not just because of the over the top detail, like his head veins and stuff, but also the freaking creepy grin on his face. Also: Eyebrows.

It would have been great if Wolverine had been serious when he said that Bishop didn't get to explain himself. Y'know, instead of saying *saying* that and then, um, letting Bishop explain himself. Yes, while he was dying. But still.
