Fathers & Sons: Bats & Arrows [24 scans, various sizes]
This started off as a Father & Son post for [info]pindrops but it got a little off the beaten track. Hopefully, still enjoyable! It's by no means comprehensive but just some of the ones I saved and liked. There is a rather large first scan under the cut, so dial-up be aware.

First up, it's from Batman and the Outsiders Special #1. A recording left for Alfred in the case of Bruce's death. It's a strange way to start, but I find it to be a beautiful scene for a father/son relationship.

To recover from the extreme sad here, this is from Gotham Adventures #60, in which DCAU!Bruce discovers he does need his family. One of my favourite moments.

On to Gotham Knights #17, when Bruce asks Dick if he'll agree to be his legal son. I don't know exactly what Dick is wearing in that last panel, but it looks a little like a feather boa. A part of me really misses that case and it's effect in scenes like this, because Bruce saying it changed nothing in UtH, things have changed. It's little moments like this I miss.

On to Nightwing Annual #2, with Bruce asking Dick to come and play family time with Tim and himself.

Just post Obsidian Age next, which mostly I remember for the hug, but I love this little scene as well. It's from JLA v3 #76.

From the end of the Prodigal arc, one of my favourite little moments from Robin #13.

Admittedly, this one can be taken in a fatherly context or a completely different one, but either way, it's one of those moments that I think deserves to be in here, as it's very early on in Dick's career and there's a lot of batdickery before it, so it's nice to see how Batman can express pride this early on.

Speaking of pride, I think this is a good moment for Dick from Teen Titans Spotlight #14. As children, you often carry a part of your parents with you and I think this is Dick acknowledging that as much as he carries his parents with him, he carries his 'father' with him too.

Let's leave Robin #1 behind and go onto Robin #2. This moment from Detective Comics #573, with Bruce asking Jason what on earth he's been doing.

In keeping with Bruce being a capable parent, lets go back two issues to Detective Comics #571 with Bruce reassuring a rather weepy Jason that he's not dead.

On to Robin mark three, with this from Detective Comics #826. Tim had been kidnapped by the Joker and Bruce doing that thing of positive reinforcement that he often forgets.

On to Robin #139. Tim fabricated an Uncle that never existed and is sure he's about to be fired when Bruce finds out. Instead, he's delighted with what the teenager has managed.

Speaking of Tim, lets go back to Robin: Cry of the Huntress #6 for a little bit on Tim's relationship with his biological father. Tim's father had been thinking Bruce had been taking his place (just wait a few years, Jack) and had possibly been hurting his son. Tim had been having trouble keeping Robin and Tim seperate and had blown up, accusing his father of never knowing him before he never bothered to get to know him before his mother died. Tim comes in to apoligise.

That's enough of the Bats. Lets get onto the Arrows! From Green Arrow v3 #10, there's a nice moment with Connor and his father at the end.

Then onto Green Arrow v3 #13, with Ollie attempting to talk to Connor about girls and other domestic things.

From Identity Crisis #6, Ollie and Connor have a moment inspired by Tim losing his father. Although for a moment, I thought that was a young Aquaman instead of Connor.

From Green Arrow Secret Files And Origins #1, a family dinner with Ollie's famous chili.

Let's have a look at Ollies relationship with Roy now, from Green Arrow v3 #6. Why yes, that is one hell of a hug Ollie gives him.

And a little bonding moment from Green Arrow v3 #16.

And finally from Outsiders #6, where Roy has been shot and Connor has to keep his father calm.

Why is Desidero so down on Bruce bringing a child into his home?

He's a social worker who's been reopening Jason Todd's file after Bruce was cleared of the charges for Vesper's murder. He's been researching Bruce for a few issues, and he wasn't very impressed by Bruce's reputation, the fact that as the wealthy benefactor of Gotham his coworkers told him to go easy on his case, and the general weirdness surrounding Jason's death and Bruce and his kids.

This is one of my favourite storylines, I sat and deconstructed the three issues the guy was in. I always wanted to know what was going on with Jason's legal status when he died and how much was disclosed to the public.

A Death in the Family made it clear that the publicly released story was that Jason had died in a Joker caused explosion in Ethiopia, just after being reunited with his birth mother, who also died.

It did? Jeez and I read through that yesterday. I don't know how I missed it.

Sorry, that may have come across as rather authoritative when I didn't intend it to be.

I haven't read it recently, but I'm sure there's a reference to it in a newspaper headline or a news report within ADitF.

I just looked through it again and I still appear to be missing it. There's an over narrative of what Bruce tells the authorities in Africa but aside from that, I can't see it.

Well, presumably what he tells the authorities in Africa IS the official story that was used, since that was the story he'd have to tell the US authorities when bringing the body back.

I wanted to know if there'd been an official Joker connection to it and I think there is, having read it. I know it gets refered to later on but no one ever says how, so I guess knowing how much was public was more the issue I was having.

In the context of the issue I think the investigation was based on a whole lot of questionable details regarding Bruce's relationships with each of the kids, and not just Jason. Given how weird and vague Dick and Tim's testimonies were, I sort of got the feeling that in spite of Bruce's man tears the issue was dropped because of lack of evidence rather than secure confidence in Bruce's ability to parent teenagers.

When I read Tim's relationship to Dick, it was as close to a confirmation of the obsession he had most of his life as you could get.

This story sounds totally fascinating--where was it? Is it after he's adopted Tim too? What kind of testimonies do they give?

It's in Gotham Knights 45 and 44. They're suspecting Bruce had something to do with the death of Jason so they're getting testimonials from Alfred, Tim and Dick. The entire arc is one of the most beautiful, heartbreaking ones I've ever read and I'd happily post some of it, if you like. It's all pre Tim's adoption, I believe.

I've got the scans from doing a previous post a while back, I'll get them up later tonight. If you don't have the early GK's, I highly recommend them. I think I read them up till about 50 and adored them.

Oh goodness yes, Gotham Knights was the first series I collected when I was starting to get into comics, and the first sixty issues or so were entirely responsible for making me fall in love with the Batfamily. Amazingly well written family stuff, all the way through.

And Gotham Knights 43! That one's mostly a flashback with Babs and Jason. After Garzonas, Bruce is unsure about what to do about Jason, so he calls in Babs, in the hopes that she'll be able to judge. It's a great read all around and it provides what I call the missing link between Batgirl!Babs and Oracle!Babs.

It's a 42-45 mini arc which I remember exploring on my journal a while back. There's even a photo of a badly beaten Jason in his file. The flashback is one of my favourite things pretty much ever.
