Fathers & Sons: Bats & Arrows [24 scans, various sizes]
This started off as a Father & Son post for [info]pindrops but it got a little off the beaten track. Hopefully, still enjoyable! It's by no means comprehensive but just some of the ones I saved and liked. There is a rather large first scan under the cut, so dial-up be aware.

First up, it's from Batman and the Outsiders Special #1. A recording left for Alfred in the case of Bruce's death. It's a strange way to start, but I find it to be a beautiful scene for a father/son relationship.

To recover from the extreme sad here, this is from Gotham Adventures #60, in which DCAU!Bruce discovers he does need his family. One of my favourite moments.

On to Gotham Knights #17, when Bruce asks Dick if he'll agree to be his legal son. I don't know exactly what Dick is wearing in that last panel, but it looks a little like a feather boa. A part of me really misses that case and it's effect in scenes like this, because Bruce saying it changed nothing in UtH, things have changed. It's little moments like this I miss.

On to Nightwing Annual #2, with Bruce asking Dick to come and play family time with Tim and himself.

Just post Obsidian Age next, which mostly I remember for the hug, but I love this little scene as well. It's from JLA v3 #76.

From the end of the Prodigal arc, one of my favourite little moments from Robin #13.

Admittedly, this one can be taken in a fatherly context or a completely different one, but either way, it's one of those moments that I think deserves to be in here, as it's very early on in Dick's career and there's a lot of batdickery before it, so it's nice to see how Batman can express pride this early on.

Speaking of pride, I think this is a good moment for Dick from Teen Titans Spotlight #14. As children, you often carry a part of your parents with you and I think this is Dick acknowledging that as much as he carries his parents with him, he carries his 'father' with him too.

Let's leave Robin #1 behind and go onto Robin #2. This moment from Detective Comics #573, with Bruce asking Jason what on earth he's been doing.

In keeping with Bruce being a capable parent, lets go back two issues to Detective Comics #571 with Bruce reassuring a rather weepy Jason that he's not dead.

On to Robin mark three, with this from Detective Comics #826. Tim had been kidnapped by the Joker and Bruce doing that thing of positive reinforcement that he often forgets.

On to Robin #139. Tim fabricated an Uncle that never existed and is sure he's about to be fired when Bruce finds out. Instead, he's delighted with what the teenager has managed.

Speaking of Tim, lets go back to Robin: Cry of the Huntress #6 for a little bit on Tim's relationship with his biological father. Tim's father had been thinking Bruce had been taking his place (just wait a few years, Jack) and had possibly been hurting his son. Tim had been having trouble keeping Robin and Tim seperate and had blown up, accusing his father of never knowing him before he never bothered to get to know him before his mother died. Tim comes in to apoligise.

That's enough of the Bats. Lets get onto the Arrows! From Green Arrow v3 #10, there's a nice moment with Connor and his father at the end.

Then onto Green Arrow v3 #13, with Ollie attempting to talk to Connor about girls and other domestic things.

From Identity Crisis #6, Ollie and Connor have a moment inspired by Tim losing his father. Although for a moment, I thought that was a young Aquaman instead of Connor.

From Green Arrow Secret Files And Origins #1, a family dinner with Ollie's famous chili.

Let's have a look at Ollies relationship with Roy now, from Green Arrow v3 #6. Why yes, that is one hell of a hug Ollie gives him.

And a little bonding moment from Green Arrow v3 #16.

And finally from Outsiders #6, where Roy has been shot and Connor has to keep his father calm.

Great post. I love all the relationship here but I miss Connor now.
Where the hell did he go after his coma anyway?

That first scan had me crying just a little bit. Oh Bruce, you damn fool - why couldn't you just say these things while you where still around? (I won't say 'alive' because I'm convinced he'll be back in a few years.) Poor Alfred.

I was too, god, I want to see Dick's so badly.

Well, wasn't it confirmed Bruce was coming back? I'm almost sure it was.

I'd love to see all of the boys messages. And... did Cass and Steph get them as well? Or is it a case of 'Boy's Club Only'!

It was? Hmmm... Missed that. Does make you wonder what Dick's role will be when he does though...

I also have something in my eye at that moment and I didn't bother with the whole R.I.P thing (I don't even think we'll have to wait years for a Bruce comeback either). Love Bruce and Alfred moments and those sadly rare moments where Bruce is in control, showing actual human emotion :D

I have that one panel where Bruce is saying "Between Fathers and Sons" pasted to my computer. I love it when Bruce is just clearly afraid to say it but just as clearly shows that his family is the most important person to him.

Also, I admit one of the things I loveabout the Batboys is the way they all negotiate their very real relationships with biological parents as part of their family relationships with each other.

Jason is adorable in that scan. He looks like a little bobble head to me somehow.

And I love the contrast to Ollie, always able to say the right thing but not always as good on the follow-through. Both families kind of show that the things that make people difficult are the things that make them who they are, and if you love them you love them.

I love that sequence, too. It says so much in so few words. It's Batman and Sons in microcosm. "I will do emotionally damaging things to you because I love you. I don't know any other way to show it."

Aw, thank you for putting this together.

I've got issues with the first scan and the scan where Bruce tells Tim that he's so proud he could burst (Bruce, this is not a healthy approval moment), but overall I'm drowning in fuzzies. (and issues with Nightwing Annual #2, but that's admittedly very tinted with the context.)

Bruce fumbling for words as he offers to adopt Dick, and Dick telling him he gets it, is one of my favourite moments in Batman/Batfamily interaction. And the Obsidian Age page as well ('except for the interpersonal skills and the ability to work with others. That was me', he says to Batman in JLA. <3)

Ollie wanting to hug Connor after reading about Jack's death makes me want to read Identity Crisis. Arrows ♥

Context is a terrible thing sometimes, but mostly, I was going for things that give the warm fuzzies.

Only read Identity Crisis if you enjoy having your heart stomped on. The scene where Jack Drake gets shot while he's on the OraCom with Tim, knowing he's about to die is the most wrenching scene I've read in DC. Seeing Ollie hug Connor afterward feels like rubbing salt on the wound.

It's true that the whole premise of Identity Crisis is based on a completely ridiculous retcon that fucked contiuity sideways. It's also true that it was an arc where well-loved characters inexplicably got "fridged" to the detriment of future stories. But damn if that wasn't some great story-telling and art. It would have been epic if it had been out-of-continuity.

Babs. Cass. Steff. He does the same things to them, but because it's women, we don't get the "manly tears" vibe. We get the sexist patronizing vibe.

One reason to like Grayson's writing. Hers is the one scene here that actually acknowledges Babs and Cass and Leslie as as important to Bruce as Dick and Tim and Alfred.

Oh wow, I seriously teared up over the second scan. Just when I think it isn't possible for the DCAU to get any better. And I'm so glad it wasn't just me, because I was certainly getting a pretty wrong vibe from that page from Teen Titans Year One the first time I saw it.

And on another note, what happened to Tim's hair in the scan with Jack Drake? Did he do that, like, on purpose?

It's just sad to count ROTJ would be coming.

TTYO definitely felt a little vibey to me.

Tim's hair during the 1992 era was terrible.

A lot of really nice moments here. I will have to go and finish the next part of my Jason Todd 1.0 origin, where we have a nice scene where Dick voluntarily hands over the identity of Robin to Jason, and Bruce thanks him for everything.

I'll be the first to admit, I was never a HUGE fan of Bruce Wayne. (The rest of the Bat-family I ADORE)

But, seeing all these together? Makes me realize how awesome of a father Bruce can be, and how I wish I had a father even remotely close to that.
