Fight Night: Leonardo versus the Shredder
I really wanted to post this originally when I first came to scans daily. But I never had the chance too, until now. In honor the of the 25th Anniversary. I have some TMNT scans, probably the greatest among them. I give you from TMNT vol. 1 #21, Return to New York Part III, aka Leonardo vs the Shredder. Dial Uppers be warned.

The issue was about forty-six pages pages (no ads). So I'm hopeful you'll get the entire fight. If I posted more than I did (twelve pages), then I apologize and will remove the needed ammount. For those who want to know the cause of this, well Oroku Saki otherwise known as the Shredder is kinda pissed as hell for getting blown to bits in TMNT vol. 1 #1.

He took out that rage of dying out on one of the turtles, Leonardo (which took place in the one shot special of the turtle). After beating him within an inch of his life he them tossed the dishonored turtle back to his brothers intending to finish the job. I mused with scanning the colored portion of the trade I have of that issue. But eh, I want the fight. So those for looking what the hell Shredder did to Leo go here and read the entire issue and then #10 which finished it at the official website:

After that mess and defeat, the Turtles retreated from New York for an entire year. They returned looking for payback, and struck at the Foot's headquarters. The enusing battle cost the lives of an ally of the Turtles (poor Zog *sniff*) and a ton of Foot Ninjas.

After the numerous fights that erupted and surprises along the way. It's all come down to this. Leonardo facing the man whose supposed to be dead in a million pieces. Pull up the popcorn and relish what I think is one of the greatest fights ever in a comic book:

*as for the reason why the building is imploding in the below page, Raph used a rocket launcher and it of course went into some fuel. Place go boom boom. There's a few pages with the three trying to get to Leo but instead are met with a massive flame. Even with the building going up in flames the two continue their death duel:

The three are somberly thinking their brother is dead when the door to their lair opens and it's Leo with Saki's body. He then declares the feud is over and honor has been restored. Later that night the four give Saki a honorable funeral pyre.

Plus if you're interested in more TMNT a reminder that Mirage is releasing trades of vol. 1 and then the Archie stuff starting in July:

And with that a very sweet AMV and song devoted to one of the greatest indy villains of all time:

Definitely one of my all-time favourite villains. Even the movie version was quite cool, in his own way.

But this was certainly an amazing fight. I love the explanation of how the Shredder keeps on coming back from the dead - It makes perfect sense for a comic book and could even have it's groundings in some real-life pieces of mythology and magic. The fact that Shredder also has three screw-up versions that he keeps around was brilliant, too, and the rest of the Turtles fight against those is also pretty darn awesome.

Way back in the day, I remember seeing in CBG a single-panel cartoon -- and it may have been by Eastman and/or Laird -- showing "Teenage Mutant Ninja". Between the spawning X-books at the time and Miller's first run on Daredevil, it was funny.

And then, not too long after, came TMNT.

And, even though it had ninja turtles, even though it had comedy, it was not a "funny" book.

Sometimes it seems people forget how it was intended to parody Miller's Daredevil. I never see references to The Hand vs The Foot, Stick vs. Splinter, or naming the turtles after... masters of the arts. Even the drawing style was a mimic of Miller.

The comic got maimed somewhat on the way to becoming a marketing juggernaut... but there was some pretty damn good stuff in there. Like this.

Well hell, the first issue shows you Matt Murdock pushing the blind man out of the way of the truck, and the "radioactive isotope" that blinds him bounces down into the sewers to mutate Splinter and the turtles... Pretty much this sequence paraphrases Miller's version of it.

I'm just annoyed that, for the more realistic take to work, the bad guy pretty much has to die. Because Shredder is an awesome villain and it's a shame to lose him.

True, I had that prob too and that was a big flaw with the original stuff for me. Because in the end about every big rogue of the TMNT is dead. Cept for Karai.

The Saki version did live again as a warped shark/human creature in a Tales of TMNT story though (a foot mystic used the worms again). And that thing is still alive for some odd reason.

Oh, maskless Shredder. That touches me in my guts. And the art!

Mmmh.

I saw the cartoon version of this.

From the new one, I mean. And it was awesome.

It was basically the turtles taking on the entire foot clan and kicking ass, beating everything from grunts to attack robots to three ugly Shredder clones (it's never really explained why Shredder had three ugly Shredder clones lying around, but so it goes) The final fight with the Shredder deviates a lot, naturally, but the ending is very similar, with Leo cutting off Shredder's head. ONSCREEN.

...and then we later see the Shredder get up and walk away. With his head under his arm!! It was one of the most memorable battles I have ever seen in any media.
