Way back in the day, I remember seeing in CBG a single-panel cartoon -- and it may have been by Eastman and/or Laird -- showing "Teenage Mutant Ninja". Between the spawning X-books at the time and Miller's first run on Daredevil, it was funny.
And then, not too long after, came TMNT.
And, even though it had ninja turtles, even though it had comedy, it was not a "funny" book.
Sometimes it seems people forget how it was intended to parody Miller's Daredevil. I never see references to The Hand vs The Foot, Stick vs. Splinter, or naming the turtles after... masters of the arts. Even the drawing style was a mimic of Miller.
The comic got maimed somewhat on the way to becoming a marketing juggernaut... but there was some pretty damn good stuff in there. Like this.
