She figures Cass has a crush on the boss.

Yeah no. That's really, really bad Babs. Certainly nothing Puckett ever even hinted at that I can find (and Horrocks was right out of the gate with the Black Wind thing). Honestly I have no recollection of the line you mention anywhere in the series (though admittedly, it's been a while since I read the whole thing), and actually the fact that you quote it as "Cassie" rather than "Cass" makes me think that it's not from the series or from anyone who wrote Cass-Babs with any kind of accuracy at all, since all three series authors were pretty meticulous about using "Cass," and you only see "Cassie" pop up in, like, her disastrous cameo in Gail's BIRDS and the like. Anyway, it definitely wasn't any kind of through-theme of their relationship that Babs thought Cass dug Bruce, and if Horrocks brought it up more times than just here, it's just Horrocks being dumb, because that's, again, really bad Babs.

For the record, I'm not defending that characterization of Babs. It takes the idea of "Babs wants to make things normal for Cass" much too far and basically assumes that Babs doesn't have the slightest familiarity with either the Batfamily or how complex the relationships between mentor/mentee can be.

I'm only pointing this instance out to show that this scene up here wasn't entirely out of the blue (and is in fact a lot more ambiguous). I'm not even entirely sure we're meant to think that Babs means "kiss" as in on the lips, here.

Oh yeah, and it took me a while to find it, but the quote's from Gotham Knights #35, which was written by Scott Beatty. Scott Beatty and his hit-or-miss Babs...

Hah! Yeah, Beatty, that would do it.

Like I said to [info]mysteryfan elsewhere in the thread, I do agree that Horrocks is playing an echo of the earlier, innocent kiss with Cain. I'm just skeptical it could possibly have come across so blatantly sexual without him noticing. And whether or not that's built on some prior one-off suggestion by Beatty or not, it's wrong and creepy and annoyingly bad Babs. Eeesh. So not a proponent of the Horrocks run.

I'm in interpretation-land again, but maybe it reads as wrong and creepy because she's an 18-year-old trying to act as a little girl and they're not blood related?
