Catwoman Abridged: Wild Ride (4 of 4)
Previous section,
http://asylums.insanejournal.com/scans_daily/357637.html#cutid1

And so we come to the end of our story, in the Southern city of Saint Roch. While Selina goes off with Wildcat, Hawkman and Hawkgirl to discuss the Egyptian Ninja Cult that has been following Selina for the past couple of issues.

While that is going on, Holly is exploring by herself,

We cut to later, where Selina has managed to hit it off with Hawkgirl, but she realises that she's late for the suprise that she had prepared for Holly, so has to get a lift to get there on time.

But who is this mysterious stranger that Selina, Slam and Co. have been following all this time? Why, it's...

And so the story ends with Holly being reunited with her long lost brother, Selina's made another superfriend and the gloom of the previous storyline is forgotten, hooray!

Weird that some people in my previous posts from this storyline actually seemed to prefer this version of Selina,

To the version drawn by Cameron Stewart and Darwyn Cooke though.

The zipper doesn't help the Stewart and Cooke one, and the pervious incarnation is dull, but at least this version of it is lacking the frankly inexcusable tail.

I kind of meant that people said they prefered the art of the Balent run to the Stewart/Cooke stuff.

I liked the acrobatics of the previous incarnation. It was flowing and inhuman. The leather era is more pulpy. Not that it's worse, it's just different, and I miss the old version.

This is a really excellent point. I really don't care for the Balent era visually at all, but it *was* extremely light, airy and dynamic, traits very suited to Catwoman stories and sadly missing in the goggles era (which, as SELINA'S BIG SCORE makes clear, can't be attributed entirely to the writing).

I rather liked the zipper. (And the big clunky boots.) Why no love for the zipper?

I really prefer the current outfit over the older purple design, frankly because, even with the zipper (and what's the issue there? Girl's gotta get out of the leather somehow), it seemed fairly functional and a touch more realistic, at least compared to the ugly purple thing, which just seemed like an excuse for T+A, and given it was Balent and it was during the 90's, it most likely was.

I understand that the zipper does allow for many more 'gee-whiz-CLEAVAGE' moments, and was certainly worked in that fashion on some of Adam Hughes less classy covers, but to me, it's still more acceptable than what we see in the example at the foot of the post.

I don't mind the zipper, but the toggle is ridiculous.

The toggle's that big ol' ring hanging off her zip, right? I agree on that one, it's just asking some bad guy to pull it down.

Yeah. There's probably a better word for that, but I'm drawing a blank. That one post, it was like the size of a freaking choker. What the fuck was the artist thinking?

What makes it sting even more is that Balent is somehow still working in the business. Somehow I kinda think he makes Land, of all people, look classy.

Is Balent doing anything other than Tarot these days? The thought of him on a superhero comic makes me wince, but his porn is God's gift to quarter bins. It's hilarious, and apart from thinking it's somehow empowering, Tarot's pretty honest about what it is as a title. I'd be sad if the industry didn't have room for that, and actually we'd all probably be better off if there were more of it to siphon the Sana Takedas away from the mainstream titles.

I [refer the old version because it's fun.

I'm not just talking about the stories (although that certainly helps. I associate the older one with stories where Selina went around the world being an international superthief, doing really fun things. I associate the Cooke costume with Selina trying to figure out who's been killing all of Gotham's Prostitutes, and with Selina's sister being forcefed bits of her husband as he's dismembered). I just think it's visually... more fun.

Personally, I *love* Selina's current costume - the zipper ring I could certainly do without, but the goggles are really deliciously great.

I oogle the goggles....:P

I like the current version as long as the artist doesn't make the ring on the zipper outlandishly huge. It reminds me a bit of the one that the various actresses wore in the 60's Batman show. I will always have a fondness for the purple dress--whether the Golden Age one with the cuffed boots or the late 70's revamp. I also love the navy blue one with the big collar and the red mask--minus the silly tail, that is. I have no love for the purple bodysuit with the thigh-high boots--though part of that may be because of Balent's ridiculous art.

No question, I love Darwyn Cooke art. It's retro, it's often noir, it's just awesome by me. The one thing I loved about Balent was his expressions, I thought they really gave Selina a fun yet kinda badass personality. Then my blissful ignorance of Tarot was shattered forever in scans_daily.

Gone is the Long hair and splashy costumes, woe. Have to admit, black leather and goggles are much more practical. I guess she got tired of replacing the purple cloth every time she turned around, it was torn to shreds so easily.

Actually, you'd be incorrect. I'm quite tired of seeing "but the leather is PRACTICAL!" argument, because nothing could be further from the truth. Obviously, no one making that argument has ever worn leather pants in their life, let alone a full catsuit, or else they might realize just how stiff and movement-restricting tight leather really is.

Spandex, or if you prefer some form of exotic synthetic stretch armor weave since this is a comic book world, stretches and flexes with the wearer. It allows them freedom of movement without being restrictive. That's why ballet dancers and the like wear those stretchy tights and leotard getups, because nothing else would allow them the freedom of movement they need. Olympic gymnasts wear almost the same thing, for the same reason. None of them could do even a fraction of what it is they do if they were slathered in tight leather with clunky boots. It would be thoroughly impractical.

I'd say that depends on the mission. Indiana Jones wears his leather bomber jacket when he's raiding tombs so he can better turn aside those pesky poison darts, and when he's being dragged through the desert behind a truck so he can keep those nasty abrasions to a minimum. Selina's Balent-era costume wasn't cutting it ... um, I mean ... it was getting sliced and diced before she could do her first backflip. So you're right, leather is inappropriate for all occasions -- but only if Edna's gonna get Selina tricked out in a suit that can stretch as far as she can (without injuring herself) and still retain its shape, virtually indestructible, yet breathes like Egyptian cotton... :)
